The music the choir produces IS their contribution to the community.

There is nothing comparable with the historic tradition of an English cathedral boy/men choir. I was fortunate to be a treble in one of our oldest foundations, and will never forget the amazing experience that it was from 9 -15 years old. Truro choir has been really good for a long time, and it would be a tragedy to deprive future boys in the area of the opportunity to be part of an excellent choir - after all, most boys lose their treble voice by 13 or 14, so they don't have much time in which to excel. Had I know about this at the time, I would have certainly been able to help, possibly in several ways. Perhaps the cathedral is not so good at marketing... However, it seems that they are still going, which is excellent news.

I was impressed by their recent recording of Lobo's Missa Vox Clamantis

When I went last year I could not hear the lower 3 parts over the 'girls' choir which consisted of about 20 older girls which completely drowned out everything else.

Have you heard any of their recent broadcasts? I think they would change your tone!

@@KatherineGregorySoprano How does the cathedral manage to afford a girls choir as well. I thought there were financial restrictions. and problems. Just asking.

cranmer1637 In our choir there are equal boys, girls and men so it has a unique timbre. It is better to have a good equal amount of voices rather than having too many amounts of one timbre. In my opinion choirs should be made up of at least 16 men, 10 boys and 10 girls of age 10 to 15. That’s when you really have a spark.

Firstly, it's increasingly difficult to find boys with the musical talent and dedication required, and improvements in health and nutrition mean that their voices tend to be rather raucous. Then they break, and they end up as basses. Tenors are virtually extinct. Those cathedral choirs which have gone for female top lines usually have better tonal quality and blend.

If Truro was in Germany it would not have any problem in funding the cathedral choir.Eight to ten percent of income tax which is raised locally goes to the upkeep of church choirs, the wages of full time choirmasters and clergy as well as other cultural uses outside the church. You can choose not to pay but then the church will neither baptize marry or bury you. This tax covers protestant catholic and jewish denominations. When Napoleon invaded Germany he confiscated all church lands,on Napoleons downfall it was impossible to give all this land back to the church so this tax was raised instead. This is such a fantastic nest egg for the church for the amount of money owed is so great that it can never be payed off.why cant a similar funding be raised in the UK for church choirs, but then this is a land of philistines.

And what does this church tax lead to? Churches are dependent on the state. They won’t criticize the politicians. They won’t criticize negative trends in society because they don’t want to lose their members who disagree with the teaching of their church, but who are valuable as taxpayers. Churches in Germany have become as tame as lambs. They want to follow any secular fad they see. Instead of shaping the society, they are shaped by the society. Churches in Germany are rich, but lifeless.

Separation of Church and State is condemned by the Roman Church and the only reason it worked well was because the Rulers agreed usually completely with the Holy Church and so financing the Church was practically done willfully and the Monarchy supported the condemnation by clergy of heretical, blasphemous, and lies about the faith.

By the way the Arts Council is treating the English Touring Opera Orchestra by saying they wont get any more Government funding unless the orchestra gets rid of half of the musicians and replace them with ethnic minority groups and also to play less18th and 19th cent opera i now realise Government funding of choir schools would be a disaster.
