Exactly, how can the city even do that, someone who knows how should set up a petition, everybody who wants the park to stay, call Colorado’s state representatives and tell them you don’t want the park to go, the city shouldn’t be able to just take property that they don’t own.

Actually the comment about Elitch Garden’s originally opening in 1980 is false. Elitch Gardens has been a fully operational amusement, zoological and botanical park since really the year 1900. It originally actually opened as a zoological gardens in 1890, and in a different part of town (off of Tennyson). It was 1900 that they first brought in rides. Elitch Gardens would more than likely be relocated, and many locals such as myself, couldn’t be happier with that idea.

When the park moved there in 1995, the land was bought with city bonds. It will be the second time and a second location that they close Elitch Gardens which first opened its gates in 1890. I worked at the old park in 1989. I never liked the new park, it just didn't have the same feel as the old west Denver location.
@Ferris1986
@Ferris1986 4 года назад
My dad worked in the Games department from 1990 until the move, and then worked the whole first season at the new park in 1995. He was the games supervisor from 1992/1993-1995. He has told me many stories about the move and how the last four years at the original location were since I was born in 2000 and never got to visit the original. Its truly sad how they let it go during that time and then left what remained to rot until 1999. My dad never liked the new park much either. It definitely is nothing like the original, especially after Premier/Six Flags took ownership in 1997 and sold it in 2007. Even some of the rides that made the move are different now. I wish I had grown up with the original as it seemed to be something truly special to much of Denver and Colorado's residents. I hope they can relocate somewhere bigger where they can recapture some charm and stay around as Colorado's oldest amusement park.

Demolishing the old Elitches and putting up this monstrosity was a horrible idea. I previously worked at this Eltiches and I am not sure they ever turned a profit. It has been sold many times. They don't own the land they are on and have to lease it from the city of Denver for around $250,000 a month. They told me the only thing they make money on is the parking. I remember at the end of the season they would throw everything in 4 huge dumpsters. All the prizes. all the candy, all the beer, all the soda, all the food, all of Subways food I couldn't believe it. Hundreds of pounds of still good meat and cheese. I filled my car up and the security guard told me to put everything back. You would think at the end of the season they would have just given it away as a public relations tool when the people were leaving. No way they have to throw it in the garbage. Greedy fools. I say good riddance! As far as the city of Denver goes. They will have that place out of there and demolished so quickly it will make your head spin.
@trainlover16
@trainlover16 5 лет назад
Why are they always closing these parks just for stupid houses, that's the worst possible reason for closing theme parks. There was once an indoor theme park in Newcastle England called metroland, situated in the metrocenter shopping centre on the south banks of the River Tyne. They only had about 12 rides including just 1 coaster. But the park was so well themed that everyone who went there remembers it. I had a lot of fond memories going there as a 3 year old. But back then I was not really into theme parks. And I was terrified of roller coasters back then so I never got the chance to ride the coaster. So I just spent much of my time there hanging out on the train ride or the helicopter ride. The park first opened in February 1988 2 years after the shopping centre itself opened. And lasted for over 20 years. But then Newcastle City Council decided to convert the park into more shops, restaurants and a cinema. The locals were understandably not happy, but despite protests and a pertition that received over 5000 signatures the park did indeed end up closing down, operating for the last time on Sunday April 20th 2008. Closing forever at 8pm UK time that day. It is such a shame that metroland is gone and that this park may also be gone soon too.
@trainlover16
@trainlover16 5 лет назад
I forgot to mention that all the rides were sold after the closure but the roller coaster remained in storage behind the newly opened cenima until 2015, when it was sold to the Big Sheep Adventure park down in Devon. Opening there in May 2016 under the new name of Rampage. The coaster still operates there to this day.

There is another option for the rides if Elitch Gardens close permanently and don't reopen at another spot. Some of the rides and coasters could go to nearby Lakeside Amusement Park, which is also in Denver.
@karlkern968
@karlkern968 5 лет назад
If relocated for Elitch 3, I'd pick a place along the foothills to use that geography for coaster height. I'd also have the "trilogy" of Mister Twister (rebuilt), Twister 2 (moved or rebuilt), and a new Twister 3! Keep Mind Eraser and build a mirror image coaster called Mind Restorer! Parking would be surface and garages.

I actually work at Elitch's and I have heard whispers throughout the park amongst management during the 2018 season that they do have a new location set somewhere. Also, slight fact check, Elitch Gardens originally opened in 1890, not 1980. It used to be located closer to where Lakeside is now. It was moved Downtown for the 1995 season. The Old Elitch Theatre is still there as well as the carousel shell.

This news makes me so glad I moved away from Denver. Those new developments will be great for the rich that can afford the ridiculous cost, but for those regular families already barely able to get by in the suburbs will get nothing it of it. A theme park is something all family's can enjoy, so with it being replaced with such high cost businesses that is one less reason for regular families to stay in Denver. At this rate as soon as that development is finished it will be over run with homeless.

Who cares about community benefit for generations when a handful of people can make a short-term profit? Elitch Gardens is one of this country’s most historic parks. However, maybe this park’s doom was sealed when they first decided to move it from the original site, the site with actual GARDENS, to a dump of a site, and then fill it with clone rides. Move it by Dicks out east. Add a giga and a strata coaster and maintain it! In Denver county I think that there's a height restriction in the building code. It has to do with blocking someone's view of the rocky mountains.? There for no hyper, giga, or strata is ever coming to this location. Even Mile High Stadium was built to a certain height for that reason. We have the room for a record breaking park!

Also it gives them room to expand which was a major problem currently as to why nothing could be added and the very reason why six flags gave it up so i say do a massive overhaul with the exception of twister 2 every roller coaster in the park is a clone....give the mile high a RMC...i mean its a complete slap in the face for there not to be any RMC's in the rocky mountains

@@mistamista8524 They are more likely to close forever than to get an RMC unfortunately. They really need to move out near DIA though, but they would have to bring over most of the rides because they wouldn't be able to afford all new ones. Plus, Sidewinder and Boomerang, maybe Mind Eraser, and all the flat rides deserve to live. I say they add a GCI Twister III that recreates the original Mister Twister with a bigger drop and larger helix. Also I wouldn't mind if they ditched Half Pipe. Its a maintenance nightmare.

Closing this will not boost tourism unless its being moved. Think about disneyland or disneyworld, if they close down Cali and Florida will have less tourism because some people including myself only went there for Disney for the kids. Honestly, this is really excellent news. Elitches is rather small, yet being landlocked, has no space to expand. Its limited variety of rides become restrictive after a while. With any luck, they’ll simply uproot the park, move it elsewhere where there’s plenty of room to expand, and then...well, expand.

elitches has been a special place for a lot of people in the Denver area, it's what we would look forward to in our summers, and one of the huge Colorado attractions. Honestly I think Astroworld was a much bigger loss as far as urban amusement parks go. If the city of Denver helps with the relocation and the park can find a larger site this could very much be for the best all-around. The current site is hilariously small and that space isn't managed on a Blackpool or Indiana Beach level - which would be necessary for it to be an enticing regional park. As it is it's a city or "metro area" attraction, but not much more. A bigger plot of land would do them lots of good, and a new GCI honoring the Twisters would make a solid opening-day headliner. The steel coaster lineup (as ghastly as it is) can be relocated. If not... Well Elitch looks pretty charmless next to Lakeside - which is a park I'm more worried about for it's historical significance, charm, and smaller operating budget.

Since the same company that runs this manages Magic Springs in Arkansas, maybe some of those flat rides, the dark ride and that Half Pipe coaster could be relocated there. Magic Springs sadly could use it.
@Ferris1986
@Ferris1986 4 года назад
What I find funny is that Sidewinder (the Arrow shuttle loop) actually first opened at Magic Springs back in 1980 as Roaring Tornado then moved to Elitch Gardens in 1990. They could literally give them back their old ride! I just hope that Elitch Gardens gets to relocate in the future, rather than close forever.

As a Denver native I'm pretty excited for elitch gardens to move. Ive been several times and the park always seems so small and kind of dingy. I think if they move out to the plains somewhere, maybe green valley ranch or out by the airport they could have some space to spread out and make a really nice theme park.

Elitch Gardens did have a say in the closing. The land and park is owned by real estate mogul Stan Kroenke and the park is operated by Premiere Parks LLC. The Denver City Council and Kroenke already had dealings planned for the land where Elitch Gardens sits because Kroenke owns the Pepsi Center arena next door. Logically, that land ever since Kroenke purchased it was subject to rezoning and redevelopment. It just happen so that the Denver City Council approved it. As far as Elitch Gardens as a theme park, it has a good chance of being relocated and rebuild in a more spacious area in the Denver Metro Area. Elitch Gardens is far from being closed forever.

Okay, I apologize in advance for how long and jumbled and potentially dry this may be, but the fact that Elitch could be moving again actually gives me a bit of excitement. So on one hand, I’m pretty sad that Denver’s only large theme park will have to move from its prime location YET AGAIN, but on the upside, if they’re able to move locations, they might actually have space to expand to their full potential if they buy up the right real estate. Just thinking, there is nearly 4.6 million people in the Front Range Urban Corridor (the pretty highly-populated region between Pueblo, CO and Cheyenne, WY). This region takes only about 3 1/2 hours to traverse from north to south, so if you plonk a theme park down just outside of the Denver metropolitan area (which is pretty much the midpoint of the urban corridor), you’ve got already got built-in population base of 4.6 million people less than an hour and 45 minutes from the park (assuming your average local is willing to travel that far for a theme park, which seems entirely feasible to me). To put this into perspective, the metropolitan area that feeds Energyłandia in Poland (the Katowice MSA) is fairly comparable in population. So despite the sad news, this relocation may actually be a blessing in disguise if Elitch Gardens plays its cards right. As cool as their downtown location is, I think it’s limiting them. With new space, I think it could really turn into one of America’s major theme parks.

This is definitely a big threat to the Sidewinder (the Arrow shuttle loop), but with how popular it is among guests combined with its small footprint and status as Colorado's first looping coaster opening in 1990, it hopefully would get saved when the time comes. I'm a native Coloradan and its my favorite ride at the park and I would be devastated to see it get scraped like most of the other Arrow shuttle loops over the years have been. When the time comes I'm going to try my best to save it, because it truly deserves to live on. Hopefully it is moved to the third Elitch Gardens location if they move, or it is sold to some other small park who will reconstruct it again rather than let it sit like so many other relocated rides. It deserves to live on much more than the ill-fated Half Pipe. That ride is never open and breaks down constantly. I say scrap the Half Pipe.
