I’m 79 years old and I am just now finding time to learn a musical instrument. I chose the alto sax as I really like the sound of a sax. My beginner sax is shipped and I should receive it today. I love your videos. Wish me luck.
Hey great to hear that Arnold! Have fun with your new sax and checkout the lessons we have to help you get started quickly inside Sax School : saxschoolonline.com
I’ve recently was gifted a sax. After 10 years after I lost my mom today was first time I picked it up. I am now drug and alcohol free for a week. Once I picked it up I felt something spark. I’m learning the basics all over but I know this is more than a sax this is my outlet. Thank you for the video.
This is odd because i wasn't able to sleep and it's 5:34 am. I miss my mom so much, lost her 3yrs ago and strangely tonight i was listening to Kenny G nd i though wow it would be nice to be able to play Sax because its soothing. Condolences to you and we will be ok, time heal's. I beed to save up for a saxophone 🎷
@@sibongileperish8515 yeah grieving comes in waves this just helps me when it gets tough. Kenny g ! One of the well known sax players ever. Keep going and keep striving , also save up and get yourself one. It’ll be well worth it.
My late father set up his stereo speakers on either side of my crib. Dad played a lot of John Coltrane, Miles Davis and The Dave Brubeck Quartet. So, Paul Desmond with his horn solo on Take Five has always been my inspiration. Thank you, Dad for the coolest exposure that a father could present to his son. R.I.P. Dad!
I've never really been into jazz or band, more of an orchestra type person, myself. But my grandpa left me his saxophone, and after sitting in my closet for years, it started calling to me recently. I'm starting my saxophone journey today! Thanks for the great videos!
I’m a flute player from my school, and I just love the sounds of tenor saxophones. I wanted to try out a new instrument as well as playing gorgeous songs in the saxophone. Its what inspired me to play the saxophone!
Saxophone player here for about 19 years now. Started when I was 11. It may be a little frustrating for some at first but that's normal! I first started off in middle school, and it was frustrating for me, but I kept at it and improved. And the more I played it the more I understood the instrument and it was making more sense. As with any instrument, practice always makes perfect. Don't be discouraged one bit if you're stuck on playing a note, or getting the fingerings right. Take it one step at a time and move on to the next one. Before you know it you'll be capturing the ladies at the club. lol
I'm 70 years old and I received a sax for Christmas and I've never played an musical instrument. Very motivated because I've always wanted to play and now I've got the time. Your lessons have been very informative as well as enjoyable Thanks .
Do it you old codger...I'm gonna go rent an alto sax and I'm 70 too Haven't played an instrument since 7th grade....tuba ,then trombone.Let me know how you are doing.
I took up the sax because after 50 years of playing the drums I was fed up with lugging it around ! Simple as that really lol can’t wait to get to my first gig with just a sax sounds like bliss 🤣
@@Caillouteletub123 hmmm, well I've never played the flute, but I do know that the way you have to blow is wayy different. I've heard the flute is harder. I learned the saxophone pretty quick. I hope this helps!
It was my host father took care of me when I was studying in Australia. He was a pro Tenor Sax player and inspired me a lot. He took me to his gigs and he showed me a new world. Also my favorite sax player is Mark Riviera. Absolute class.
My beautiful grandad passed away last year. He had such a passion for jazz and we would spend hours listwning to his vinyl collection, I'm learning because he know he can hear me and would be so proud ☺️
Dean Ivanhoe Fraser the Jamaican saxophonist and the maestro of reggae. What inspired me most was the flat bridge album, It is a master piece. The sound of Dean’s sax on a track elevates it to another level. I'm just getting started!!
Honestly I can't name a piece that I inspired me more than Just the two of us by Gover Washington Jr. Everything about this tune is great and the sax solo as iconic as it gets.
This might sound weird, but what inspired me was a middle school band concert. At the time I was in middle school and I had gone to see some friends perform, and at that time I had to interest in music. However, after the concert I was just inspired, and I went straight home and told my mom that I wanted to play the saxophone. This video was very helpful, so thank you for making it, your a great teacher!
ik ben 72 jaar en heb een alt sax gekocht. probeer nu via deze video sax te spelen. Ik ben door Candy Dulver verslaafd geraakt aan deze sound, ik vind jou video geweldig . dank je wel
i just have loved saxophone tunes and songs, i am in band class and i started with the drums but didnt feel right so i decided to try the sax and my god i learned how to make a sound quick!
I play the saxophone too! ^^ I’m learning how to play it in band right now actually! Im in the beginning of band tho I just joined and it’s really fun ^^
This is very exciting to me! I bought a Tenor Sax simply because I love the way it sounds. I taught dancing for years and always had an appreciation for the music. To start playing a sax is a real joy and the lessons make total sense! Thanks a bunch!!!
So excited, I just bought an Alto Saxophone for my boyfriend for Christmas, and getting him 4 lessons on a gift Certificate... plus now I ran into your videos.. I'm so happy I did.. I will forward and share your videos once Christmas has passed . He is 68 years old and he Always wanted to play since he was in Junior High.. He is ready to retire soon and sell his business of 29 years... I am hoping he will love this great surprise and gift.. He is a cancer servivor and is still under treatment now. I HOPE THIS WILL BRING HIM SOME HOPE TO KEEP GOING ON... THANK YOU.. LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING HIM GROW AND LEARN..
Wonderful to hear your boyfriend is getting started. We have loads to help him inside Sax School - be sure to get him to take our 14 day trial to help him get up and running saxschoolonline.com
I love the sound of the saxophone, it tickles my spine and brain nicely. In gr. 7 I chose to take band and when my teacher said if you want to play saxophone in gr. 8 you needed to play the clarinet or flute and then take lessons over the summer break. I was so excited about that so I played the flute. My step dad wouldn't pay for lessons over summer so I never got to play. I'm now almost 28 and trying to find a cheap saxophone so I can live my dream 🤍 thank you for your channel 🤍
After I posted this I heard the monsters Inc. Theme song and it hit me. That's when I fell in love with the saxophone, I was OBSESSED up with monsters Inc when I was a kid and now it all makes sense
I'm 64 and just started on Sax. I chose a Tenor because I love that sound. Ordered my Tenor last Tuesday, and it arrived on Thursday( the next week) and I'm stoked! Got it put together, all the parts are there. It has a black nickel finish and it's heavy! I am in Love!!!!!
I was inspired by some local players,by Dexter Gordon's sound,by Lisa Simpson, albeit she plays Baritone, but mainly inspired by the history and Majesty of this instrument. Why did I waste my elementary school band classes playing Trumpet and Cornet??? I should have been a Sax man all along!!!! Oh well,64 is a good time to start on my next journey!!!
Just finished the first lesson and it got me so excited. I bought the saxophone 3 years back and never got to practice until now. Today was my first lesson and I must say I am enjoying your video. Thank you so much. All the way from South Africa 🇿🇦
Awesome! Have fun with your sax and glad this video helped. The most important thing at the start is playing music YOU like. Have you made a start with our 14 day free trial yet? SaxSchoolonline.com/join-today
I've all ways been fascinated with the sax and i also love the way it sounds and i had my great grandpas beautiful alpha sax in our storage so we got it out and started playing it
i'm primarily a guitar player, and about a year ago i went to see a tash sultana concert. about halfway through the set, they pulled out a saxophone and i was utterly entranced. i always had a passing intrest in the saxophone, and had considered picking it up, but i just never got around to it. a little while ago, i remembered that i had my grandma's highschool band sax in a closet, and i've spent the last couple weeks getting it back into playing shape. we'll see how it goes, but i'm pretty excited
The first time I saw the Saxophone was on a TV show called Shanana, Big Lenny played the instrument, just loved it , this was way back in the 70's, got my as a 40th birthday gift, started to learn, lost interest and took it up again 15 years later. So i start from scratch.
My introduction to sax began in the 60s in 4th grade from a storybook; Melindy's Medal. I had no idea of what it was, what it looked like, or what it sounded like. During the following school year, our first music teacher arrived, and he showed a film that showed all of the music instruments and a sample of what they sounded like. Once I heard the sound of that alto sax, I was hooked! By the time I was in 6th grade , the new music teacher, who was also a band leader, established the first marching band for that elementary school. Guess who was first to sign up and for which instrument?😂..I played all the way through high school, along with Basson for concert band. I'm now 63 and looking forward to picking up where I left off. Thanks so much for your help .. 🎶🎷
I’m 41 and I just listen to “when you’re smiling “ Louie Armstrong, I immediately looked for a learning video and now I need to find a sax. Long journey but I’m inspired to learn! Great video!
First song that inspired me to play sax - #41 by Dave Mathews Band. The solo LeRoi Moore plays on the outro was one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. Then that opened up the whole world of jazz to me and Getz, Coltrane and Bird and all the amazing players Miles would feature
10:16 saw a tiktok of a guy putting a sax solo in sparks by coldplay and the comments from people describing what it made them think of made me remember just how music can touch each person. and because of that, i need to learn this instrument.
At 55 years old I’ve always kicked myself for not learning an instrument so how’s my chance! Love the sound of a saxophone, inspired by late 70s/early 80s ska and 2-tone like Madness plus, of course, George Michael’s Careless Whisper. These intros to learning will invaluable, thanks
I played alto and baritone sax in highschool. This was almost 19 years ago. I just went to a show for a band called Moon Hooch and the bass saxophone player inspired me to play again! I am so jazzed about playing Micheal Wilburs music, I love the sound and I just want to play again. I'm going to start playing in a reggae/ska band so I want to learn the saxophone again and really get myself in the sax mindset again. Thank you for your videos, they are wonderful in helping me relearn the alto sax!
Watching INXS at Wembley Stadium hearing Never Tear Us Apart got me to pick up a sax and do more than sing. I played clarinet for four years in school and I'm hoping to start an INXS tribute band sooner than later.
I got motivated by a gentleman playing Christmas tunes in front of my local Target, for me it was love at first sight with the saxophone the tunes that come out of it are awesome
Great to hear that. What do you think of these Christmas songs: 10 Easy Christmas Songs for Saxophone ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nlsR8wKoisg.html
I don't even own a sax, but am considering getting into it someday. Billy Joel's music is definitely my biggest inspiration for wanting to learn the sax. More specifically, his song 'New York State of Mind' is an all time favorite and primary inspiration.
I just love the way the sax sounds and i have always wanted to learn to play it since juniour high. I am in my mid 30s now, it seems now is the best time for me.
Great video mate. Thanks for taking the time to teach others by making the videos. I have always wanted to play sax but never been able to afford one 14years later got one yah.... Pink floyd money,
I am 75 years old, purchased my Tenor sax about 8 years ago but never started to learn playing (I know - BAD!!!). Now I am starting, had my firsts lesson and hope to stick with it. So far - love the lesson and hope to se more lessons here
I'm a guitar player and I've started to absolutely love jazz, but I unfortunately I don't like a lot of jazz guitar playing... I haven't gotten one yet, but Wayne Shorter is my favorite player and I'd love to learn some his work down the road. The Speak No Evil album is incredible.
I played alto sax in band in middle school for two years, but my original instrument pick was drums. I taught myself how to play drums at age 5 and was already playing in church by the time I was in middle school. I picked drums, but my band teacher didn’t want female drummers so she lied and said all of her percussion spots were filled and I had to pick another instrument. I chose alto sax because my older brother played alto sax. Eventually I got a new band teacher and he allowed me to transition from alto sax to percussion. I’ve also played baritone sax. I’m just relearning some things now in remembrance of my brother. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I'm also a drummer! My Sax is arriving in a few days, can't wait to branch out. Couldn't stick with guitar or piano but I'm feeling confident about Sax.
My husband has been talking about wanting to play saxophone for quite a while now. His motivation was the sexy sax man tunes. But he also said he's always wanted to learn an instrument at some point. I surprised him for his birthday and got him a rental alto sax! I played clarinet for 9 years, from fifth grade through the beginning of college. It would be much smoother for me to teach him on a tenor but we have an alto for now. He's never played an instrument or read music before. Wish us luck!
I’m a brass player who plays trombone and Euphonium, I’m really good friends with all the saxophones in my High School, and it looks like such a fun instrument to play. I also wanted to get a taste of what it’s like being a woodwind musician, and I think it’d be awesome if I could play on both sides of the musical spectrum. 🎺🎷
I have been playing the bass for a few years now and I really like jazz and groovy music. After seeing some of my favourite bass players also playing saxo and listening to Watermelon man’s saxo I have decided to try this new instrument. Your videos are beeing REALLY helpful
I accidentally watched your lesson which wasn't on my mind and kept watching it to the end. I really liked it and you convinced me to by alto saxophone 🎷 and much appreciated for you giving this opportunity to learn someone doesn't have a clue like me, I hope I have to keep following up your tutorial.
35 here , having my first sax / instrument custom made right now. ( going with a tenor sax ) I love the range and the deep-ness of the tenor over the alto. For me ive always wanted to learn to play the sax since i was around 10-12 yrs old. but i grew up poor. now that i have the time and money i am finally give this a go ! I am finding it hard to find decent information on how to get started though. ( what lessons to do first / what keys are what / etc ) not a lot of videos really diving into this topic. most YT videos are "intro" videos then they just try and sell you a "program". with having ZERO musical background. I hope this wont be too difficult to pick-up. ( not trying to perform live or in a band ( just wanna play for myself and do my own covers of songs ). thanks for the video !
this is great I learned to play when I was 14, but haven't really played in 25 years - My brother paid to repair my sax (some pads & buttons had fallen off) for my birthday so now I'm ready to try again! A refresher is what I'm looking for since I remember the basic scales but would love to start playing ska & swing! I clicked on the link but it says the site can't be reached - is the toolkit still available to download?
For a novice, I really enjoyed this video. I listened to 'One Step Beyond' & 'The Prince'. Ska all the way! I know it's not easy but I just wanted an insight. No faff. Straight to the point.
Started leaning in October, I love it even though it is a challenge. My two songs that made me want to play are also goals to achieve. First song is Love, Joy and Passion by Euge Groove. I love this song it is such a great example of the skill required and one day I will be able to play this. (2 year target) second song is Michael Lington’s Silent Night from the smooth Soul Holiday album. My target is to be able to play this by Christmas 2022. Wish me luck 🍀
Baker street! most definitely. My son started playing and I've always loved the Sax, I'm 51 now and so want to join him. got my Sax today so looking forward to starting. keep you posted!
I play the trumpet since 1⁹77. My bucket list is to learn as many instruments as I can. Thank you sir. Sax and French horn are next. Got drums, percussion, guitar, bass, digerdo, recorder, keys. Thanks brother.
I was a militant atheist for over 40 years until I was saved by Jesus Christ. Then one night he put a dream in my head that I was going to play saxophone. So today I went and bought one.
I love Kenny G and especially when listening to his playing, calms my soul. Once I met him in Singapore Airport while boarding the plane... what an honour. I have always wanted to play Sax but couldn't afford one till yesterday. Managed to buy a used sax... hopefully that will be the beginning of my journey, diving into the world of sax.
I played trumpet in middle school and hated playing instruments after that. But im trying to get back into playing instruments and the saxophone really speaks to me, it just sounds so beautiful even on its own. Im renting a saxophone from my local music store before i commit to a purchase. Great video for newbies!! Im interested in playing saxophone because i of the musical artist will wood having a lot of sax in his music !
I am yet to get a saxophone but what interested me was one Sunday, I heard 1 or 2 songs that sounded really good so as curious as I was, I asked what is this lovely sound, and he responded its the saxophone by Kenny G. those calming tunes were stuck in my head until I decided to hop onto youtube and listen to one or two of his songs and from there I was hooked. I have been listening to saxophone covers from a variety of artists which solidified my interest in this instrument and how powerful it can be. Hope I get my hands on a saxophone really soon so I can get started on an exciting journey.
Great. Kenny G is a great starting point. If you like him there are loads of other players to check out too like Dave Koz, Boney James, Michael Lington. Many have done things for us at Sax School. Stan Getz made me want to play sax! I chose trombone when I was young and had a great time playing in concert band, but always regretted not choosing saxophone because of how versatile it is.
I'm 71 years old. I was inspired to try to learn the saxophone by listening to "Detour" by Boney James. He's Soooooo Smooooooth ! My first saxophone is on order. I watched the RU-vid video Boney James - Detour (Official Performance Video)
I'm 67 years old and I'm learning as many interments as I can. I started with a mouth organ, then piano and now the sax. I love that sax man that plays a solo part in a song! it gives the song a distinctive imprint and is easily recognisable..like Sting's Englishman in New York
I played clarinet years ago in school, always wanted to play the sax. Henry Mancini’s “Pink Panther Theme” inspired me initially as well as Clarence Clemons. Can’t wait to learn!
Fell in love with the sound of the sax when i first heard Baker Street as a teenager. Have wanted to play (or even just touch one!) ever since but have never found the time. Went to a madness tribute band a couple of weeks ago and was mesmerized by the sax all night. Im now 55 and think its about time it came off of my bucket list. So im looking to buy a second hand Alto Saxophone and give it a go. Wish me luck.
I started out playing piano, keyboards synths, then drums and guitars. Now sadly arthritis is preventing me doing that so I bought an Alto. As a child my late father used to play a lot of Jazz on his reel to reel tape deck and one tune I loved was by a quartet led by Dave Brubeck with Paul desmond on Alto called - 'TAKE 5'. (probably before your time!) Also Baker street but a guy called Kenny G really brought relaxing sax into the forefront of music. Late night listening driving on a summer night. He had VERY famous chart hit with 'SONGBIRD' on alto. SUPERB. GREAT LESSONS!
thank you so much for this free knowledge, Ive recently bought an 1978 Alexandere had it over hauled and had no idea where to start, this video was extremely help full, and for me what really made me fall in love with the sax was the saxophone work in Bob Segers Turn The Page.
I’m actually a clarinet player, so listening to Benny Goodman with my great grandma was what got me into jazz! Just now learning alto after having played tenor in jazz since middle school.
I played in school and into my early twenties, but now have not played in over twenty years. Just got an old tenor and am planning to start again. Thanks for making these videos!
Now retired & looking for a challenge! My wife bought me an Antigua Alto Sax. I don't read music, have had a couple of lessons, but looking forward to having a structured approach to learn the basics, through to playing some tunes, practice I hope will make better. I really enjoyed listening to Eugene Bozza - Aria for saxophone & piano, what a classic tune....
One thing that I think was extremely helpful as a beginner was learning how to properly use the lower thumb to push the instrument forward (rather than holding it up like a clarinet) and how to align the neck-strap properly. Very underrated techniques, much like not resting my arm on my leg while playing. Nice Video!
As comments below 60 years old and now have time to learn. Loved Gerry Rafferty Baker Street Hazel O Connor will you Roxy music jealous guy love them all and later David Gilmore Red sky at night.I had a guy from work who was going to teach me so I bought my alto sax. Developed adult asthma so couldn't play and now starting from scratch again. very much a visual learner so looking forward to your lessons
When I was a teen, I rode my bike to blockbuster to return a movie. There was a guy on the other side of the parking lot playing the pink panther song on saxophone. It was so rad, and made me want to play. It wouldn't be until 20 or so years later that I would get a sax from a friend, and another 4 years before I got a mouthpiece for the dang thing and am FINALLY learning how to play!
Just starting again after getting my sax overhauled, and still finding I was squeaking...probably getting the mouth/reed combo wrong... the saxophonist in Supertramp inspired me. Amazing. As well as other sax players over the years.
Started on clarinet 3 years ago and switched to playing trumpet in marching band lasts year, my friends in the sax section managed to switch me back over to reed instruments and I'm going to play alto in community band next month! Having fun learning so far, its a great instruments and I'm glad I got my hands on one
I’ve been a drummer for many years I’ve always been fascinated with the saxophone because of all the soul music I listen to growing up I’m seriously contemplating on taking some saxophone classes, and maybe even purchasing one of my own in the future the one saxophone player that has caught my ear for sure is Maceo Parker
I'm newly retired and am trying to re-learn the alto sax now that I have more time at my disposal. . I played in the high school marching and concert bands about 46 years ago so I'm not a total newbie. I was first inspired to play the sax by 2 great jazz sax layers who were popular when I was in high school, Grover Washington Jr and David Sanborn. Of course, I had been exposed to many of the jazz greats by that time also since my dad loved jazz . I'm hoping to be able to play with confidence by the end of the year ...eep me in your prayers !
Thanks for your message here Michael. Grover and Sanborn are two of my sax heroes too - legends Have fun getting back into your sax - just being consistent with your practice and having fun learning the music YOU like is the best way to make quick progress. If you aren’t already a member, I think you’ll love how the resources in Sax School will help you get there fast. Take a look here: saxschoolonline.com/courses/
I hinted to my oldest daughter (who just started self-learning the Bass) that I might pick an instrument to learn anew as well. I’ve always loved the sound of the sax and well I think I’ll start there with the tenor. A song that inspires me is Broken Hearted Kota by Joseph Shabason - I’d relax by my fireplace with a cigar and square-bottom glass of cognac and enjoy the frequency
Clarence Clemmons I am listening to, along w Ry Cooder, but what brought me to the sax was having been playing flute in my hubs' rock 'n roll/blues band (I'm 59, been playing flute since very young) and being encouraged to segue, for the benefit of the band and adding my musical acumen to include the sax (having also heard 'fingerings are the same!'), so am excited to be learning alto. Have a mentor but enjoying your style of teaching through the videos.
