Eric Marienthal has that uncanny ability to smoothly shred the sh*t out of a fast bop tune, "Got A Match" by Chick Corea. Always astounding to me how effortless he phrases at these high tempo's, which you can experience in different versions of "Got A Match". Always loved this complete version by the Chick Corea Elektric Band live at North Sea Jazz, this was a very influential solo on me as a teenager just coming into jazz. Hope you enjoy, leave a comment!

Eric Marienthal has that uncanny ability to play kind of, ehm, how would you call that... smooth bebop? It's astounding to me how effortlessly he phrases at these high tempos, which you can experience in different versions of "Got A Match". Always loved this complete version by the Chick Corea Elektric Band live at North Sea Jazz in 2003, this was a very influential solo on me as a teenager just coming into jazz. Frankly, I was just blown away by the 20 second melody of the tune played unison at first. God, I watched that little clip just over and over (that was in the beginning of video's on the internet, when somebody had only the melody uploaded. Little did I know what was still about to lure around the corner when later the full version including solo's was added... minds got blown there). People can criticize Eric for playing a lot of pop, but somehow his ability to play both jazz idiom and pop very well has given him a very unique profile which not to many saxophonist are able to do. Many bebop/hardbop players might play very nice solo's over this, but Eric fits a part of that idiom very well with combining it to shredding and using rhythmical very strong riffs and/or displacements. I think Eric does have his unique approach to play over this kind of music. Not in a smooth jazz way, nor in a very hardbop/bebop style. Somewhere - very cool to me - in between. Hope you enjoy, and leave a comment, love to know what you think!

I think gerald albright is similar as well- able to do pop/smooth jazz and legit jazz language very well

I mean i think the fact that he plays with these other musicians should be enough for anyone. If you think eric's playing isn't very good then you are criticising chick corea's taste. I dont know who would do that...

Criticising a player for playing pop is stupid imo. Patrick Bartley plays jpop, video game music and anime music yet absolutely tears up jazz as well. Ppl play what they want to and if it's good it's good like who cares what style it is

I love Eric's versatility. Is this the same concert where they did Spain as an encore? That version of Spain (on RU-vid over a decade ago) was one of my intros to jazz, and it was definitely life-changing from a musical standpoint.
@SharpElevenMusic
@SharpElevenMusic Год назад
Hi Robert, that's not from the same concert. The "Spain" you're referring to is from "live at Montreux 2004", which I've transcribed as well on this channel by the way, as well as a complete solo analysis what makes it so great :) it's indeed an absolute amazing solo by Eric there! This was taken from the North Sea Jazz festival in The Netherlands, 2003.
