Mark, what a wonderful way to start a Sunday morning. Thank you.. I bought about 30 metres of 4 inch by 1.5 inch rough sawn douglas fir yesterday. It is about 80 years old. Recovered from demolished house. Beautiful timber. I am somewhat jealous that you get to work with such beautiful timbers. Have great life
Mark that was one nice black locust log you do not see many get that big without some rot I enjoy your videos I run a band mill and I specialize in locust lumber thanks again jb
I enjoy watching your skill at sawing. Definition Dog= any of various usually simple mechanical devices for holding, gripping, or fastening that consist of a spike, bar, or hook
I'd like to see the finished stacked products. I think it would be interesting to see more close-up stuff of the goods. I can sleep to the sound of that motor. You guys make a good team even when you're sawing on the fly. I wish you guys could talk like NASCAR or NASA crews you know but without getting in the way. Just so you're safe and make it to the house.
I live in East Tennessee it’s very hard to find Black locust that size. Black Locust is a really really good tone wood for acoustic guitars. It’s just really hard to find it big enough. Awesome sawmill I love your channel.
Your welcome! I know a very well known luthier one of the best in the country and he said he’d rather use black locust than Brazilian if he were to build a guitar for hisself. He has an incredible stock of Brazilian too lol. If you cut off a small piece tap on it you can hear it ring like a bell
Looks and sounds like a new blade? I remember the "Hedgeapple" trees on my grandparents farm in Ohio. I always thought it was beautiful wood, but grandpa cut it all for firewood. Snap, crackle, pop!
Down south there is a Water Locust - Gleditsia aquatica that appears so much to be a Honey Locust - Gleditsia triacanthos. It grows in wet damp areas hence its name. The immature Honey Locust is easy to ID in that the leaves are different (Simple compound) than when they mature but the adult leaves of both look the same (double Compound). The bark is different between the two. Black Locust - Robinia pseudoacacia is in another tribe entirely. Yes, they have thorns too.
What do dogs do ? They debark . LOL Do honey locust have the flowers and black don't or are they male female ? I was near some flowering locust boy did they ever smell nice . My brother said you could put a locust post in the ground and it would last for ever and not rot off . they dug a black walnut squared timber out of the river bank that was over 100 years old . People talk about gum trees in the United States ,I never heard that in Canada . What tree are they referring to. You say popular where we have popular that beavers cut down and the big log cousIns we call cotton wood . Ours has cotton silk with the seeds in the spring . I cut a Catolpa log 30" and had it sawn into boards oily and full of water and smells terrible when cut into even after dry and really soft ,you can dent it with your nail . Thanks and keep sawing .
About the "dogs". Woodworkers have bench "dogs" that don't bite. If you made the contact point wider with smaller pins you could call them "cats". Might cause a sensation.
I enjoy random videos sawing random logs. Our dairy barn is rock elm truss with mostly tamarack rafters. Is tamarack a hard wood to saw?? I ask because I have a heck of a time trying to pound nails into tamarack.
Another name for tamarack is larch depending where you live in North America people call it different thing once it’s dry it’s very hard to pound nails into
I knew a guy who had some good sized black locust on his land. He planned to use it for a fence around a horse pasture. He was going to take it a local mill to get square posts and fence boards cut. Unfortunately, he waited 2 to 3 years before hauling it to the mill. The sawmill was comparable to John’s bigger outfit. The old sawmill guy completed the work but told the customer if he had any more to get sawn, he was more than welcome to take it somewhere else! It was very difficult to saw and took a long time due to hot blade issues. 🥸👍✅
