To me, the best part of the entire movie is when Ryan and Reiben are in the hole together as the tanks are approaching and Ryan looks at Reiben, and Reiben gives a small nod of respect. Not a word is spoken, but there is a lot conveyed between the two in the moment.

The German who stabbed the guy in the upper room was not the prisoner they let go earlier it was another German soldier , but the soldier they did let go he went back into the german army ranks and ended up shooting tom hanks on the bridge , then upham eventually shot him when they surrendered , amazing movie , i was speechless for the longest after watching this the first time

@JoyoSnooze
@JoyoSnooze 3 года назад
Honestly, I think the reason why people get confused is because the film only emphasises those two Germans, so people automatically presume it's the same guy. In a lot of people's minds, the 'original' soldier was let go so it therefore makes some form of 'story' sense that he's the one to come back and kill a member of the squad, which of course he does, it's just not Fish. I'm personally glad that that character's involvement wasn't that of the soldier who kills Fish. Upham functions as the 'moral' viewpoint for the audience, most of whom haven't been in war or killed a person. That makes his one kill of the man who he pleaded mercy for, an enemy soldier, all the more profound and personal. One that speaks the loudest amongst the carnage and conflict.
@feltpen7
@feltpen7 3 года назад
@@JoyoSnooze Good point. I also think that when the soldier who kills fish walks by a bum and doesn’t kill him when he’s going down the stairs is more powerful when knowing that he has no connection to him at all other than thinking he’s just a coward and not worth killing. A lot of people I think the reason why he doesn’t kill him is because they think it’s the guy from earlier on which is less powerful imo
@edm240b9
@edm240b9 3 года назад
Some things people don’t realize about Cpl. Upham is that he’s a non-combatant. He’s not meant to be a frontline soldier, so his fighting abilities is nowhere’s near what Miller’s squad. His hesitation in combat is a very real thing that happens even in combat today and that happened in the past.

My maternal grandfather was stationed at Peleliu during WWII. I never met him because he died in 1984. But from what my mother or my grandmother told me, he loved movies. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark was his favorite. I think he would be most pleased with this film and tickled since Steven Spielberg directed it. You must watch Schindler’s List. It’s imperative that you react to that masterpiece.

To ad some more info: The reason why the beach was so heavily defended was because the Naval and aerial bombardment, which was supposed to soften up the defenses and give the landing soldiers craters for cover, missed because of fog. That meant the Rangers landed and met the full force of Hitlers Atlantic Wall.

I saw this film twice in theaters when it released, once with my father and then again on my own. So well done. Also unfortunately the man in the beginning would have still gotten killed if he kept his helmet on. The first ping was a glancing hit by the bullet. The second round that got him would have cut through the helmet like butter. Those old GI helmets were not intended to stop supersonic bullets, but slower moving shrapnel and debris. Edit: After that ping he should have immediately gotten down asap, so he's not the sharpest tool in the shed for just sitting there....but its hard to judge the guy (mainly cuz its a movie). After landing and actually making it to the seawall im sure his senses are overloaded and its easy to make simple mistake after literally crawling through blood and carnage.

When Cpt. Miller whispers to Pvt. Ryan, "Earn this." I think it holds a greater meaning. ALL of us today should strive to 'earn' our lives and futures. Because of their efforts, dedication and sacrifice, we have the luxury of living today. The world of today would have been horribly different had it not been for the defeat of Nazi Germany. The next time you're out and about, and you see an elderly man tottering down the sidewalk with a cane, or being pushed in a wheelchair. And, you notice he's wearing a D-Day Veteran cap. You should show MAD RESPECT to this old gent. Because 77 years ago, he was in a Hell most people couldn't conceive in their wildest nightmares. Because of his efforts back then, you have a future now.

The German who stabbed Mellish to death up the staircase was not "Steamboat Willie", they just look similar, but are two different actors. Steamboat was Wehrmacht, the other guy was Waffen SS. It was Steamboat, however, who shot Tom Hanks (after having his life saved by him) and was then shot by Upham.

That guy 6:04 who got a glancing shot in the helmet, then takes it of and then gets shot straight in the middle of his forehead would not have survived anyway. Those helmets are only good for shrapnel and low speed defections. I was in the Army back in 1973, made Sargent in late 1976 ( 173rd Assault Helicopter Company UH-1 Huey Mechanic/M60 Doorgunner, ) and then got out and pretty much wore the same helmet and that is what my drill instructor told us. Thin steel (see it when he holds it taking it off) on a floating (not steel ) helmet liner will not stop anything coming at you straight on. That policy is real about removing the lone (male) survivor in a family.

The cinematography, the cast and acting, even the dialogue, the practical effects sweet lord the practical effects, the set designs and props to even the faded look. Great react! Saw this one as a child. A movie you should react to is a kurdish movie called Turtles can fly. It's an amazing movie.

Do you know that if we hadn't went over there, we'd all be speaking German right now? A pen pal in the UK told me this!

Good reaction. I’ve seen over a dozen reactions of this movie and no one has recognized Ted Danson yet. I guess y’all are too young to know who he is. 👴🏻

The Sullivan Brothers died when their ship was sunk….there were 5 of them. A whole generation of family wiped out. After them the Military put a policy in place so no family members Brothers ect. Weren’t allowed to serve in the same units.

I have nothing but respect and admiration for every World War II veteran that served. And it absolutely disgusts me to see what the Democratic Party is presently doing to this country knowing what they went through

The only nitpick I have on this movie is when Mellish said “we got him” with a smile after the sniper got killed. It just didnt seem loke an appropriate reaction when his friend was basically dead on the ground still.

You not one thing about why this movie was made. Spielberg and Tom Hanks have produced a series of WWII veterans talking about Dday and many battles. The point is they and I honor these men. They are the greatest generation. I am sure Spielberg and Hanks are sick of hearing about how well this movie was made. They want people to remember the men who fought for freedom or they wouldn't have made the long documentary. My great uncles fought in WWII and they could not talk about it. You should spread around to all your friends the seriousness of this war.
