Fran's here to tell the tale of the North Ronaldsay sheep, who survived by adapting to a diet of seaweed and kelp. With the beaches of just one Orkney Island their home, just off the north coast of Scotland, hear how Joe Henson, Adam's father and founder of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, saved this rare breed from potential extinction. Fran also explains why we have to be particularly watchful of the level of copper in their diet.

Some of these rare breeds have the most adorable faces. These sheep look so dainty and delicate yet vivacious. Absolutely lovely breed.

This was a great video! Thanks for showing us a sheep that we would not normally see. My wife and I joined the conservation of the Leicester Longwool. One of our difficulties is that they are quite good feeders in the pasture and get to the point that they are not effective breeders. So we have to bring them in early and control their diet. But worldwide we have brought the breed back to over 1000 breeding purebred LL’s. They are very friendly and easy for us old folks!

Well done for helping the Leicester Longwool, they're a beautiful breed. They're quite similar in appearance to our county breed, the Cotswold. Especially with their stunning long growing forelocks.

I'm sorry, but those sheep are no longer North Ronaldsays. As you said at the beginning of the video, the pure North Ronaldsay had evolved over centuries to thrive on a Kelp and seaweed diet. You found that initially they were incapable of surviving on grass. That had to be bred back into them and so they have evolved into a breed similar to the one which existed before they were banished to the shoreline. A farm museum in Orkney had one or two North Ronaldsay's, but those were fed on seaweed harvested from the local shore

The tiny rare breeds would go well here in the US where many people just want a small animal as a pet.

Fran your knowledge is amazing we love watching your little video clips. But unfortunately you were outdone by Richard the Goat who was the star of the show. He made us chuckle as he appeared in every shot. 🤣
