This is an amazing film. Well done Matt. We are behind you. The Lakes are an integral feature of the British Isles. They are known worldwide. We need to preserve their integrity for the environmental benefits alone let alone for tourism.

Chris : I realised this along time ago but the public can still put pressure on them and if it effects votes they have to listen. It’s not just raw sewage it’s micro plastics too that are polluting our seas and rivers and something can be done about this. Problem also is people don’t care unless it effects them directly but it soon will effect everyone.

whilst water companies can just dump sewerage into rivers and seas with no conseqences ,then he hit it on the nail it is cheaper to do that than build enough capacity to stop this happening.

Ideally to a treatment works where the solids can be separated out through a combination of settlement and filtration processes, the PH balanced and nasty chemicals neutralised. The relatively clean water can then be safely discharged to a river or sea, the organic solids dried and either sent to landfill or used for fertaliser and the inorganic solids incinerated or sent to landfill. Gasses can also be collected during the treatment process and used to generate electricity. How's that sound?
@cal9688
@cal9688 Год назад
I'm glad the problem has absolutely nothing at all to do with the foreign, privately-owned water companies being more concerned with the bottom line than investment in water infrastructure. If I thought that the privatisation of our national drinking water could lead to problems, then I'd be very upset indeed! P.S if you see him, tell that idiot Sid

Feels a bit strange clicking "thumbs up" for this video. But, it IS a great video. Unfortunately, the central theme of the video is very much a thumbs down. Windermere is just one example of how water companies across the UK are generating huge profits by exploiting the environment. What I don't understand, is why aren't the government (and local authorities) clamping down on this? Is it really just all about money? Do the local and central governments value tax income so highly that they'll accept environmental catastrophe as an acceptable by product?
@MazzaEliLi7406
@MazzaEliLi7406 Год назад
The EU used to heavily fine the water companies for breaching existing laws. The monitoring bodies used to be accountable to government. Since Brexit the government no longer follow up on the few monitoring bodies that are still funded & they do not enforce the laws. Effectively this is what de-regulation will look like in the future - no fishing, water sports or safe beaches. Currently 83 UK Beaches are classed as unsafe. Both France & Ireland have complained that their beaches are being contaminated by UK pollution. Sigh.

I stayed at a smashing guest house in Windemere once, it was run by a respected gentleman and a retired chartered accountant. The stay was pleasant but he spent a lot of time on his phone having trouble and talking to all manner of people, a lady from the Co-op bank, a gentleman living on the Eastern seaboard of the United States, he tried to call British Telecom too but they were useless.

During the 1990's the town of Oamaru decided to spend $20 million building a waste water treatment plant. Now the people of Oamaru can visit the sea without having to dodge fatburgs, condoms, sanitary pads, and all manner of crap. Paid for by a short lived special charge on the rates bill. Best thing ever. Previously, Oamaru sewerage was held in Imhoff tanks, which allowed the solids to settle out. When the tanks were full, the valve was opened, and solids were flushed into the sea. Before the new treatment plant was completed, I had the unpleasant task of telling a family that they were sitting among condoms and tampons, as their children frolicked on the sea shore. I will never forget the look of fear and disgust on the parents face when I pointed out the fat and effluent. Oamaru has a stony beach with plenty of seaweed, all good at hiding toilet flushings. Now , the sea shore is clean when before it was filthy. Now, the shore is celebrated and host to many festivals. As it should be.

Well that's what happens when you privatize public goods where the consumer has no choice at all as the water companies in their areas are the only providers, and have a government that reveres deregulation as regulation is considered burdensome to business. As in One In Two Out and such like. Guess people get what they vote for.
