Organizations fail to leverage the intellectual capacities of their key assets - their employees. Much of this is due to the fact that innovation is relegated to select groups (e.g. innovation teams) and units (e.g. R&D Labs). In addition, employees and their managers waste a lot of energy on various aspects of innovation due to misalignment of incentives and expectations. To scale innovation and entrepreneurship one does not need expensive fixes and elegant solutions. Organizations need to get back to their basics and remember what made them great and scale fundamental processes to be successful at organic growth. This talk will provide the audience with simple, and frugal (cheap), solutions to scale intrapreneurship.
Dr Kevin C. Desouza is an ASU Foundation professor in the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University. He is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. He served as the inaugural Associate Dean for Research for the College of Public Service & Community Solutions from 2012-2016. Kevin holds a visiting professorship at the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana. He has held visiting positions at the Center for International Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, the Groupe Sup de Co Montpellier (GSCM) Business School in France, and the Accenture Institute for High Business Performance in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA).
Desouza has authored, co-authored, and/or edited nine books, the most recent being Intrapreneurship: Managing Ideas within Your Organization (University of Toronto Press, 2011). He has published more than 130 articles in journals across a range of disciplines including software engineering, information science, public administration, political science, technology management, and urban affairs. His work has also been featured by a number of publications such as Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, Stanford Social Innovation Research, Businessweek, Wall Street Journal, Government Executive, and Computerworld, among others. Most recently he curated the Ideas to Retire series for the Brookings Institution that examines practices that are stifling technological innovation in the public sector. Desouza has received over $1.7 million in research funding from both private and government organizations.
Specialties: Dr. Desouza has advised, briefed, and/or consulted for major international corporations and government organizations on strategic management issues ranging from management of information systems, to knowledge management, competitive intelligence, government intelligence operations, and crisis management. He is frequently an invited speaker on a number of cutting-edge business and technology topics for national and international, industry and academic audiences.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
