Saving Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout

Yellowstone Lake and the upper Yellowstone River once contained the largest population of Yellowstone cutthroat trout in the world. In the 1980's lake trout were introduced to Yellowstone Lake and the cutthroat population has crashed by at least 90%. This video illustrates why Yellowstone cutthroat trout are so important to Yellowstone and what is being done to try to save them.

I am glad to see that we are finally making some progress in controlling the lake trout.

Judy this is incredible footage and information. You have made me care about the issue and I really love what he says about if we can't save the intact eco-system of our first national park, then where can we do that? Such an important question. I know that you have been working hard on this for quite some time and to see it finally coming together for you is wonderful.

Dave Sweet is the one that said that. He is a volunteer with Trout Unlimited and has so far raised over $1,000,000 to suppress the lake trout. A wonderful person!

Great video, very interesting! I wish lake trout would spawn that well in the Great Lakes where they're native, as right now they're not doing to well around here in terms of spawning other than in lake superior.

I agree with you. Did you know that when fisheries biologists looked to increase the Great Lake lake trout population they came to Yellowstone? Of course that is where the Yellowstone lake trout came from.
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature 6 лет назад
Thanks! Did you know fisheries people came to Yellowstone to get some live lake trout to restock the Great Lakes a few years ago? Since the Yellowstone lake trout came from the Great Lakes they are obviously genetically right for the Great Lakes. I guess that is a silver lining to the Yellowstone lake trout problem.

well done folks, we are losing a very similar battle in Australia with some unique upland native fish predated by introduced and invasive brown and rainbow trout, so it is great to get some inspiration from others making significant progress
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature 6 лет назад
Thank you Horatio! I don't know why people think they can improve on nature by introducing fish everywhere. Even though rainbow trout are native to the U.S. they are still a big problem in some places, like Yellowstone. They are only native to a small area of California but have been introduced all over the U.S. and the world. Have you read 'An Entirely Synthetic Fish?' It is about rainbows. The title is exaggerated but it is a good read. Yellowstone hired a professional group of commercial fishermen a few years ago to catch lake trout. They will never get all of them but they have made a big dent in their numbers. Now researchers are looking at ways to kill lake trout eggs and fry on their spawning beds.

It's too bad we don't care about the "health" of our own country as much as we do these trout! I am born and raised in western Wyoming and I care about this area so I'm on board with this agenda. I just wish we could get the same for our country, haha!

What a shame to watch. I went to Yellowstone in 1996 as a 10 year old boy. We ran into a guide and he took us out for Cutthroat trout. They seemed plentiful. What a beautiful lake/park. We didn't keep them but still...
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature 7 лет назад
Because the Park Service has done such a great job of suppressing the lake trout population they are coming back. Not back to what you remember in 1996 but certainly better than a few years ago.

Yes I have. I've been there every summer since 1974 except in 1981 when we were building our house and 2007 when we were in South Africa. We will be leaving for Yellowstone this weekend and be there through October. I love Yellowstone!!

Lets see if i got this right?... Yellowstone Cutthroat trout are native to a lake where fish were not able to get to, so man planted cutthroat and now calls them Yellowstone Cutthroat?... might have to watch this again? I Guess in washington. Omak lake has "Omak Cutthroat trout" instead of Lahotan (Nevada) cutthroat? Omak lake hadn't had any type of fish in it prior to 1964... somebody help me out!... little lost now.
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature 6 лет назад
Nope. Yellowstone cutthroat trout are native to Yellowstone. Yellowstone Lake and the upper Yellowstone River contained the largest population of Yellowstone cutthroat in the world until the early 1990's when lake trout were first discovered. I didn't address Lahotan cutthroat trout here because they aren't in Yellowstone. I can tell you that all cutthroat trout are native to the U.S. They have been introduced to places where they are not native, but not in Yellowstone. Humans sometimes incorrectly think they know what is best.

Judy Lehmberg so, some of the lakes in that area had no Yellowstone Cutthroat? Can yellowstone handle high alkaline levels? Thank you for such a quick reply!
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature 6 лет назад
Like I said Yellowstone cutthroat trout are native to Yellowstone. They've been there long before humans came to what is now Yellowstone. About 40% of the waters, lakes and streams, were fishless when white men came to Yellowstone over 100 years ago. The U.S. Commission, now the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, brought everything from smallmouth bass to pike and introduced them into Yellowstone. Luckily Yellowstone was cold enough that many of those fish didn't survive. Yellowstone can handle high alkalinity. Up to a point the higher the alkalinity the more aquatic insects there are, therefore more trout.

It is interesting that some people bemoan the poor cutts which are very pretty but not a word is said about other native fishes that face problems... like the Colorado Pike Minnow or other "rough" fishes.... if a fish eats flies, is good for angling and is pretty everyone rushes to save it but let a lowly sucker become threatened and nary a word is heard. Fish bigots.
