Sunny skies and warm temps provide the perfect backdrop for playtime in Central Park in Brooklyn Park. But everything stops when kids hear the magical sound of an ice cream truck.
In this case, the owner of the Blue Moo Ice Cream truck knows a thing or two about being a kid and loving ice cream.
"Most of the time you just hear them scream "ice cream," said Duane Helms-Boyd, who is 14 years old and runs the truck.
The Brooklyn Park resident started his ice cream business last year to help save for college. His parents put up the money for the truck and drive him around, while Duane serves up ice cream treats.
"I wanted to do something for the community and I wanted to do something fun. So I thought, 'who doesn't like ice cream?'" he said.
Duane's stops mostly include Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center. The go-getter teen not only gets a kick out of dishing out delicious treats, but he uses some of his earnings to help charities. Duane decided to give 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of Jonny Pops to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
"We love Blue Moo," said customer Alexis Campbell. "What Duane does for the different charities that he gives back to. He's just an awesome kid."
While the kids really enjoy eating the ice cream goodies. Duane says he and his family get a treat too.
"Seeing the kids jump up and down is mainly the thing that puts a smile on all our faces," said Duane.
Duane's ice cream prices are also reasonable, around $1 or $2. The teen says he wants families to be able to afford the tasty treats.
