We have an abundance of sweet gum in upstate SC. I mainly saw them for dunnage and pallet wood. One customer builds cradles for over seas shipping pallets. Very easy log to saw. Keep up the great work.

Hey Tyler, hey Brit, Always enjoy the vids. As a cabinet maker in Melbourne, Australia we use a lot of spotted gum for flooring, kitchen bench tops and sometimes furniture style items. Keep the awesome vids coming. Someone once said to me, "this is not wood, it's timber" wood is for burning. Timber is beautiful.

On the Mississippi coast we (grandparents) used bla kgum for handles on farm tools and even saw them used for runners on sleds. The main use for sweetgums was furniture and flooring. My grandfather said hollow sweetgums were used for beehives. Have fun and stay safe!

Here in Missouri we have the Sweet gum that grows. And the Sweet gum is used for Veneer, Plywood, Cabinet's, some Medicines, Salves, and used in Adhesive, and chewing gum and different types of Furniture. And I'm sure that all other species of Gum trees is used for Veneer, Plywood, Cabinets, and other Furniture.

Theyll have to take time to read comment replies to find this.. and even then, i hate to spoil folks potential for carving out their own life experiences by just giving all the answers that NO ONE will ever reveal.. but here.. try taking 6 blocks of it and placing them in various "natural" resting places then collect, dry and slice. Sweetgum actually lends itself very well to colorization after critter attack. Now.. spend 8 years figuring out what spores did the work best.. what length of straws they can get through, acceptable end loss for benefit of deeper penetration.. and how long to "cook" em. Besides that, something that is "not valuable" is never used.. so when its used, its rare and valuable. The black center of a 70 year old sweetgum.. um dont burn that.
@TimothyTate-tc5yk
@TimothyTate-tc5yk 5 месяцев назад
@@ClutteredMind-yt4gg I'm not interested in your reply. I'm not interested in what critters do with the sweet gum. However chewing gum is not made from sweet gum tree more, and sweet gum is no longer harvested here in Missouri. People here in Missouri just plants the sweet gum in their yards for ornamental tree. The main harvesting of wood here in Missouri oak, black walnut, hickory, and wild black cherry, ash, Birch, sycamore, white Elm and Red Elm. And what is known here in Missouri as being the juniper cedar.

The Difference Between Hardwood and Softwood in general, hardwood comes from deciduous trees which lose their leaves annually. Softwood comes from conifers, which usually remain evergreen. The trees from which hardwood is obtained tend to be slower growing, meaning the wood is usually denser

We are very limited to different species of timber here in central alaska. Our cottonwood is similar to your gum, it is just a pain to saw, cups, twists, solid water yet seems to start the rotting process as soon as you saw it. Can't put it in sunlight or it will pull any fastener right out of the stuff its attached to. Soft and punky feeling while sawing yet in a weeks time, have to drill a nail hole. Oddly when dried out, makes a great bread board or some kind of decorative wood as it will take any kind of finish. No good for firewood, just a junk tree that where ever there is water on the land, there is cottonwood trees. Standing, they look so nice and just crazy how much it changes from standing to cut down.

They are easy on saws like poplar and surprisingly Hickory. White oak is the most popular wood around here that's hard on saws. 2nd, red oak. I've been in the sawmill industry for 15 years as a saw restorer and on the front lines at Edwards wood products. I worked as a saw filer there. Big wide double cut band saws they used in their main sawmill. You should look into a double cut but I don't know if they make one for a small sawmill.

I just made a comment about sweet gum lumber on another one of your videos minutes ago. LOL I have build horse barns with it and poplar . I think you are right about the width of 6" boards. I remember building horse barns and cow barns with my Dad, brother and I when we were just kids. My Dad would use a Homelite XL12 chainsaw to do all the cutting for the build. I am glad to find the channel and it has brought back treasured memories...

I take a 6" - 7" sweetgum log, brace it on the mill so that I can get an angled cut, cut them 5/4" then let them dry for 6 months. Then plane them down to about 3/4" (because of cupping). Once finished they make beautiful wood that I use my laser on to make awesome signs. This Spring I want to try making siding from sweetgum, I have a bathhouse on the property that I want to use it on.

The only good use that I now of is lath for a tin roof on a barn or shed. Back in the day when we used nails for tin gum would hold to the nails a lot better than any other wood and it was low acid so it would not rust the nails . Growing up dad would cut a small sweet gum to saw the lath for a barn or shed bill.

Are we talking sweetgum or black gum? That barks looks like sweet but sometimes bark can fool us on a small phone screen. Sweetgum rots so quickly I can’t understand why the tie industry would use them but they do. You know when you buy or look at used crossties and some of them look great and some of them are rotted and soft???? There you go…those rotted ones are the trash logs that were thrown in there like sweetgum! Black gum are much better for ties. Stay warm Brittany!
