▼About the Sawara Grand Festival Summer Festival The Sawara Grand Festival, a major event in Little Edo Sawara, is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and is known as one of the three major float festivals in the Kanto region, with a tradition dating back approximately 300 years.
In 2016, the Sawara Float Festival, which includes the float event, was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The festival floats, which are the pride of the festival, are made entirely of keyaki wood and are decorated with heavy carvings in the Kanto style, with large dolls up to 4 meters tall that were created by master puppeteers from the Edo and Meiji periods.
As the Sawara Bayashi, one of Japan's three great musical accompaniments, resonates throughout the town, the floats pass by the eaves of houses and move through the streets of Ko-Edo (a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings), creating a very tasteful sight reminiscent of the Edo period.
