Saying no to the No-Till Coulter

The no-till coulter has always been the go to solution for the no till farmer. However what is the benefit? It causes hairpinning, requires additional down force and makes it tough for row cleaners to work properly. In this video Jeff Wherley with Yetter Manufacturing talks about why we need to say no to the no till coulter.

Yeah, hair-pinning residue and uneven seed depth are major challenges across varying soil conditions in no-till. The no-till coulter (sharp flat disk) is a great help in my experience, when needed for certain conditions. Row cleaners alone cannot move long-stemmed or thick mat residue as well without a cutting coulter between them. The coulter cuts the residue so row cleaners can move it effectively. If you don't have thick mat long-stemmed residue, taking the coulter off works great. I would rather have the ability to place a coulter between row cleaners, when needed, than worry about distance between row cleaners and row unit gauge wheels. The only way row cleaners would affect seed depth is when they are set fixed over hard soil conditions, and any amount of distance between where row cleaners engage the surface and the contact point of row unit gauge wheels will affect seed depth equally. Float setting on row cleaners fully addresses seed depth issues associated with row cleaners lifting the row unit. Last, never use coulters for anything more than cutting residue in no-till (very shallow depth setting on the coulter); creating the furrow is best done by the seed disk opener exclusively. Shaped coulters intended to do some tillage ahead of the disk openers do more harm than good. No-till soils are naturally moist, and any shape other than flat disk will slab out chunks of the seed furrow ahead of the disk openers, usually applying it to the gauge wheels, which is creates a more significant seed depth issue.

I ran frame mounted no tills so it does not affect the row unit.

How do you guys seeing them work with 15inch row beans on a kinze planter? Wouldn't the rear row cleaners cover up the front rows making the front rows emerge/grow slower until they get above residue?

they were awesome on 15" rows for beans! there is some residue the gets ontop of the front rows, however it is not enough to hinder emergence. also the narrow row cleaners are pitched at a different angle than the 30" to eliminate this
