I've been hunting 10plus years here in northern Illinois. Teal season I run 12 hen mallards with a simple jerk cord and a hen mojo and do just fine. When the normal season opens its all about a jerk cord, drake and hen mojos and 2-3 dozen tanglefree or flambeu mallards. Cheap dekes work just fine. Thanks for making this for all the new waterfowlers, you're inspiring hunters not gear fanatics! Keep it up bud.

Really appreciate these vids, most helpful I've found. I started hunting deer in 2020, then took up turkeys and upland in 2021, and now that I have a fairly well-trained labrador retriever, I'm realizing she needs me to get into duck hunting too. Had our first duck hunt with a friend recently and we had a blast, but I'm a guy that wants to learn to do everything myself. I like a "lean and mean" approach to everything, so four dozen decoys is just not gonna be my thing, ever. I found 13 used floaters on the ol' FB marketplace that are in decent shape for $80 so I'm going to be getting my own spread going and try setting up a jerk rig like you did in your other video. Can't wait to get out, hopefully this coming weekend. Thanks again!

I enjoy your videos good entertainment and informer able videos,I been Duck hunting for 7 years now with the same friends we started out broke, because duck hunting isn't cheap we waded into areas that we could hunt had about 12 decoys cheap shotguns and shells,when I killed my first duck I'v been hooked ever since, a few years pass,we ended up saving enough,so we all pitched in on a boat with a go devil and bought some used decoys and some new through out the years now we have about 400+ decoys we don't use them all just found great deals through the years" 1$ a decoy" already weighted. We Did our homework through the years got better at calling setting spreads and scouting now we turn ever hunt into a successful hunt, and put meat in the freezer!

My first year goose hunting i used borrowed decoys. Then went on duck hunts with the guy I borrowed those decoys from. And then i went to Cabelas and got set up. But every year I order a few six packs of decoys to freshen up my spread. Now I have over 17 doz duck decoys,and 9 doz goose decoys,from floaters to field decoys. And mojo's ,lucky ducks,and wonder duck decoys,and it is out of control. I will be down sizing soon,because it is becoming a storage issue. And i just do not have the time too hunt as much as I use too!

Been duck hunting 7 years now. I have mostly avian x floaters, higdon goose floaters, hardcore shells, dive bomb silohettes. 6 Mojo's. Have more decoys than I could possibly put up by myself. My floater spread is pretty diverse, primarily mallards. The best hunt I've ever been on though was three dozen hot buy floater mallards and a mojo. They couldn't turn us down. I think they like the lifelike size of the cheap decoys. My hike in set up is just a dozen cheap Cabela's floaters with hollowed put keels and they work. Being where the birds feel comfortable will do more than any spread ever can. I've spent thousands on having the best looking spread, but unless I can pull right up to the perfect spot and unload it all, it's useless. I've gotta agree with you Bobby, money doesn't kill ducks.

I'm 15 and started duck hunting 1 week ago. I bought 6 mallards for $25 new. 4 Drake's, 2 hens. I bought an easy mallard call for $10 and a box of Winchester XPert. I hunt alone and on public mostly. I've got my limit everytime and am sure I'm doing alot wrong. The land. I hunt is pressured but I get in at 3 am and hunt till dark. It's fun, yesterday was my first time specifically going for geese and I went with my buddy that's big into duck/geese hunting. Put out bout 30 silohetes and 2 mojo and some mallard on the far left in shooting of the field. Had a few duck and goose calls, and I flagged. No goose came into our spread but rather landed on the other side of the corn. He walked over there trying to push em towards me and they swung back at him. He hit one and saw feather but otherwise it was the first time I didn't get my limit. Any reason as why they would land on the other side? Didn't circle at all and was a big flock. Tried calling and flagging. Turned on the Mojo's once but nothing. Couldn't call any ducks in either?

I would still have a pintail drake or two in the spread as a beginner, because the white on the body attracts ducks from distance. I will use 6 magnum canvasbacks in a puddle spread on the outside to bring the ducks in from distance. Also, if you have divers buy the hot buys and then paint them. It is a lot cheaper to buy hot buys and paint them than to buy divers out right. A lot of the cheaper diver decoys are small and a big mallard painted over does a good job.

Heading into my second season in MN and now have 2 dozen decoys. I talked to an old timer this season and he showed me a substitute for a mojo. Lucky Duck makes them and they do the same thing but instead of using batteries there is a string that you pull and it makes the wings move. Amazon and fleet farm have them.

Been hunting about 5 years now. Started off with a dozen cheap Hardcore mallards and a $20 craiglist mojo. I've slowly been spending the $ on flocked decoys (prefer Dakota's). I've had better luck hunting over the more expensive dekes, but the cheap ones work good for filling out the spread. Of course, the right location, wind and knowing when/how to call are more important than decoy quality IMO.

I am hopeful that this year will be my 3rd year actually hunting dux and geese since I didn't get to go last year with me having a new job and not having my bro around who hunted with me the year before (went into the military) and the year prior I just went with a buddy who lent me his Winchester SX3 while he used his old Mossberg, dekes and mojo. I really need to get a good group of guys 3-5 guys or gals and do this thing and work on my calling, scouting and shooting skills as well as help with a larger spread at times and more places or property to hunt. I have a dozen new mallards, dozen old mallards that I would like to repaint maybe even make them a couple different species (like ringneck, bluebill, redheads) for the Ohio River. Not sure what paints to use for such a venture and 7 honkers (3 old and faded) as well. All floaters of course. I will eventually have to find some deals on some full bodies since a half dozen Avian Xs are over 200 dollars.

My advice for new guys has ALWAYS been. Start with a dozen cheapos. (flambue or hot buys) and 1 or 2 baby mojos. Learn to work the mojos and a deke setup. Then move to another half doz with a jerk rig. Learn the art of working dekes and get though the first couple years of excitment and killing (shooting) your decoys. after you got your art down AND learned to work a call.then move to the nicer stuff. but totally agree. start with the cheapies. and maybe learn to air touch the cheap ones. Good luck to the new guys. and great vids bobby.

I'd say buy a dozen stormfront greenwings and 2 dozen flambeau mallards. And a few baby mojos. Might run you 300. And yes those are a great start. I still run them in my spread 20 years later although I have bought more expensive decoys. They double you can run a all real pocket spread. A mallards spread V, a mixed teal string J with a mallard spread V. Etc. Etc.. a up grade would be q 4 pack of pintail, two gadwalls two ruddy ducks, a goldeneye, a pair of woody's, 6 canvas backs, etc. Etc. Upgrades would be flocked mallards, or gunner foam decoys. A rule of thumb for big flocks is 18 mallards and a dozen other ducks. So in under 3 dozen decoys floaters you have a spread. Also mix and match like smaller and larger decoys dont know why but having a variety often works better.

2nd year ducks/geese from Mo. My buddy has a lease and that’s usually who I go with when a spot opens up. Whats the best way to find other public land to hunt or lease?

How many mojo's do you run? Does it matter water vs field? I have 2 teal and a baby mallard, was thinking about picking up another baby mallard. Thanks for any feedback

Heard stories about new guys showing up at the launch on opening day...all new gear, first in line, but haven't scouted and they're charging out into 30,000 acres of flooded timber but first they have ask "where". Goes over like a lead balloon.

Question - Would a dove mojo work? I already have a battery powered dove mojo and the mallard ones are a little pricey. I figure the movement is the important thing. Thanks.

i am brand new this year to water fowl and i went out and bought half dozen storm front mallards and half dozen teals so i hope i didnt make a mistake with the teals, maybe i should ave gotten another half dozen mallards instead? im targeting mallard and woodies and will only be pond hoping private familly for now and those are the primary species so i have 12 floaters 1/2 mallard 1/2 teals and i have a butt up feeder mojo, is this enough for pond hoping and i was going to go ahead and buy one more 1/2 dz should i go ahead and get the woodies or just get another set of mallards p.s. shout out from south east Kansas

I was wondering if a mojo is necessary for duck hunting this is my first year duck hunting on my own so I had to get my own decoys and what else not. I got 2 dozen decoys and 2 mojo butt up ripler. Do I need a spinning mojo

Is 3 1/2 dozen decoys enough for late season
@patternpaper4940
@patternpaper4940 6 лет назад
I used 1 1/2 dozen for late season last year so 3 1/2 will probably be enough, although it depends more on the situation.
@zigzagcrocodile2414
@zigzagcrocodile2414 5 лет назад
In late season you don’t need that many decoys we ran 28 goose decoys on the last day and many of those were shells but if you can find where the birds are you won’t need many decoys.
