This is why it pisses me off when people say here in America, “this is America, only speak English”. I believed it until about a couple years ago. I regret not learning different languages as a kid. I now speak, obviously English, but also Spanish, French, Italian, and a bit of German now. I advise ALL Americans to at least try to learn other languages. It’s great not only for your brain, but also for traveling, etc. This beautiful planet has so many beautiful languages with amazing history. As we’re all of one race, the human race, we should be proud of all languages our amazing race had created throughout history. Let’s keep them alive people! We created them! ✊🏼🌎 🇺🇸

I've always been a total language Freak. So linguistics has also been a passion. A question I would pose is, just 'when' is a language a full-fledged 'language', and no longer a long-drawn-out dialect ? Seemingly on paper, the answer is supposedly rather clear-cut, there are however plenty of those who will take issue. 'Communication', just what the hell is it really ? Facinating ?

Millions is an overstatement because majority of the languages that exist are a variation of a language family. Before the numerous Austronesian languages existed for example, there was one language they spoke until they spread out and evolved differently. What is sad to say is the death of cultures coincides the deaths of languages.

you know there's more than 19500 languages and dialects currently spoken in India, of only 122 of which are spoken by 10000 people or more. The list of endangered languages there is huge, not to mention the languages extinct and forgotten due to colonialism and the modern age. But at the same time linking the world through language I think is good for the world, and while i think some differences would exist and languages should be preserved, some interconnection is good. Sadly some things have to die out for new things right?

It doesn't really make sense to call a living language "old". Languages aren't "invented" at some fixed point in time. Every language alive today has been spoken continuously, evolving over time, since language first arose in humans. They're all the same age.
