Step 1: Add 9 ounces of water. Step 2: Add 4.5 ounces of pva glue Step 3: Mix well Step 4: Pour into new container and stir again Step 5: Add 250 grams of Calcium carbon (chalk) into seperate beak Step 6: Slowly add it into liquid while mixing Step 7: Repeat step 5 and 6 (total of 500 grams) Step 8: Add 120 mL of paint to liquid Step 9: Mix liquid (if you want thicker, add more of the chalk) Step 10: Mix till consistency you prefer (He used approximately 750 grams). Step 11: Store well Now you got Homemade Gesso. Thanks for the video!

I just buy a 5 gallon of PVA primer, then add a gallon of flat ceiling paint to it, (or a mix of 5 to one) done. Lasts me for about 30 or 40 canvases. The art market would have you believe they put magic turds into their stuff, but its just simple flat latex paint with a PVA additive.

Clive, just a question concerning the PVA Glue - In the US, we usually use Elmer's Glue-All, but I know it has a slightly positive Ph level and acidity. The concern is that it could eventually turn yellowish in the finished artwork, especially in areas of white paint. Is your PVA Glue a bookbinder's glue, or is the UK PVA glue a different formulary from the US's PVA?

Great information! I never thought to make my own gesso. Will try this when I run out! Tried doing this. Measure the H2O and PVA glue carefully. Mixed thoroughly. Was only able to mix it 400 grams of the calcium carbonate. Even at the first 250 grams, the mixture got really thick - I could stand the wisk up in it. Put in half of a 62 mL tube of paint. I tried gessoing a wood panel with it; the mixture is very translucent. Can I fix the glop I've made or do I start over? Help!

CLIVE I'M NEW HERE and was delighted to find your site. I saw your video of the 5 musts before painting with acrylic, as well as the one with the reipe for making gesso and have one question: I already have gesso, so do I just mix it with water and use like that, or does it require mixing white paint into it? I understood that to make the Gesso, one had to mix the calcium carbonate with water, PVA glue and white acrylic paint, but what do we need to do when we already have the gesso? Still need to mix it with water, glue and paint? Would appreciate an answer so that I don't mess everything up Many thanks Ginha - Portugal

+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich hi Lindsay how surprised I am been wanting to talk for a while but you know I'm shy I tried plaster of Paris but found it did not work so well not sure why I know they are similar things but I believe other things have been added to plaster of Paris that's why I use just plain calcium carbonate or chalk it's fine ground stores well and never given me any problems but give it a try let me know what your findings are Contact me via messenger if you wish would be good to colab one day all my best Clive

+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I can't really comment on shop bought products I do know they settle they do evaporate but I'm unsure if that will thicken then it's possible but may lead to contamination from air Bourne particular or my cat lol I make mine because I control the thickness of it being latex based a skin can form if I leave mine open for long periods Clive

M Rayner I believe here in USA we have to use talc, (like in baby powder) was thinking possibly buying white chalk and pulverize into powder... The measurements should be the same with white talc. (Makes me wonder if that ingredient is used in explosive devices here)
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 7 лет назад
Talk is just very fine chalk it's not used in explosives that's a different chemical
@nolid7843
@nolid7843 7 лет назад
um ~ i don't think so. talc is magnesium while calcium carbonate is calcium. talc might work for ground but i don't think it's the same thing as chalk. since calcium carbonate is basically antacid/calcium supplement it's probably a good idea to check the health food store or a supplements store like Vitamin Shoppe. i honestly think u can crush up school chalk and get enough for a small batch. back to school's soon which means we can get back to school clearance for pennies on the dollar. if i spot school chalk for cheap(like those crazy 80% off and penny sales) i'll give it a shot. gesso's ridiculously expensive for what it is.

Good idea Clive but I'm not sure the PVA is ph neutral, would this have an effect on the longevity of any painting on top of this surface
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 5 лет назад
It’s basically a resin as far as PH it’s not that technical PVA is a polymer vinyl acetate and if very stable it’s used as a glue and sealer in all industries from building to decoration it’s thinned down with water to make mod podge for art and design so I would assume the PH is ok. If you unsure use acrylic resin but that is very expensive and is basically the same with a few differences. PVA is used in a lot of domestic and art supplies Hope this helps

Baby powder is not the best it can be used but it’s a talc too fine and very unstable chalk is best but if you use it mix to a smooth paste first then add the paint slowly until you get the thickness but it will separate and needs stir every time before use

Hello Clive! thankyou for these amazing tutorials. Sir i wanted to ask you that when my painting got dried there were cracks formed between it. And it even started fading. Is it only because i didn't used gesso before painting?
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 8 лет назад
+Omer Siddiq possible but sounds like over thinning of your paint with water or a poor surface
@joannaskor316
@joannaskor316 8 лет назад
the cause of fading could also be because of colours that were not lightfast.
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 8 лет назад
as far as i know acrylics are light fast only water colours are fugitive
@joannaskor316
@joannaskor316 8 лет назад
That's actually not true, sir. It's not the medium that makes something fade, it's the colour itself. For example aureolin is a colour that fades by nature. Fugitive is not the same as lightfast. Dyes are not lightfast. Most pigments are lightfast, in other words, they don't fade when exposed to light. For your information Daniel Smith watercolours do not fade (90% of them) when exposed to light(see a study that Jane Blundell, who is an expert on watercolour, did on her blog.

Do you know how much the paint weights? I only have a 500ml pot and it would be a lot less messy if I could use the scale :)
@CLIVE5ART

I’m going to remake the video as I now have a new recipe so I’ll use scales in that one

Hi Clive , I am in a bit of a dilemma ! I have painted something for my grandson as a gift so it’s quite important to me . I am fairly new to acrylic, normally use watercolour. Anyway I am quite pleased with the final piece,however the sky dos nt look quite right .The problem being that I made the two outer corners darker going towards the centre lighter, there is a definite line where I did, nt blend enough on both sides. The painting is now dry but I’m a little scared to change the sky not wanting to mess the whole thing up. Could I just go over the line with fresh paint .? Would appreciate your advice . 🤔

is it less expensive to make your own or buy the cheap stuff at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby? I live in the US also.
@CLIVE5ART

Well yes as you can then mix it to your own mix I like a very gritty mix you might like a smooth mix you can save ££££££

Am I right in thinking calcium carbonate is the same as whiting?
@CLIVE5ART

It's powered chalk 🤔

CLIVE5ART powered chalk..wow! 😁 Thanks for response..I think this is what I know as whiting used to clean off lead cement when making stained glass window.

You took all that time to weight everything then you just threw in a few more scoops of chalk in at the end. Why were you trying to be so accurate to begin with?
