That 39 is a hell of a find! Once you finish with Mad-Scientist-Be-Gone it's remarkably solid. You really got after it on the polish job and what a payoff!

I used to scrape paint & restore iron railings. Back in the day, Naval Jelly was a must to clean up orange blossoms. Made a mess but worked. Nice job on the 39. Ty for taking us along

I did a similar process on my old Fargo truck and it really brought back the paint colour. I then hit it with my power polisher and some polishing compound. Finally I coated the old patina with a clear. Pretty shiny now even the rusty patches.

Hey Matt: Try using a kitchen sponge for the block for your wet sanding. It conforms much better to all of the curves instead of only hitting the high spots. Try it. I think you will be happy. That looks like a really solid car !!

Hey Matt & Steve, great job on cleaning up the paint on the '39 Coupe! WOW! You were dead-on with your analysis - and your work paid off big time. It would be a trip if the previous owner could have seen your results... I'm betting he would have been impressed. Thank goodness you guys got it!

The 39 coupe reminds me of a 40 standard coupe I found in 1967. It was the same color, it was sitting behind a gas station in Chetopa, Kansas. The owner had wanted to make a gasser out of it but had lost interest, It was for sale, I was only 14 and my Dad wouldn't let me buy it no matter how much I begged. I could have bought it for $90.

I know that you really like to lower the fronts on your cars, but I and perhaps some others would prefer to see a stock set up. I grew up with these cars and really like the original look, Great show and thanks for all your work.

That 39 ford looks great. Thanks for the video. I used a Mcguriars product on a red 64 cutlass that had sun damaged back in 73 and it looked much better. That product removed the old oxidized paint and gave it a shine. Unfortunately the sun had done too much damage to get a perfect finish.

Love that Ford Matt. I'd leave it be for a while cause it's a true time capsule. It'd be nice if you shoved a nice high strung flattie in it and make a bit of a sleeper out of it. Chemical Guys stuff ... I thought they're products were my secret. I've been using they're stuff for a while and am very happy with it. Anyway "Hey" to everyone and give Moon a pat for me. Remember back when new the paint was lacquer very soft rather than more newer cars that were painted with acrylic lacquer that is harder and more durable.

I believe the cowl vent was sealed with Permagum, a putty used by electricians. It stays put and pliable.

mad scientist "sealing" up the vent makes me cringe. I'm redoing a cj5 and the previous owner use to melt toilet wax rings to seal up leaks. does a good job unless you are trying to remove it so you can fix things properly. well done polishing this girl up. I look forward to the next.

The paint came back pretty good especially compared to when you pulled it out of its storage/hiding! You guys put a ton of work into getting that shine. The 39 Deluxe and 40 Deluxe and standard are my favorite body styles. Can't wait to see it on the road!

Wow ! A lot of work , but just look at that shine ! A sharp looking car ! It's been a very long time since that one has had that much attention . Looking forward to more done on it mechanically , to get it ready for show season . New brake system & exhaust . Baby's got back , lol , one could put a lot of junk in that trunk ! What a difference! I remember, when I was 12 or so, trying to get the paint back on my Dad's 250V8 Daimler with T cut, by hand. It was so dusty flat. A nightmare that took months! 😃 But I enjoyed it. I will bet, Professional Detailers are looking at this vid and saying, "You did what!" Lol

Totally agree about the wheels. I was thinking the same thing. I love these "survivors" when the paint shows it age like this one and the wheels and tires are made to look "fresh" and stand out !! A darker/contrasting but brighter color on the wheels so the shiny trim pops along with nicely dressed new tires. "DONE" !!!

Sorry to bug you. Hey get some of that stuff called trim shine by a company called Stoner. They have it at O’Reillys I know and it would make those runningboards look really cool. You just spray it on old rubber stuff and it makes it look brand new.

Looks like it turned out really nice. I happened upon Chemical Guys products a couple of years ago. Very happy with their stuff. Literally used a major brand ( TV guy 😁) for decades and thought it was the best. Chemical guys get some of my business now. All good!

Really excellent. Had no idea that was possible. I think if you replace the running boards, that coupe would be impeccable. Let me ask: do you have to replace them? Recover them? Not sure how that happens. Also curious what it would cost to fix/replace those running boards. Thx!

Looks very good after a solid 2 days, 2 guys cleaning up and buffing. Paint and chrome trim stand out. Bumpers and grill standout. Pop-up vent with gasket ensures some additional ventilation. Curious on the retro rebuilds, occasionally seasonally driven, how do you negotiate appropriate insurance?
