Many people know that the world is in serious trouble because of pollution. What people don't know is that there are actually many success stories where environmental policies have worked really well. We could accomplish so much by building on that track record. I am a professor of sociology at Umeå University and a researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm. My career has taken me around the world. I am originally from western Canada, and have also lived in the United States, Mexico, England, and now Sweden. My research is mostly about public attitudes towards environmental issues and policies, and in other projects I also study trust and globalization. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I agree with the environmental taxes! A good example of incentive-based instruments

The problem that I would have with the pollution tax has more to do with corrupt government bureaucracies and how they would spend the money

As a citizen in the U.S.A., I think that the government has a very poor track record for spending tax revenues wisely. If this government was capable of addressing environmental problems effectively, it would already be doing so. I am most definitely not in favor of paying higher taxes, because the money will almost certainly be squandered by the bungling politicians in control of the budget.

'Private partners' aka their buddies on Wall St take contracts and eat up billions while doing nothing.

A better solution could be taking 10% from the billionaires across the world. Around 2700 billionaires have 13 trillion dollars, so 10% of it could be 1.3 trillion dollars. This is enough to fund UNEP 1 trillion tree project along with various other environment saving projects.

British Columbia has the most expensive gasoline in North America, with the possible exception of the Yukon. This is how the CO2 reduction occurs, by pricing the poor out of their cars. BC also has high cost, government monopoly auto insurance, which also keeps poor people from driving and using as much heat in winter as they would like. Bravo.

That would be pretty great, reduce taxes and make up the difference in environmental pollution taxes
