I'm sharing my honest review of my SawStop 3hp Professional Table Saw after one year. Having used this saw pretty heavily over the past year, there are things I absolutely love about this saw, as well as a few things I don't.

Katie--thanks for the review. I'll be getting a slider for my saw once I use up an excess of lumber. Have you ever thought of using a pushbutton clevis pin to keep the slider from moving out of the rear position? It seems as though it should be an easy thing to drill a hole in the slider frame, into which the pin could be inserted. Some pins even come with a lanyard; using that would keep it from getting lost.

i sold my beloved Unisaw and was prepared to purchase the Industrial saw with 5hp which is a fantastic saw, but after much consideration, i realized that i never bogged any of my Unisaws with 3hp and a sharp blade, so at the last minute i purchased the PCS with 3hp and the 52" fence and i do not regret it at all. it is a great saw with plenty of power and the customer service at Saw Stop is first class...thanks for sharing and i am happy to see that you are teaching your kids to use the saw in as safe manor!

@@addicted2diy I own them both and there is a huge difference between the 5hp and the 3hp, I use my 3hp as a dado station, they are placed back to back with a 3' out feed table between them; one only realize how valuable 5hp or higher is when have to cut thru thick hickory material or any other hardwood that you want in thick material; I love them both, I don't see the use of the slider, I owned before the real slider saws, as you mentioned in your video, only good for large material rip, that's all, other than that, the slider is in the way all the time. Nice description of your saw, have fun with it. Dan

@@PAPSROYALAPIARY With 3hp I resaw 5/4 Ipe 1x6 decking with the blade full up buried in the edge of the board. No issue with a lack of power. Ipe is considerably harder than hickory. On the Janka hardness scale hickory has a hardness score of 1820, not quite 50% harder than White Oak. Ipe's hardness scale is 3680, double hickory's hardness, and almost triple white oak's hardness. One advantage I do have is I do have 10 gauge wiring from the 30amp breaker to the saw including the saw cable. Voltage drop is nonexistent. Not saying that you have voltage issues but I do not hear or detect any slow down when cutting 3" deep in Ipe. This was true with my Jet 3 hp cabinet saw and my ICS 3 hp SS.

Having tons of table saw experience including huge sliders and also having taken off three fingers I purchased a 1p 3 hp SawStop years ago and love that I don’t have to worry so much about my kid and employees using it …. My only issue with it is that it isn’t powerful enough and it will bog when cutting maple hardwood…. So as we are about to move into a new facility and take our business to the next level i plan to purchase the 3P 7.5 HP and dedicate my older one to dado saw …. Overall a very nice saw !

Great 1 year review thanks for posting. I have same model that is about 3 years old. Can't beat the safety aspect. I did have one cartridge "soft blow" not sure what I did wrong but it was when I was adjusting for a miter cut. the saw was not running but the power was on. weird but the good thing is it did not damage my blade at all. I replaced the cartridge and just went on with my project. Still don't know what caused it and it has not done it since. I do power saw down completely now when changing to a miter cut, then re=power on.

If that is really the case, you had a cartridge go off for no reason, you should have sent it back in to the company! They will gladly download the memory and quite possibly figure out why it activated. Plus, they will probably send you a new cartridge.

Thanks for the glowing review of your saw. I bought a similar saw last fall and really appreciate the power this saw delivers compared to my previous machine. However a major downturn in my opinion evolved when the safety feature triggered…no injuries but the triggering occurred when I was cutting some plywood which apparently contained some water in one of the layers….the wood had been outside. I had previously been cutting some very green fence boards and had no problem. My soured opinion set in when I had to remove the destroyed brake module and blade, what a nightmare. I don’t think the design could be any worse. Because the saw was new, Sawstop did give me a one time courtesy replacements which I did appreciate. However I’m now faced with the dilemma of buying a brake cartridge for my dado blade and the annoyances of having to change it back and forth as the different operations are used….not impressed. My 1st choice was a Laguna fusion 111 but it just wasn’t available because of the messed up supply chain. When things return to normal my Sawstop may be up for sale.
@addicted2diy
@addicted2diy 2 года назад
That's such a bummer that you aren't liking your saw. I haven't yet had my brake triggered, which I'm grateful for. I am actually really surprised that it happened with plywood. I've never known plywood to have moisture in it. I'm glad everything was okay and no injuries were sustained!
@siriosstar4789
@siriosstar4789 Год назад
Those aren't valid reasons for selling your SS and buying a Laguna which has the worst reported customer service in the industry . plus the laguna is trash compared to the quality of the saw stop . Triggering the stop mechanism with a wet piece of plywood is a rare event and buying a stop mechanism for your dado is simply unnecessary .Just be extra alert when using your dado some and you will be fine . The laguna is basically the same saw as a grizzly , jet , harvey etc but without customer service . Don't do it .
@charliegriffiths8312
@charliegriffiths8312 Год назад
@@siriosstar4789 Thanks for the response. Yes, I’m one year into my SS experience and I’ve only had one more brake activation….this one was totally my fault so the replacement blade and brake unit were on me. I have become super cautious when using the saw, more so than any other saw I’ve owned. I take note about the Laguna support comment, I do own other Laguna stuff and any time I’ve needed help they always seem to be helpful. However, I do like your suggestion about the lack of necessity for the brake unit for a dado operation….that hadn’t even crossed my mind. Unfortunately since my last post I have bought the brake unit but may never use it….I really hate the idea of destroying an expensive set of dado blades. Thanks for your positive comments.

I am glad you did this review. I had already purchased my saw and inline router table prior but I really wanted to see the sliding table in action. The thing that is discouraging me so far is having to remove it when you want to rip a large sheet then having to square it up again. Have you run into this?
@addicted2diy
@addicted2diy 3 года назад
I actually have and forgot to mention that in my review. It has only been in the past couple of weeks that I have ever run into this as an issue, which is probably why I forgot to mention it🤦🏼‍♀️ What I have done, rather than removing the fence on the sled, is use my track saw (I have a Keegan Adaptive Cutting System) and rip the wider sheer goods down with that. That being said, it is not hard to square the fence back up when reassembling it. It’s really been out of utter laziness that I just haven’t removed it to make those cuts😂 That being said, it’s probably the same amount of work to set up my track saw as it would be to remove the fence.

We have a Sawstop at my local Menzshed. I've come close to setting off the safety system one time when my fingers brushed against the blade just before it stopped spinning. I find it to be a great saw. I think the only gripes I've personally found with it are: 1. If you set the fence very close to the blade (around 3 mm), the red warning light flashes to say it's conducting electricity. 2. The thing the castors are set in to has a large gap between it and the saw's cabinet that gap fills up with sawdust and junk quite quickly. 3. The internal tube that takes the sawdust away has a spiral rib along it that easily blocks up with sawdust and small slivers of wood.
@addicted2diy
@addicted2diy 2 года назад
I’ve never set the fence that close to have that happen, but one thing you can do to alleviate that is make a sacrificial fence that sits over the top of the actual fence. Then you’re able to get extremely close and the blade will only cut the plywood on the sacrificial fence.
@stuboyd1194
@stuboyd1194 2 года назад
@@addicted2diy Yeah that would be a workaround. Would you mind setting the fence on your own saw about 3 mm or 1/8" away from the blade and see if yours also flashes the red light? Thanks.

A work around for locking that sliding table in the rear position would be to simply get a mag switch and put in its track and lock that way. But curious if you can pull that off entirely like a drawer and put aside. I'm looking at getting one for my 11yr old professional sawstop too and have a narrower shop to walk around it when not in use. I can clearly see it would pay dividends on breaking down full sheet goods. Saving time and more importantly, tear out when using a circle saw and straight edge on the floor. Plus you take advantage of the built-in dust collection on the table saw.
@addicted2diy
@addicted2diy 2 года назад
That’s a really good theory on the mag switch and one I haven’t entertained. I am definitely going to look into that! The sled itself does not come off like a drawer slide. The fence can be removed by loosening the screws on the fence and taking it off. It’s not a hard thing to do, but 9/10 times it’s really not in my way for most cuts. There have only been a few where it’s needed to be removed.

Katie, may I suggest a possible solution to the balance issue with the sliding crosscut sled. I have a Sawstop 32", 3hp PCS with an ICS mobile base and it is all cast iron with a router table installed. It is a bit tipsy on the other end of mine, but I counter it by being sure my fence is always on the far-left or opposite end along with anything else that maybe on it when I move it. It looks like you might be able to take advantage of the fence weight as well, just run it down to the far end next time to see if it helps. If not, it might be a good reason/excuse to get a router table installed on it 😁. Thanks for the review!
@11211lcb
@11211lcb 3 года назад
You would probably be happier with the Pro base rather than the industrial. The industrial base is way larger than the Pro saw base. The ICS Saw fills the industrial base completely and has no tipping issues. Then again the extra weight of the ICS may contribute to the stability when moving. The ICS right extension wing legs do not even have to be adjusted to the floor. Mine remain about 1/2" up from the floor at all times during use.
@toolchuck
@toolchuck 3 года назад
@Leon Bridges For me the PCS base was too limiting, I could not have gotten the cast iron router table and the cast iron filler wing between the router table and the right saw wing with the PCS base. Sawstop say’s it won’t lift it. I’m not so sure it’s the weight as it is the tipping. The wheels on the ICS base stick out, especially the right rear wheel, it’s offset to the right a couple of inches more, which supports the weight on the right side of the saw from tipping. But this does require you to attach two straps from the saw base to the ICS base on the lower left side which secure the saw to the base which stops it from tipping to the right. I also just talked to a person that was at Rockler and he was about to buy a cast iron router table to add to his 36” Sawstop with a PCS base. He damn near cried when I told him that he would need to upgrade his base. It’s not just the cost, but it’s a major undertaking for most people move those saws. I’m happy with my saw and base, I’m sure you are too, I mean we got Sawstops right? 😎

@@11211lcb The Industrial base rotates on all four wheels, the Pro only two, so it has to be steered. That's the biggest reason people will chose the Industrial over Pro, it's much easier to maneuver in smaller spaces.

Your sled problem is not that is doesn't lock when full at the back. In fact, I find doing this dangerous, preventing your to step away in case of any problem (kickback ?) Your problem is the fact that every time your remove the fence to get some room then put it back on, you have to re-tune the squareness. Because it's a pain, you just leave it on. Problem is that there's no way to lock the 90 degree in a reproducible way. Some people worked on a solution (don't remember where but I can search for it) that is, as far as I remember, is not that hard to build. Still, I havn't done it myself... Even with this problem I do love the sled. This sled is not made by SawStop, I have the same (color and fence look is different) that I bought OEM and installed on my Delta table saw, which I also love and wouldn't exchange for a sawstop. One thing better the Delta have is more room in front of the blade, so it's easier to set the piece of wood, to get is square, before starting the cut :) Finally you're totally right for the industrial base, which I love and copied. I build my own version for my Delta saw. I even think mine is sturdier and allows easy movement of the whole setup ! Thanks for your review, usually people make review when buying but never again. Its even more important to know how it's going and if the product stands after a year or two of use. THANKS

Look up chips fly. They have a ditigtal measuring device that fits the Sawstop table saw. It just screws on using the screws that hold on measuring glass. This is handy becuse if you change the blade you can zero it out so you'll never cut short or long using a differnt blade like a normal or thin kerf blade When you put your tape on the fence rail you set it for the stock blade. But if you use a differnt blade that might not be accurate anymore without recalibration. Now ive been told this won't fit my Jet Table saw but I plan on trying it anyway But I'd like to know what size the fence rail is from the table to the operator side I've been told this won't fit my Jet but both machines have a besymery style fence system most larger saws do.

Also, keep the kids away from the saw.

I know, I should really stop pretending and get back to doing the dishes🤣🤣 I can’t speak to Laguna or Powermatic as I’ve never used those saws, but I know a lot of people who do and love them. Obviously there will never be any excuse to not use a tool safely, but accidents happen to the best of us. Sometimes from distractions. Sometimes fatigue. Having that extra layer of safety on this saw is what sold me on it. I often work alone, plus I also have teenage sons who sometimes use this. But for the same price and presumed quality, I like this saw the most.

Agreed. SawStop is a great saw but there are a ton of folks that cannot shell out the kind of coin required to get one. However, that is all about to change unless I have missed something recently in the news regarding SawStop. The patent runs out this year (August I believe) on their stopping mechanism and there is a possibility that it or parts of the patent will be extended but there is no guarantee either way. At one (1) minute past midnight following the date of expiration of the patent, nearly every single saw manufacturer will have an offering that will be ready to sell online at that very second or you'll be able to either pick one up at your big box store or order from somewhere. Right now if I were planning to purchase a SawStop I'd wait until this issue is settled because of the possibility of saving huge amounts of money, even a possible price reduction from SawStop themselves.
@jac_builtWoodworks
@jac_builtWoodworks 3 года назад
I don't really understand this though. I mean Saw Stop are the ones to be clever enough to come up with the technology so they should be the only ones to be able to implement it. Surely they can "own" the patent forever. I can't really see Festool giving up the design of the Domino and letting other companies implement it so why should Saw Stop give their's up. The cost of their saw isn't much different of cost to a Powermatic saw, and Powermatic don't have the technology. If Saw Stop had a crap saw and just the technology then I would say yeah too much money but they are pretty solid machines as well. Cost is a lot cheaper in the U.S then here in Australia, for a Saw Stop 3HP PCS 36" it's just over $5,000AUD which equals around $3800USD. No additional extra's included. Not sure what you guys pay in the states.
@ronwilliams329
@ronwilliams329 3 года назад
@@jac_builtWoodworks Patents do expire though and it’s a good thing. It brings prices down and let’s others into the game and it also drives further innovation. I think the basic sawstop here in the states is 1850 for a contractor type saw and 3500 plus for their cabinet saw then add in thousands for the accessories most folks would like to have. SawStop is a quality saw but I’d not say it’s the very best money can buy though. They will continue to produce saws regardless of the patent expiration but the auto brake function is the issue. After the expiration I do expect to see significant savings on the cost of their saws though.

@ronwilliams329
@ronwilliams329 3 года назад
@@jac_builtWoodworks Better than SawStop? Felder for sure! Their slider is better as well. Dream machine. But when choosing a table saw available space is a big consideration for most folks. A complete Felder or SawStop setup is a dream for most folks and not practical for average Joes working out of a small garage or shop. You mentioned Powermatic and that is a fine cabinet saw as well. Laguna is another. I also like Grizzly (not saying it's better than SawStop) even though you often have to fine tune them when they arrive. Knowledge on how to find tune table saws, miter saws and joiners is a premium that pay serious dividends. There are a lot of folks now days that are ditching table saws due to track saws. Neighbor across the street is a weekend woodworking warrior and a very serious one at that, and told me he rarely uses his table saw anymore and I know others that have said the same. Actually to me, the best saw is the one I can rely on to cut strait and has power. Easy to fine tune to get the absolute straightest cut. That being said, my Grizzly ain't failing me in the least bit and I have no plans on retiring it! Probably my last saw.

You're doing it incorrectly. Use the sliding crosscut sled to move your material through the saw. NOT your hands. They didn't put a locking position on the sled's +Y axis travel limit because You're NOT supposed to be standing in front of it. What you're doing when you're standing in front of the sled is creating a safety violation. Anyone could walk up behind you and accidentally put pressure on the sled, thus forcing you to move forward. You could trip when something like that was to happen. Imagine tripping forward towards the saw's top surface and that unforgiving blade spinning fast enough to put a dollar bill slot in your forehead and brains. 👨‍🎤⚙🩸🩸🩸🩹🩹🩹🚑🏥

This isn't a Review it's a brag that you got a saw, with way too many upgrades and bonuses then you really need. 52" capacity that is more than your space allows, no out feed table, and a slider that isn't even necessary unless you are doing large work or cabinetry work professionally. Mobile base add on that moved it about 3" in a direction that didn't change anything for your workability

Lonnie, I don’t disagree with you on the character (or lack there of) of the designer and original owner of Sawstop, but sometimes you must dance with the devil, so you don’t cut your nose off to spite your face. You may argue if other saws are equal to Sawstop in quality, but it would be hard to make the case that any are better, and this is without considering the safety feature of the Sawstop. But just so you and others know, “June 26, 2017: SawStop today announced the acquisition of SawStop, LLC by TTS Tooltechnic Systems, a third-generation family-owned company based in Wendlingen, Germany. The TTS family of companies includes Festool, Tanos, Cleantec and others”.
