Clive Porabou's Trailer for his new Documentary "Saving Our Land", on the struggle of the indigenous population of Mekamui/Bougainville against the re-opening of Panguna mine by Rio Tinto's subsidy Bougainville Copper Limited. Panguna mine brought many problems to Mekamui and the war and military blockade which followed its closure in 1989 had cost the lives of 20 000 people, which was a fifth of the population. None of the indigenous people living on the Land and from the Land want the mine re-opened. They have opposed the principles of large-scale- mining already in the 60's and just want to live in peace and harmony without the intrusion of international companies ripping them of their resources and destroying and polluting their island.

Good work! This will get the real message out! The voices of the people who live there more important than the greedy outsiders who just want to make money for themselves.

Those sympathizers and supporters have the same ideas of our mother earth that is why they support us morally, spiritually and through media to voice our side of the story which is not entertained by the mainstream media. The mainstream media is mostly controlled by the mining company with money power. There are schools, clinics and other services in Mekamui/Bougainville, nobody is stopping such services.

Some outsiders who are crazy to rip our Island apart are saying that we are remotely controlled and financed from London. That is a total bullshit from a people desperate to turn our island into a desert from its natural beauty that we are enjoying today. Why would we be controlled from outside, we are not robots? We fought with the above principles and we still stand on them.

Thanks for the reply. I've never been to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. At a basic level, it strikes me that the people must want economic development (whether they link mining to that or not). In the clips I see here, the people look poor & uneducated. I think no People on Earth have ever chosen that, even if it looks romantic to outsiders. Per a clip I saw, the President of the ARB seems to envisage mining coming back. I wish them the best on whatever development path they choose.

I wish the people of Bougainville all the best with their independence. I hope another war over this damn mine does not start between the people. I also hope that in your three part system of government, that any one part can remove administrators from office to prevent yourselves from being victimized by a majority of 2/3. Keep your administration as small as possible so that it may serve to protect the rights of the people, and defend them from outsiders who would steal from you. Those are the only two legitimate reasons for keeping a government administration in place. If any of them fail at this task, it should be made in your organic constitution more easy to kick them out of office than it was to put them in office.

Cheers Bakapiaaru..

Mekamui Hardliners Stand Mekamui Hardliners will always voice out the silent majority voices based on the principles that the BRA fought for. If we don’t uphold the principles than our comrades, relatives, brothers, sisters, fathers and mother’s blood will be spilt in vain. The four basic principles are: We fought 1. To save our land and environment 2. To save our culture and customs 3. To save our future generation 4. For Independence

Dear SunnyWinterMorning the Mekamuians/Bougainvillians estimate that at least 80% of their population is totally opposed to large scale mining on their native Island. Lots of them are educated. Grassroots Peoples and Educated ones alike can see that they can use their land again and again if they use it for gardening and tourism and actually will add value to it that way and not destroy and poison it for future generations. They say NO MINING, INDEPENDENCE and COMPENSATION must come FIRST.

We see that the 4 principles are basic in the life of the Mekamui people. That is why we joined in the war. In regards to mining issues: we want to save our land, that is why we fought. So why should we have to entertain mining again after so many of us died and were wounded to close it?

Interesting video. Were any of the people featured educated beyond a basic level ? Assuming the answer is no, are there any educated people in the area ? Do they tend to have the same view (i.e. "no industrial mining") ?

Dear Mr Petertoxic Re "[d]o you refer to an ability to read and write in English and the consequential exposure to the ism's and political ideologies of the western world?" - Yes, I do. One important "ism" here is capitalism. I wonder if you live in B now, & if not (1) whether you live in a country which has followed a successful development path, & (2) do you honestly believe it would be a successful country if a large proportion of its people did not understand these "isms" etc?
