The SD1 is a legend both in motorsport and as a road car. In this video I start again on restoring an SD1 and getting it back on the road after spending time in a barn and in storage for 18 years unused and abandoned. This car was taken from a none runner to a car basically ready for it's MOT minus a few bits.

Well done Tom, braver man than me dealing with the mice stuff.

Wonderful to see someone bothering with the six pot, I had these back in the day when they were just a cheap car. One thing with the six cylinder, you can never do enough oil changes. It's vital.

Good progress Tom. In my experience the electric window operation will respond well to the control relay terminals being cleaned up. You’ll find the relays behind each door card, very easy to get to & an easy fix / improvement.

I had a 2600s manual back in the 90s and it was nearly as quick as the auto V8 VDP I had later. Very underrated car in it's time that was supposedly detuned by Rover so as not to steal sales from it's bigger brother. I hope it brings you many miles and years of happiness.

Congratulations on some great progress on the SD1 - it’s shaping up really well! Also, congratulations on the radiogram - I used to have a Bush ‘gram, with a Garard turntable - a lovely thing. Sadly now gone - it went to a care home! They’re lovely things though, if you have the space!

Thanks Simon, she is doing well. And yes I love these lovely old units I’ve only got space for one and I’ve been told I’ll be out if I buy any more radios although I may get a few more and keep them in the office ;)

Nice work! Glad you did the sound deadening. That will help improve the feeling of solidity. Did you do the doors? A tip for the door cards - if you want to make them feel more substantial, coat the backs in a fibreglass resin or similar. It makes the cardboard stiffer. You could then line with foam on the back to cushion them against the doors themselves. I did this on my Dad’s back in the day and it really helped.

I will be doing the doors yes soon just need to sort the mechanisms out again. I'll have a look at your tip thanks a lot!

@tomdrives can't argue on that mate sd1 Is hands down the best rover love them cars. I to have a sd1 but still a long ways off I have a vandan plas v8 which I've had for about 2 years I have spent about $10k on parts alone. Done all the rust repairs. Cleaned and painted underneath the car and so on. I will be taking out the engine and doing a complete rebuild to it but all in all should be back on the road by late 2024

My first car was a Rover SD1 2600S but it was an older car on a W plate RKO 83W, auto with twin SU carbs. Wish i could find another one. I wish it had a manual gear box aswell. Good luck with your car, can't wait to see it back on the road. 👍

I LOVE the Rover SD1! I almost had one just like this (the 2.6ltr) as my first car. But this being the early 90s and when insurance prices went crazy due to all the car theft, joyriding, ramraiding etc. So instead i bought something that to me looked kinda similar (but nowhere NEAR as cool!) a Cavalier hatchback with a more affordable 1.6ltr. But i have ALWAYS loved these stunning cars. The SD1 has to be one of the best looking high end cars ever made. I also owned the Clarkson video where he creates a black, wide arched 5.2ltr V8 that looked and sounded truly epic!
@Luton-Mick

I had one as my first car back in 93, gold 2600s however as there was no anpr's back then insurance was very cheap provided you didn't bring attention on yourself. 😉😆

@@Luton-Mick i tried getting one in 1992-3 so pretty much the same time as you! I even went out on a test drive in a very nice condition 2600 and desperately wanted it, until those insurance quotes at least. i was absolutely gutted! I live in Essex and our roads are constantly FULL of Old Bill so i couldn`t really risk driving without (as it was i received a LOT of 7 day wonders, not for being naughty or anything but just for cruising round and round the town or nearby Chelmsford/Colchester) as the chance of getting tugged was high. Our local pub/pool hall (the Essex Barn) even had a guy there that owned a SD1 V8 so i used to see and hear that (the guy used to thrash the shite outta it haha!) roaring out the car park most nights! I also later knew a guy with a V8 Vitesse, bit tatty but still my ultimate dream car of the day. A little later on into my 20s i got into hot hatches instead, just as quick but cheaper to run. But i still always lusted after the SD1, still do. It will always have a place in my ultimate Dream Car Garage along with a Lotus Carlton, TVR Cerbera, Griffith, VXR8, Ariel Atom and others.

In my dream garage there would definitely be a Rover SD1! My dream version would be black (or maybe that Lotus Carlton colour flip dark green/black. The that being another of my dream cars) with the flared arch kit. Then I'd get rid of that Rover V8 for something newer and free revving (not stangled like the poor Rover V8) so maybe the Ford Mustang 5.0/5.2ltr or the Chevy 6.2ltr crate motors for an easy bog standard, reliable and guaranteed 500+bhp (a figure you would NEVER get from a Rover V8!) all the way to a standard 700bhp (factory supercharged standard engines) Then id possibly steal the interior from a Rover 75? Obviously all fantasyland stuff but i can but dream haha!

i always wondered why rover never made the hatch open to bumper level , and now seeing you take out the rear light cover and carpet i have my answer , bloody lazy , the indicators are at the corner of the car (so hazards would work) if you lifted the hatch , the indicator has plenty of space to separate from the rest of the lights that would be on the hatch or maybe just more cost cutting
