Bokashi composting is one of the quickest and most accessible types of composting for urban gardeners. However, buying bokashi bran can be expensive and feel unsustainable. So in today's video, I teach you how to save money by making your own bokashi bran substitute with supplies most people keep around the house! It takes some time, but it is SO MUCH CHEAPER than buying bran, especially for high volume composters.
Here are the steps:
1. 1:2 rice to water (non-chlorinated), shake well, strain off rice, cover with a coffee filter and set in a cool dark place for ~7 days (you can actually still cook the rice as normal at this point so as not to waste it)
2. 1:10 rice-water from previous step to milk, cover with a lid but leave room for air to escape and set in a cool dark place for ~ 14 days
3. 1:6:1 serum from previous step to water to brown sugar (the molasses in brown sugar is important) and soak your newspaper in the mixture. Then seal your wet newspaper in plastic bags and set aside again for ~14 days
4. Dry your newspaper for final storage in a cool, dry place.
5. Use as you would bokashi bran - layering between your food scraps about every couple inches.
