Hi everyone! This is the first official video I did with my own voice (other than the announcement video). I am quite nervous and excited at the same time. If you don't know about this change, go watch the previous video on the channel. I love you!

I’ve actually been thinking that the speaker did not match 100% with the words in your previous videos. Until now 😄 As a subscriber of your channel I’m super happy with the change, it just feels much more natural ☺️ But regardless of what voice is used, you make really good content, so please keep up the good work 💪❤

I think clothing quality topic is so rich. It could split up into two parts. One for fabric and one for structure and pattern.

Hey there! As someone who has been working in the fashion industry for over a decade, I've learned that natural fabrics aren't always the best choice for clothing. While materials like cashmere are durable, wool and silk fibers can stretch out over time. Also if silk is used as the only material in a garment, it can develop tiny holes after just a few uses. Plus, natural fibers can sometimes be itchy, like Norwegian wool, which is the best wool to work with. Cotton fabric is the best out there. Even in knitted fabrics it is durable and doesn't need much care without losing its form. On the topic of synthetic fabrics, have you heard about the recent studies on polyester athleisure wear? It turns out that the heat and sweat from our bodies can melt some particles of the fabric, which can then be absorbed by our pores. I think this is something worth considering when it comes to choosing what to wear during exercise. That will be a good idea for a future video. Don't you think?

Synthetics shed microplastcs into our waterways. Plus they start stinking after 15 minutes of wear.

Banana Republic used to be my go to brand. The clothing for me and the quality was there. I had many pieces bought in the late 1990’s early 2000’s which lasted forever. Today it can be hit or miss.

A spinner/weaver here. If you can, avoid clothes made with mill-spun Merino (especially the ultra fine one) like a plague. The fibre is chemically changed (and we are not talking about washing soda here, there are *dozens* of highly toxic chemicals/solvents used in production of ultra fine Merino). Chemicals that leech into your body as you wear the finished clothes. On the technical note, the garment does lack every single attribute of natural wool- the fibre goes through the same process as viscose. It is melted down and re-created into a perfectly uniform, sleek stuff. That's why it feels more like rayon, viscose or silk than real wool. Don't believe me? Okay, go and spin woollen yarn from raw fleece- and you will see exactly what I am talking about.
@ElderMoreMind
@ElderMoreMind Месяц назад
This actually explains some things. I bought some wool vests from Cos that didn’t feel like any wool I had ever experienced- very smooth, almost with a slick feel. Wool can take a variety of forms and, of course, isn’t always scratchy or rough but until this purchase have never felt any that was ‘smooth.’ Not sure how it will hold up. It maybe lucky that these were vests and aren’t likely to see a lot of washing.
@jvnd2785
@jvnd2785 Месяц назад
@@ElderMoreMind, you are right. Pure, unprocessed wool is naturally "grabby". Almost like Velcro. This is caused by the structure of the wool fibres- there are millions of tiny barbs around each strand of fibre. These barbs hold the fibres together when the wool is spun and create loftiness (insulating qualities) in the finished yarn. They are also the reason why wool felts- the barbs lock together with friction, heat and moisture (except for some wool/breeds that naturally resist felting). Now, when wool is processed in a commercial mill, one of the first things that happens is that the wool is stripped off of these tiny barbs (coated with a very fine layer of polymers or chemically liquified/turned into viscose). This is done for several reasons: 1. to help in the spinning process (natural wool can NOT be spun into extra, super fine, perfectly uniform yarn), 2. to prevent shrinkage, 3. to "moth-proof" the yarn. It is then run through a series of chemical washes that give the wool shine and soft handle. Now, there is a huge misconception going around the world that wool is "scratchy". Natural, unprocessed wool is not "scratchy". It is pure, breathable and amazing product. Natural wool is not sleek. It is not soft like silk or Suri Alpaca. It is wool. Sheep's wool. And it has the best properties to keep humans warm in the cold weather and cool in the warm weather (yes, wool is perfect for the summer garments as well). Why then people think that "wool is scratchy"? It is proven in many studies that the more people wear man-made fibres, the more they dislike natural fibres in their purest form. The skin used to chemical cocktail of rayon, viscose, polyester, nylon and heavily-processed cotton overreacts when it comes to the contact with natural wool. At the end of the mill processing, the wool has lost most of the insulating, moisture-wicking, self-cleaning properties. That's why commercial woollen garments have to be washed way more often than unprocessed wool- and they often get stinky (the polymer coating holds onto any body odours). This is also a reason why, if you try and over-dye commercially-processed garments (especially super fine Merino), it usually ends up in a disaster.

What materials do you recommend
@jvnd2785
@jvnd2785 Месяц назад
@@13ikea, choose pure, unprocessed/minimally-processed wool from your local sheep. If you are in the US that would be Finn, Polypay, Columbia, Hampshire, Southdown/Babydoll etc. Woollen-spun (spun from a carded batt) is preferable. Go for un-dyed yarns or naturally-dyed yarns if possible. If you are choosing acid dyes (commercial dyes), opt for light colours and avoid dark colours: dark blue/black and dark red.

In my experience, cotton loses it's shape quickly. The only natural fabric i truly love is linen. I have a lot of rayon, polyester and a mix of cotton, polyester and rayon clothing and they are still in great shape. Some pieces i've had for over a decade even. And, they don't crease as easily as natural fabric. A much needed topic. Thanks!

100% cashmere will wear out quickly even though it is a great fabric. If you buy an item, you will probably have to get it tailored; you need a good tailor.

I agree. Just like cotton. I find a blend of syntthetic fabrics like polyester, rayon and a bit of cotton last longer. They also look and feel great. It's about knowing how to pick clothes for me. Not so much the fabric anymore. Natural isn't always better.
