Well said. .Unfortunately there were some people out there in that town that didn't love Luna. There were death threats against him, and they eventually got him. . .And it makes me sick, even to this day it makes me sick what they did to him. .

please please please, bring this to DVD, it deserves to be shown to everyone, a truly heart wrenching and compassionate story about a being who showed us all how to live and not care about the little things that drive us all to the brink, a magical creature and all it wanted was friendship and to be loved.. this was brilliant, it made me cry.. it made me laugh.. but most of all, it made me feel. Not many movies/documentaries do that anymore... this needs wider attention, it is brilliant.

Friendship is friendship, irrespective of species...We are not "fused at the hip" with our human friends...It's unrealistic for people to try to control every single aspect of life on this planet (how's that workin' for us??). **Unconditional love and care are never wasted-- on anyone ♥

I would have went against the government to just be with this whale and be his friend.I would never let anyone no matter what their status tell me I can't befriend a beautiful creature that was just like us,a being that was lost and lonely and needed companionship,what is so wrong with showing compassion and love towards a poor animal that needs contact and wants to be loved? It's like they are saying it's wrong to show affection towards something that isn't human and thats WRONG!!! It's so wrong on so many levels and it really shows how the world is going these days.Its getting so cold and detached and I notice it every single day and it scares me.

I disagree. It was bad enough L98 was alone and had no killer whale companions. You aren’t helping him by befriending him. It’s not good when a highly social animal becomes connected to humans, because then they start seeking out human attention, and this could cause him to not want to go back to his pod (L Pod). Humans shouldn’t interfere with nature. As cute as L98 is, I think it’s best to leave him alone. The less attention he gets, the more likely he will stay away from humans. This can result in less boat collisions, and other threats that could harm him. Sadly, L98 was killed in a ship strike, before they could transport him in a sea pen back to Puget Sound and the waters where his family swims in. Even I knew from reading the book “The Lost Whale” the closer you got to him, the more likely he would break your heart.

I understand you wanting to give him attention, but the less you interact with him, the more likely he is to stay wild. I would’ve wanted to give him all my attention too, but that would be wrong, because these are wild animals. Luna needed to be loved by his family, his mother L67, his cousins, aunts and uncles.

have just seen this incredible documentary on Luna, on British tv ....what a wonderful story. Such a shame that Luna died so young - what can we learn from this? do we leave wild creatures alone or accept their friendship? So sad.

Actually there were a lot of issues at the time with idiots putting beer and cigarettes in his mouth and things like that. Keeping Luna safe from people was a large part of the motivation for the bans. If a reintroduction had happened Luna would probably still be alive (it worked for Springer), but it seemed likely he would end up in captivity permanently (like Morgan), so it was averted. Things are always a lot trickier than they seem.

Have you seen the film? Those women loved Luna, but they were employed to prevent him interacting with boats and to distract him from dangerous situations. They adored him.

So sad this has affected me deeply. No animal deserves to be captured and forced into a life it wouldn't naturally live. Luna was an amazing creature, truly "jumping" the wall between humans and the natural world. I cried my heart out when I heard Luna died. RIP Luna, the stitch that closed the gap between two worlds for me.

Wild animals should always belong to the wild and their natural families. I believe that if a separated wild sentient being, such as the orca, spends too long a time with humans and is prevented from reuniting with his family, he will gradually lose his sense of belonging. It might be difficult to reunite him with his pod should another chance of reunion occurred, which sadly didn't happen in Luna's case :(. I would think that prolonged interaction with humans in boats/RIB also caused him to become desensitized to threats and dangers e.g. boats in which a wild orca who does not interact with humans in this way would have avoided.

Poor Luna. I wouldn’t have given him attention, as much as it would hurt me. But it would’ve hurt me more if I did give him attention, because the closer I would’ve grown to him the more he would’ve broken my heart. 😢

You should watch Soul in the Sea when it gets to the UK. It's about a friendly dolphin called Moko that I used to swim with, and although there was some conflict about him the Minders system actually worked extremely well.

I love the movie tagline,"A life does not have to be human to be great".very true.animals have it easier than humans..as long as they have their 'family' and basic needs,they're happy.they don't have to worry about dwindling economy or cheating boyfriends.

Remember what was said about the damage of the push-pull relationships that people call friendship and how after 6 years there was a danger of damaging Luna with this inconsistency? So we need to remember this as humans (the superior race - huh?) that our friendships are only as good as they are consistent.

I understand those people love Luna but by them given him attention he wouldn't go find his family..ketp him by boats it's dangerous for him. Instead leaving be . He lost his life because humans being selfish. Don't get me wrong I love those animals .

They tried leaving him be and even enforcing it heavily. He began to sneak up boats from than on, which was how he accidentally got under a propeller. The government really did inadvertently kill him.

Hi Mountainside Films! I am from the Philippines. I caught the tail end of your documentary on TV tonight (director's cut) and I was extremely moved by Luna's story. I'm desperate to watch the whole film and see how it all came about. Could you please make your film available on Vimeo or RU-vid for rent or purchase? I understand this may be a very lengthy process but I do hope you can make this happen. I'd normally order the DVD or Blu-ray but our Customs Dept adds crazy taxes on single purchases like this, so I fear it may be too expensive for my budget. :( Hope you might consider it. I think it's a great movie and Luna is one person whose spirit should never be forgotten. Thank you!

really?! why? where can i see the documentary or the movie? so sad.. i have seen the trailer and i think luna chose to live that way becoz he has no family anymore..and orcas are very sociable mammals.. so they need to socialize to make them happy and keep going.wether with fellow orcas or humans..

Jehovah can use a whale to teach love. Humans were to selfish to put wire cages around props to protect luna, he was not worth the effort. Humans say they love but do nothing to show love, that is not love, luna gave his life for love. Humans give nothing for love. Words are all humans give. It is wicked to deny an animal love when he wants to be loved. Humans were to wicked to make an effort to make it safe for him. The sound was his home. Humans will spend billions to kill life but not a cent to save life. Luna came to reach love but exposed how shallow humans love.

Daniel Madden That's true about a lot of humans.I know there are some like myself that would give up everything in order to be with Luna and I would have in a heartbeat.I wouldn't care if they charged me $100.000, I would say you can fine me all you want but I'm not leaving this whale.I would have a petition made and fight to get him back with his family.I just wish I knew about all of this years ago so I could have done something.I live in Canada too but not this place where he was and I can't believe none of this was on the news where I lived.
