While I could never have what Laura and Aaron have as far as gardens, Hartley etc. I could never be jealous or critical. It’s been a lot of hard work to get where they are and well deserved! If some people can’t appreciate that why bother watching? Opinions and conversations are also part of what I like about this. I learn from them as well. It saddens me that although it’s few, some seem to resent what others have and can be down right rude and hurtful. 😢

Even with all the chaos the property is really coming along! I hope Aaron makes a drone video to show the progression from this spring to winter for a "What we planted this year" type video, with the heavy equipment projects included or not, I don't know you film it I'll watch it no matter what. Thanks for all you do, I feel totally blessed feeling like a distant relative sharing your life, knowledge, goodwill and generosity with me. ❤❤❤from the mitten

I had a small garden at my home in Tulsa, OK 15 years ago and when I am looking at your channel it reminds me of my garden, but mine was a lot smaller. I do love that you and Aaron are such a good team. I worked in my garden alone and I had a small pond with a waterfall. My neighbor would say it was unnatural for a woman to drain the pond and clean it out after winter. I just remember it brought me such joy to clean out the pond. Getting the water clear with the correct ph level after so many leaves fell. Also working on my roses was just pure joy. I really enjoy your channel. That Auger looks awesome.

Orchids that bloom for the first time do the same thing as what you described your roses did. The second bloom cycle on an orchid is when you really see the true bloom color and also the fragrance ... if it happens to be fragrant. I am loving the cleared out back space. Aaron just oozes with satisfaction. Especially when I mentioned another opportunity to trench 😅

Laura, when I moved my (old) roses last year, I had the same issue, not able to save enough root ball. I cut the leaf canopy back quite hard (about half of the canopy) - and they've done really well this year. I'm in Australia, and in a similar dry climate (although not as cold a Winter as you get) and we are now in Spring and the roses have put on loads of new growth since the move.

Are you going to plant some of those large evergreens there to hide the view of your neighbors RV cover? Oh and at the end of the video when you were driving around looking at things, I just wanted you to keep driving and take us on a little drive all over the property and look at things. Regarding the roses, with so little root system to support a rather large canopy, wouldn’t it be a good idea to cut the canopy way back in order for the plant to concentrate on root growth only and not trying to support top growth? Winter is coming anyway and the top isn’t going to be pretty until next Spring.

Agree! Have moved so many roses over the past 20 years and you always need to chop back by at least half so the roots can get going. Otherwise the canes die back and the plant suffers over the next season. But I wouldn't be surprised that Laura does that later anyway - she may have left them like that to show viewers how they would look in the landscape 😊

We had a Joseph's Coat climbing rose planted on the arbor to the entrance to our home and when our property burned in the wildfire in 2018 of course that rose burned too. However, a year later that rose came back with a little fresh green so we dug it up to move it to the new location of our house on that same property and barely got any rootball with it. That thing was gnarly. The top was scarred and burnt but I planted it anyway. From the graft up was gone so it came back from the root stock and is no longer the Joseph's Coat. That is one tough plant. It's just a pinkish red climbing rose but it is MASSIVE! It is one of the very few things left to me after the fire that took out everything we owned and built for over twenty years on ten acres and that rose is precious to me. I do cherish it and am so grateful to have it.

Question for Aaron: can he explain needing a bridge wide enough and low enough to accommodate the lawn mower? Wouldn't he be able to access both ends of the grass walking path without needing to cross the bridge? He could mow as close to the bridge as possible on each side and then use the trimmer to clean up the rest. I think a bridge over the pond would be so charming. I'm totally envisioning a smaller version of the gardens and bridge in Claude Monet's paintings with the weeping willow in the background and maybe some water lilies dotted across the pond. I know whatever you decide to do will end up looking beautiful, whether there is a bridge or not!

Yay!! To saving the roses 🌹🌹🌹 and the more boxwoods the merrier I say. I completely get the need to reimagine a previously owned space. I’m currently working on a rose garden that was planted in 1969 and hasn’t been really taken care of in the last 15-20 years. Your process sfor reimagining your space is very similar to mine. I too see your Hartley as an extension of your home and not for the large and particularly messy, large jobs of the garden but the prettier more scaled down and “cleaner” ones. I really appreciate you pointing out things that are thriving in your garden (superbena as a landscape plant) and those that aren’t. I make notes for myself on my next years plantings and will definitely try superbena in the landscape rather than just pots & baskets. Have a wonderful day ☀️ from Sidney BC 🇨🇦 zone8b

I bought a house in Virginia that had an established yard with many different plants. On one side of the house was a rose bush. For several years it did nothing in the way of blooming. So I decided that I would give it one more chance to bloom. I stood over the bush and told it that I was going to dig it up and throw it away if it did not bloom for me in the spring. Well, come spring it bloomed a huge pale pink rose that was absolutely gorgeous and I hope it’s still blooming today, because I sold the house and moved back to Texas.

The path walkways are great in the south garden, but will you be making the new grass path varying widths to make it more natural and meandering-like? Having the view limited from the Hartley by plantings may cause it to revert to the being used less and thought of mode it was in before. I love the idea of a pond. I think even a flat wood bridge over would be fun. Thank you for the little drive around the property at the end. It is always nice to see how things are doing.

Big difference, love how open it looks without the fence and plants. Plus, you can see all the new trees along the back edge. A pond would look awesome and if it is big enough you can add a bridge across one end. Have you thought of making part of the area a playground for the kids. Swingset, seesaw, monkey bars. Would be a good area for one now that it is open so you can see the kids from most areas of your backyard while your working.

I rescued a yellow rose this spring that had barely any roots. I was skeptical and was reminded that roses are tough shrubs. It bloomed profusely throughout the season with yellow flowers! Good luck!

I've heard that you always cut back top of plant when roots are cut during transplant.

Hi Laura my daughter (4) and I watch your videos everyday after she's finished school ( we`re from the UK). We love watching your videos and are creating our own cottage style back garden as well as growing veggies and fruit. We are planning on adding some roses in our garden which rose would you go for for a cottage style garden? Keep up the fab work and all the best 💗

Wow, I'm looking forward to what you do with the now barren space. I'm sure it will be amazing. I also took your advice and cut down a plant . It had blight and it was not the tomato variety I though it was. So hoping my other tomato plant pulls through. I have treated it. But its still showing signs of blight. Sadly haven't had success with my tomato plants the last few years. There is flowers on my tomato plant. So hopefully all goes well.

Hahaha 😆. I can relate! We have boxwood that goes from around the front porch to the side porch. But like yours, they only have just a smidge of green leaves at the very tips. The rest is completely dead. From the sides, the dead is very apparent. Our "fall/winter" project is to remove them. Thinking we just might do 4-5 short pillars with urns. Perhaps even fit in a medium size statue. Just need something different. That will be easy enough to change down the road if we change our minds.

Yay - 3 David Austin’s reclaimed! Not sure about other viewers, but I’d like one of Aaron’s famous drone shots to put things in perspective. 😁

I always give my new roses three years, before I give up on them. The first few years they can be small, not as well coloured or continually ball, but give them time to settle in and show you what they are capable of.

Those roses are blessed! I love to see all the jobs you guys can get done. I'm all excited, if I can get some large pots moved to a different location! I'm getting tired just watching y'all. Yes I think the yellow roses will look great in the south garden! Calendula would also look great there.

LOVE Super Thrive! Had no idea it came in such a large size! Discovered 35 years ago when a friend dug up all her roses in her Florida garden in July and drove with them in buckets of water and super thrive all the way to Seattle. I was very skeptical. They all thrived and flourished!

We have a small pond on our property, would enjoy seeing your journey. We had a landscaping school use our yard to teach their students to create a pond so we saved on labor only paid for materials needed.

👋🌞Good Tuesday morning, Laura! 👋Hi Russell! 🐈 Or were you Cheddar? 🐈🤔 I couldn't tell from angle you were walking...🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ 🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm in for a pond feature, too, in that area!!! I KNOW that whatever you do there, it is going to be gLauraFied!!!! You and your magical touch. 🪄🪄🪄 👋Hi Aaron! What a sweet hubby you are to come get that last rose bush out. Poor Laura was struggling with that one. 😢 Hopefully, your boo boo doesn't cause you a whole lot of pain. That is a nasty place for a blister, as that part of the hand moves a LOT. 👋Hi Russell!🐈 How long did that take you 2, from start to finish, to plant those boxwoods? That was fun 🎉🎊🎉🎊 🎵🎶🎶🎵 planting music! Thank you Aaron/Ken🤗🤗 YUMMMMMM, 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓 I am soooo jealous of your strawberries, we cannot grow them here in AZ desert, during the summer; waaaaaay too hot. I am "rooting" 😉 for the 3 transplanted rose bushes!!!! I am a HUGE fan of Super Thrive! I use it on all of my house plants. Makes all of the difference. What a great, productive video today!!! Thank you for taking us along for everything!!! Have a Blessed and Beautiful day/night 🌞/🌜✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️ 🌐 everyone! Kimberley F in Avondale, Arizona USA 🇺🇸 (Zone 9b) 🌞🌵💞

You could make a small concrete, brick, gravel, or flagstone landing for the bridge over the pond to make it work with the grass and mowing that Aaron was mentioning. It might be kind of nice to do that anyway so you could flank the bridge with benches or pots 😊

We dug up KO Roses and not all came up easily to transplant. One barely had roots. Planted them and in 2 years they were huge. Tough plants. I did cut the foliage down upon transplanting so the energy goes to the roots.
