Tip from my dad: Use slings or belts to carry heavy items. Put the slings under the load and use them as handles. This will allow you to straighten your back and lift with your legs, and it will be much more comfortable and easier to do it.

You're better off watching one of the excavator channels - they'd get this whole project accomplished in one day of real time, and 20 minutes of yt video time, as opposed to dragging it out for multiple years - but they don't have the cute folk music in the background

The Architectural Digest should do a piece specifically about all the horrible work that they have found in the house. I lost count of the number of types of shoddy work in there. I really don't think the house was poorly built, I think it was grossly neglected over the years, this is a result of neglect. My partner and I used to do demolition. We were working on an older house, in Vancouver actually. And he got a teensy splinter in his arm. Within two days his arm was so swollen he couldn’t bend his arm. He ended up in the hospital for two weeks and then another week of going in daily for more intravenous antibiotics. He had such a bad infection he almost lost his arm from the elbow down. It was bad. No matter how small the wound, always take the two minutes to clean it out and bandage it up. You don’t need to run the risk of a very nasty infection. Especially with the amount of insects and animals that were calling that place home, not to mention whatever bacteria grows in the damp and dark.

Guys, that four piece box section header IS stronger than a single large square board. Each side of each board is in stress or tension, meaning you have 8 times the area carrying load over a four sided square board. Hollow metal tubing in any shape is stronger than solid for the same reasons. I apologize for not explaining the engineering better or the actual math equation as sadly I only play engineer in my day job and I suck at algebra! But I do know the basics of structural building concepts and materials and trust me, the box section is what you want.

I can't beleive their getting rid of so much of that good wood. What's the point of replacing all of it? It looks like 90% of it is fine.

I‘ve done a lot of building and projects with my dad and it‘s so incredibly nice to see you never getting yelled at, my dad would make a mistake and then yell at me for it, and he is a really shitty builder, his motto is „use the screws I have in my pocket even if they are all different and when those run out use some nails until it won‘t move anymore… I‘m glad my brother doesn‘t yell when we work on something together but he only does car and metal stuff, so I rather work on my own than to go to my dad

it's nice to have scaffolding. Maybe not for all at the same time, but some scaffolding that you can move around. It will be nice to have for exterior maintenance in the future too. Balancing on those ladders is a risky business.

Reading around the web it looks like the permit process in the Vancouver area is very tough. Demanding detailed planning for every last nut/bolt, how they will be installed safely and be forever safe when completed. So the approach taken prior to the city’s stop notice was completely at odds with the nature of the permit process as would have been the way the house went up in the early sixties. Episodes to date are likely to have been the stuff of an H&S professionals nightmares. In current times how far one goes in trying to ensure safety is a question which seems to end up with the whole nine yards for everything as the answer. A case of regulatory overreach I think. Rapidly rising levels of mind numbing regulation/control has been a hallmark of this century so far. However, construction work is the most hazardous and accident prone affair and at some points, like handling the steel beams down ladders, you seemed a hairs breadth from disaster. For future handling of heavy stuff at height mobile lifting derricks/tripods/forklifts would be options to consider. Further reading on the web indicates it may also unfortunately be the case that a notional one month turnaround on permits may have stretched out to many months from a combination of more rules, more applications and insufficient human resource to turn them around quickly. If the permit process is long and arduous some interesting and useful content, particularly for Canadians, would be if you explain what the stages in the process are, how to get the application right first time and if there are any avenues by which the permit(s) can be walked through more rapidly than if just submitted and left to their fate. Perhaps the permit process is not as tough as at first it seems and you might be able to offer reassurance to people who are considering similar projects. Should all work on site stall because of the permit situation turning back to craft video content for RU-vid would keep funds coming to cover the cost of that new roof. Perhaps another fund raiser would be to sell, for a small fee, an information pack which tells folk in more detail the history of the house (article, who commissioned it , who designed it, year built, the original sixties drawings, new roof structure etc).
