Saving a Clamshell iBook G3 SE - Power Jack Repair and SSD Upgrade

In this video we're resurrecting a sick iBook Clamshell Special Edition, which is a very special iBook indeed. It's the last and fastest of all the iBook Clamshells at 466Mhz, and the only one with FireWire and a stock DVD drive. That makes it the only Clamshell iBook to be officially Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger compatible.

Our iBook has a broken power jack, which requires disassembling the entire machine to get to. Fortunately, the DC-IN is on a daughter board, which we can replace without soldering. While we're in there, let's install a 60GB mSATA SSD using an IDE enclosure!

I've got a soft spot for the clamshells and have managed to collect one of each color. It was interesting to watch this, since I've installed SSDs in several of these using the exact same enclosure from Amazon. (It's not a bad idea to check that it's working before reassembly for what it's worth, since I've heard of some people having compatibility issues with certain SSDs and clamshells.) I've also repaired an AC jack in one of these before -- in my case it was just a matter of resoldering the connector. You can still buy new batteries for these machines by the way, although they are a little expensive at $60 from Powerwarehouse on Newegg. My lasts about 6 hours though.

Wow thanks for the tip about the battery! I was scouring eBay and no luck! I also have a clamshell soft spot - I'm on the hunt for a tangerine next, which is one I used to have ~10 years ago but sadly sold.

Did this to my ‘99 Blueberry iBook recently to swap the dead 3.2GB drive for a 20GB spinner. And this of course was before I realized I could toss an SSD in there, so I’m going to have to relive this nightmare again, as 20GB is a little claustrophobic with a 9.2.2+10.3.9 dual boot. 🙃 Can’t wait!

Oh wow, anyone who opens an iBook up that much should get a trophy! It's so strange though because I tried that EXACT mSATA IDE enclosure on my iBook and it didn't work AT ALL. Hmmm, it must have been faulty as I would have preferred using the mSATA SSD over the CF Card that I had to go with. Glad it worked for you though. :)

I installed the same type of SSD drive in both my clamshells. However, I put the drive in a FireWire enclosure so I could partition it and install OS9 and Tiger beforehand. That way I knew the drive worked before all disassembly mayhem.

@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 4 года назад
Yeah, I think so! My original 233 MHz has a different issue though. It lights up green (used to light up orange when there was still a tiny bit of battery life left) when plugged in but that's the only sign of life it gives. I got it as "dead, for parts" with no picture and a bunch of other issues. Found a replacement logic board, took the whole blasted thing to bits, replaced the board, only to discover during reassembly that the display data cable had one wire torn out of the connector - the board was probably fine all along. All the other "issues" were due to the previous idiot not plugging stuff back in when he hastily reassembled his failure. I ended up stripping the very end of that wire, stuffing it into the connector and supergluing it in place. Worked for a while but then something else died. Might have to do another board swap.

@@ActionRetro I just edited my comment, but yes, the display was cracked but I've replaced it, with one from a different brand, but from a g3 clamshell. The HDD spins up, so thats how I know it powers up. Also it came without a battery. Might this be the issue?
@ActionRetro

It will definitely work without the battery - mine has no battery installed. Are you able to plug an external keyboard in to it? Maybe you can get it into target disk mode that way.
@laurensnieuwland4657
@laurensnieuwland4657 4 года назад
@@ActionRetro well, the issue is, the screen appears to be dead when I turn it on. Literally the only sign of life I get is a green light around the charging port and a spinning hard drive. I've connected a keyboard and tried every possible reset keycombo but nothing appears to help. Also, target disk wouldn't be helpful anyways, because it is a model without a firewire port.

I have 2 clamshell SE's and I got an engineer to install an SSD in one of them and it didn't work although it was a different brand. In the end I hd to pay twice to replace it with a fast 7200 rpm drive of a large capacity. My Lime green needs updating but technicians charge £100 to do it and the cost of the SSD on top. so it's no go for me.

Thank you so much for this. I'm just about to start working on mine for a hard drive upgrade, but I'm wondering if I should also try fixing an audio jack in the same go as I can't stand to open this thing up more than once. The other channel is very quiet so I can't really use the audio output. The problem is, I've had trouble finding any material on anyone touching the audio port and it's hard to even find close up images of how it's connected and made. You're repairing a different jack here so you seem to have some idea. Do you think that the audio jack could be repairable in the same way? Or even replaceable, by desoldering the old one? Suppose you don't have any close-ups of that area either, unless you've had to work on ports on that side and documented it!

@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 4 года назад
Apple laptop repair is hardly ever easy but the only thing I'd rate worse than this job is the white iBook G4 and its PowerBook brothers. The manual says things like: "Remove the following 41 screws", not kidding! I tried to do an LCD panel swap on a PowerBook 1 GHz, what a nightmare! I think the replacement screen was broken too but haven't really investigated any further. I got two sort-of broken PowerBooks from the same idiot as the Clamshell, one was put together and sort-of working, the other one was in bits. Reportedly the parts donor had a broken logic board but I suspect it might actually have been a screen issue. I can't even remember why we did the swap, possibly we actually tried to swap the whole display assembly because the rear bezel was damaged, not the display itself. Then the plug came off the airport antenna wire to make matters worse. The two carcasses have been sitting on my floor for at least five years, probably more.
