Doc scalps down the cool season lawn to give the new germination a chance to reach the sunlight. There aren't many times you want to scalp cool season grasses and he explains.

Just put the grass seed in 5 gallon or bigger buckets and fill with water. Change the water every 12 hrs till you see the seed germinating! Then mix the seed with your favorite fertilizer and spread it!!..... unbelievable percentage of germination! Way more then just grass seed laying on lawn! Works miracles!

Going to try this in the fall to the back yard just in case it’s failure lol. The failure percentage is always me 😅

How does this spread when it’s damp?

Doc... I have an idea..🤔 Because you have been so blessed with a lot of land. Can you take a section and divide into sections 50 feet long with each section a different type of grass. Similar to a Bowling alley. It would be a great classroom. Thanks again for the videos. 👍

Appreciate the cool season grass content. Hopefully with the farm house we get more. Keep it coming

Bought an EGO the other week and returned it the next day. The cut it did on my lawn did not come close to my Honda. Hopefully electric mowers get better.

If you pick up your clippings, aren't you risking picking up your seeds with your clippings.
@Erectmygreenhouse
@Erectmygreenhouse Год назад
Yep. If you've only just re-seeded then you want to leave the grass for 10 days to germinate preferably under garden fleece

I cut my lawn today. Turf type tall fescue. So therapeutic, this weather is nice. I watch all your videos, and I pretty much follow your suggestions except I don't use the dirt booster. Instead, I'm amending with peat moss in the fall. Zone 7b, 50 miles north of Atlanta.

Great content. I also have annual rye and love it but boy do I struggle with the accumulation under the deck of my toro TimeMaster with the mulching blades. Ballard makes a high lift blade that handles it much better on side discharge or bagging. The mulch blades whip that rye into a pulp like consistency that coat the deck. What works even better for wet rye is a cheap non mulching, side discharge bolens style mower. No accumulation at all and knocks it down well without wearing out your good equipment with the mess. I reel mow it also with the TruCut and it takes well to it. You do still get some accumulation on the reels but a good wash down after use helps tremendously.

I don’t scalp but I cut it as low as my cheap mower cuts which is 1.5”. My grass is healthy but my neighbors lawns are thin so it helps get rid of some brown

That spf 30 is great stuff. I been reel mowing mine at 3/4 inch in northern Arkansas. We'll see how it is in the summer

Seeded Fescue in my winter rye lawn a week ago and starting to see some germination. I’ve been cutting this lawn every 2 days and still needs to bag it. I’m wondering when I start raising up my mower settings and how gradual?

Any chance you might discuss leveling with the cool season section? I appreciate what I have learned from you since early 2020!!

My Bermuda lawn has several bumps and low spots. Is 1.5" ok for scalping and then mow regularly at 2". I am using a rotary push mower and I can lower it to 1" but it will cause it to scalp to the dirt in a lot of areas.

Starting to look that way? Bermuda needs lots of sun and I am not sure Doc is getting that around his farm house. Maybe he can start a sod farm on one of his fields?

i " scalp" my grass a few times every spring because im under trees and leaves get matted up everywhere ...also helps to remove dead grass and helps the soil to warm up ...ill cut higher when it gets hot and dry ...if i overseed in the fall ill cut short like you suggested ...good info ...
