It's really clear from the comments below who are blinded by technophilia and have never actually owned or sailed a boat.

Lee boards with hydrofoil wings -> less ballast , greater SA / displacement ratio => faster , improved righting arm , improved stability and enables shoal draft cruising - allowing settling on tidal flats comfortably like a bilge keeler -> avoid cost of haul outs . A revolutionary concept . Well done !

Ok.. Heres what I see: 1. Stability while moving and stationary. I put this first as this is a big concern for many people. 2. Lift while sailing to enter planing faster. 3. Vessel kept upright in order to keep more wind on the sails (Put your hands up if you've blown gear on a catamaran cos you didn't depower in time!). 4. Light show from the plankton bio-luminescence hahaha. 5. More balance trim on sails/rudder with lee foil down. I love this concept. There is a good market for this for sure. I'd love to sail something with this. Just look at the other crazy things that racers and cruisers put into their boats.

This will definitely find any weak links in your rigging. I'm no engineer but generating lift against the push of the mast should result in some major forces on lines and the add on stabilizers. A yacht with this built into the keel may be a nice option. Someone should jump on it. I'm not a big sailor but love my boats. I can definitely appreciate the idea.

Lee Boards with wings, wow what a difference this makes. Taking an old idea and improving on it makes perfect sense. The advantages of this system far out weigh the added mechanical and electronic components needed to make this system work. I am impressed.

I've long suspected our old yachts will soon be obsolete, and various types of foils will become the norm. And of course the outrigger has existed for thousands of years - you can throw on some extra sail and cruise at a flatter attitude... Jolly good show, chaps! Best wishes!

"Getting into the planing mode" Ummm...that boat will never ever plane off. Can re name it "Flapping Rooster" with those chicken wings hanging off the sides. And the first good storm will likely rip them wings right off.

OMG, I had come up with EXACTLY this idea, myself. I had been studying hydrofoils, and hydrofoil sailboats, and it occurred to me that retractable foils could be used to reduce heel in conventional monohull sailboats. These outriggers with foils could make them act like trimarans.

You conceived the engineering, built a prototype, recorded demonstrations, prepared this video and uploaded it here in 2016 - all before the last AC races (35th) even started! This foil system shares the conceptual flaws of the AC75 foil system. I find but two differences: - Your L foils may have lower induced drag vis-a-vis T foils. - Your foil's righting moment is lower, unless you use an S lever like the AC75. That said, your claim for creating the foil system seems to be quite solid.

I enjoyed the Calculus, Geometry and Physics lecture. I have found most of the information on the internet is like getting a weather forecast. Everyone repeats what they have heard; no one verifies the facts or even knows what the facts are. Allow me to ask you a simple physics question; take two round objects the same length and size, both have the same nose cone similar to a jet aircraft. Object A; starts the gradual curve to the end (tail/stern) point at 50% of the length. Object B; starts the gradual curve to the end (tail/stern) point at 75% of the length. Simple Question: which object is faster given everything else is constant; Object A or Object B. Last question what is making Object A or B slower given everything else is the same (constant)?

@KnowledgePerformance7

I see a lot of problems. Reducing your displacement boat probably won't do very much to increase your speed as it induces a lot of drag, especially if it's not lifting the boat a whole lot cause it's a displacement boat. Now you need to be running a high power pump to move the foils all the time, so a generator is required. "For cruising" yeah how are you docking with those wings??? Stability is probably true, that's just more wing surface in the water. The pitch one is really what hurts. Boats sail much faster if they are allowed to rock up and down waves, and many performance boats aim to reduce weight aloft to assist with this rocking motion. If their system is designed to damp it, that's drastically hurting your speed in waves. I don't hate the idea, I really enjoy sailing on very high performance boats, and want one for cruising. That said if your system claims sit do everything well, it doesn't do anything well in my experience.

I've been shipmates with similar type systems on commercial fishing vessels with steel hulls and they are very impressive in most weather and sea conditions . They need to be built/designed very robust to withstand the torture for each vessel . On a GRP or similar construction it would be very taxed in my opinion unless the vessel is specifically structured to handle them . Not an after market add on (one size fits all )for sure .

always love when people t ry to pass off something ancient and trusted as brand new and revolutionary. That's probably half the reason people are critical of this so it's backfiring here. This is basically a cross between an outrigger (which maoris have been using since christ or so) and leeboards (which have been used since the medieval ages as far as I know and probably much earlier) this is just powered and automated. I am not going to knock the idea, but in sailboats usually the simpler the better. The more that can break or go wrong will

One of the benefits of a mono-hull sailboat is that it can dump the wind-force through a full- or semi-knockdown from unexpected gust strength or too few reefs. With this system it seems that the boat will not be able to dump the wind-force which will put catamaran like forces on the mast and rigging. Would you not then need to constantly cycle through sail changes with this system as you do with catamarans? Would mono-hulls need to be engineered with stronger mask and rigging to account for the increase in forces? Also, in the unfortunate case of a capsize how do these wings affect the boat's righting moments for self-righting?
@EdmundRobinson
@EdmundRobinson 6 лет назад
I need to see some independent professional test results regarding all of my queries to begin to seriously consider this system. Tank test, marine engineer studies, CE ratings, etc.

Self righting is my concern as well.
@mrmrlee
@mrmrlee 6 лет назад
The boat should self right with the wings, as long as they are relatively light weight. However, the idea of radically reducing the keel weight as shown would definitely reduce the ability to self right.
6 лет назад
A rig which permits instant reefing meets this requirement. A modern junkrig / wingsail hybrid meets this requirement, and improves sailing in many ways, such as by providing a more reliable rig, better efficiency to windward, and eliminating free standing sails which must be fought to the deck and replaced at great effort with other sails.

Here in the Netherlands our old sail freighters (froom 1800 orso) used a more simple and rugged system. on both sides,the ship has a large vertical dropshaped blade that can be lowered according to nessecity.. The dropping and hoisting is done using a rope and some blocks. the tear shape with the rotation in the point of the tear makes it possible to partially lower the blade if neccesairy. The system showcased here is very ispace consuming and unnecessary complex.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 3 года назад
That is similar, but does not provide vertical lift of a horizontal foil, so not as much righting moment to counteract the horizontal force of the sail. Also the type of board you describe goes back many more centuries, and was an early way steering was done.

Exactly viedotosse... this all seems silly when you can buy a cat or trimaran. As for fitting into a dry dock, not an issues as their are many folding trimarans if that is an issue for you. However if you can not just let go of the old monohull ways I guess this is the way to do. I own several multihulls and monohulls, but if I want speed I will also go with a multihull.
@jeremyrainman
@jeremyrainman 6 лет назад
Single hulls are more inherently stable in true storm conditions, at least with a traditional keel. Without a traditional keel, this stability is likely reduced, and I am unclear on how much you gain with these flop-down wings. Catamarans are more dynamically stable in all conditions except when it hits it's limit for inherent upright stability, and then a cat will flip upside down, and you will never get it upright again. In theory, a foiling monohull is the ideal offshore boat, however the maintenance and wear-and-tear on systems such as these are an unknown cost for unknown performance benefits. Also, in theory, with appropriate skipper decisions, catamarans or trimarans can be made VERY stable during true storm conditions. There are tradeoffs for all sailboat configurations, there is no "Best". Also, the configuration of this system is sketchy when it comes to sail-rig work. Just imagine you have to tack your 150% genoa and in order to do it you have to lower this fin in the water... it's added complication. There are ways of doing an offshore foil that are less cumbersome than this design.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад
The foils fully down in the water during a storm would add large stability, like two more large keels and two large horizontal foils. That said, the joints would need to be very strong since the storm loads would go through them. Agree in the up position the appendages could interfere with long headsails.
@funtosail
@funtosail 6 лет назад
Yes and if a foil breaks, which will happen as its only a matter of time before one hits something at sea, then you're screwed, especially if your boat has a modified shorter weighted keel.

I would bet money most saying to just buy a multi hull dont have a boat or knowledge of them. Traditional boaters know all the disadvantages of each and wieght them based on thier preference. I dont sail cause I like diesel way too much personally but to say that this boat would sail or react in any way resembling multi hulls is just not right. The foils would not equal the extra 12' or whatever of beam on a cat. Most that admire tri hull haven't spent much time listening to the hull slap water for days on end. This just gives you more leverage against the wind plus the stabilizing effect and ability to trim up would be the best benefit.

Lucious brun, totally agree with you : some comments are nothing but agressive. Those people don't seem to be quite openminded. How could anybody anticipate fatigue of a new device that brings less stress in the structure ? Anyway the trend in multi-hull IS the foil, as well as some mono-hulls today in America' cup. I just remember the very first picture of Eric Tabarly testing such foils on a Tornado inside Gulf of Morbihan (Britany). At this time nobody believed it coult change the things in sailing, but today we start to see he was right !
@salviatino12
@salviatino12 6 лет назад
Well consider this. In antiquity it took centuries to realize that boats could be sailing upwind by using the centerboard. Before that boats would only be sailing downwind. The revolution of introducing foils is far from modern: according to the Wikipedia already attempted in 1898... In the sail world revolutions have been more on the way you would design hulls,, new materials both on the sails (and its design) and on the hull and mast to reduce weight... those revolutions posed fundamentally nothing new compared to what it was in antiquity the centerboard (or keel). I think we might be witnessing a new similar revolution is just around the corner with wings and foils.

Foils only offer dinamic uplift at high speeds. "Foiling" at 4, 6 or 8kn makes no sense at all. Furthermore, you're putting more weight over the waterline, more systems, more electronics, more battery consumption, etc.

Exactly. Or buy a trimaran.

Wrong. Have you ever been on a cruising cat or tri? Way more space. I had a 33 ft cat for years I had at a dock. Never had any issues. Folding tri's work great at a dock and have as much space inside as any keelboat. So seems to me w8stral2 you have little if any experience with multihulls.
@funtosail
@funtosail 6 лет назад
What the freak are you talking about there are several manufacturers of folding tri's one of which is Corsair. There are a lot of folding tri's our on the water. I see them every time I sail on the coast, and also see a lot of big cats in Marinas as well. And what is with the name calling now. We are talking sailboats, nothing terribly serious. Relax and take a deep breath.

w8stral2 whoa, why so aggressive It's a sailing discussion not UFC
@funtosail
@funtosail 6 лет назад
I know the w8stral2 person desperately needs to go on a vacation and maybe have an enema done. Sorry to say his so called FACTs are only facts inside his little mind. And no the VAST MAJORITY of tris are not non-folding. I do this for a living and live it each day, so I know. As for other tris and cats needing 2 slips, well like I care. If you can not afford that then buy a slow boring monohull (I actually like slow boring monohulls). And no multihulls do not lack volume compared to a monohulls, one hull, two hulls, three hulls. Now if you are talking hull designs... displacement, semi-displacement, etc. then that is another discussion. If one comes aboard a big cruising cat and then goes on a keelboat, its obvious which one is more spacious, etc. The cat feels like an aircraft carrier, and the keelboat feels like a submarine. Not to mention when a keelboat is under way and heeling, its useful space is reduced, but not so on a cruising cat or tri. Anyhoo w8stral2 thinks he knows what he is talking about but we will let him live in his little made up world.

Wow! Again, in the attempt to dumb everyone and everything down, we have taken a very simple concept like traditional sailing and added technological complication to eliminate the need for skill. In my opinion, this is a dangerous trend, because history has proven time and again that skill, and the ability to autonomously cope when things go wrong (and at sea, its a given they will!), and relying on a good, seaworthy boat design with simple systems, beats vulnerable high tech systems that are complex, prone to failure and impossible to repair at sea. To wit, modern racing and cruising designs, while exhibiting impressive performance when heavily supported by a resource-rich ground crew, often run into insurmountable difficulties when pitted against the forces of nature. Think Fastnet 1979 disaster, and the many broken canting keels manifest in modern round-the-world racers! Think of how many modern boats with their inexperienced crews are abandoned when the wind and waves pipe up, their skippers over-reliant on electronic gadgets and not knowing even the rudiments of seamanship, depending on the authorities to rescue them from the messes they get themselves into. Give me a good old Alberg design with robust construction, simple systems and good old fashioned built-in seaworthiness any day! Aesthetically beautiful example of function following form, without the need for ugly appendages sticking out the sides. If you are not comfortable with the natural motion of a boat at sea then you have no business being out there - stay home parked on your couch and watch it on the television.

Did you follow the last editition of the Vendeé Globe? Or do you know the dynamic Stability System used in the boats from Infinity Yachts? A real and functioning sailing boost. If you want your boat stomping through waves relying on its weight to push the water out of the way while watching a modern boat streaming past you, fine. But technological Progress will always be made. And after all, saling is still a sport, looking for speed. And speed is produced by less movement in other directions than your heading, less load on the hull and rigging.
@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr 6 лет назад
Sire Mondieu ya. This system doesn't increase safety, and I see his point in resenting the implication that it does. It will make the boat a lot faster, and in my opinion in fact more dangerous, but it doesn't mean a skilled skipper shouldn't have it available. 😊

stability this is wath it is for on a monohoal, and you use it when and if you wish to use it, i find this a good idea and it s free for you to or don t get it, sure you get get a catamaran instead but if you are a monohoal lover you then have it all, it also reduce the kell deep and if i understand it well it may also be use to beach the boat

I hope you feel like a pos when you look at the America’s cup and other world class sailboats that implement this exact design. The wings at stability to keep the mast pointed upward and to stop the heeling motion. Your a dick. I’m not even a very knowledgeable sailor but I can tell that you’re absolutely talking out of your ass.

Absurd complications. Tons of drag. Mechanical systems that require maintenance, etc. A multihull solves all of these problems in a much simpler way.
