The history of kibra, The Nubian soldiers were fighting in the world war and when they came back the British didn't want them to go back to Sudan, so they gave them that land kibra which means forest.so literally kibra is a Nubian land. All the way from jamhuri to langata.
@@georgephilip4565 Nubians settled along the Kenya - Uganda railway that's why you find them even in kisumu, think kibos but most of them assimilated to local community. So some even in kisii,
Nubians are good people. They played a very big part by clandestinely helping the MAU MAU fight the British during the liberation war. However they did not get any credit .
I'm so sorry you had to go through that with the restaurant scammer. I almost passed out seeing him eating YOUR food, and as if that wasn't enough, he overcharges you?? Are you kidding me!! Please know that he does NOT represent all Kenyans. His behavior was deplorable. He was greedy, unethical, and is a quintessential thief! I also hate that every other person was asking for a handout. I'm Kenyan, and I'm sorely ashamed to see this. I hope you can visit other places where people are well mannered and have a better experience in the future.
@@BADt0OtH no he’s not. That’s a small-minded entitled mentality. People view this channel to watch Yve document his journey. Those people could easily choose to not be on camera or accept him patronizing their establishments. What camera did they purchase or which video did they edit?
@@moreeno6062 where in the video do he invite anyone to sing, dance, perform, or be on camera in any way? He’s living life and documenting it because you allowed to record in public.
It is unfortunate that that ugali guy decided to be shortsighted and overcharge you. You paid 10 times for a piece of ugali and he ate a large piece of your fish and kachumbari. He's a disgrace!
I really don't like it when people take advantage of others. Honestly, how long does that hotel guy think he'll last on KES. 700? Overcharging a customer will NEVER make you rich. In fact it makes you poorer as you end up losing customers. I'm a Kenyan and I didn't find that exploitation good at all! 😢😢
I dont blame the man who scammed him alone. I also blame the people who were around and kept quiet while he was being overcharged. Especially the lady they sat together with him to eat. It's bad. Many Kenyans are dissapointed and they dont represent majority Kenyans.
This video is trending in Kenyans and guys are angry at the sheer audacity of the vendor, such behaviors only makes one become poorer. Honesty in business goes along way while greed benefits you for a day or two
it's great that you don't let one negative experience ruin your day or have negative notions towards the locals....you still remain friendly....that's amazing
That was a terrible experience being overcharged like that. All good will gone. But a Kenyan would've stuck to their guns and refused to pay, especially after giving him the 500.
He was being overcharged the whole time ... From the kachumbari chopping at a price😮😂 but it was the guys carrying a wheelbarrow for me😂😂 I mean they would have pushed it😢😂
Start by embarrassing the lying NGOs that have given Kibera the label " largest slum in Africa" with fabricated estimates. Then follow the slum poverty tourists who continue to perpetuate the false narrative. Those are the real scammers. Even the slum dwellers know they are used for views and raising funds that never help them.
No worries, everyone can see that most of the people were friendly and the fast majority of the country's citizens are probably nice. I also understand that he asks more money to a western tourist, although it is not friendly. Greetings and best wishes from the Netherlands
I’m a fairly savvy street wise person. I’ve grown up in some rough areas but walking around that place alone, holding an expensive camera with cash in my pocket… wow! Yves you really do fly with the angels when making these videos and are truly one of the most daring guys on RU-vid.
@@yengoedwin2410 Yes and they know the area and know all the Do’s and Don’ts and what streets and areas to avoid. Yves goes in totally raw and all it takes is one opportunistic criminal to snatch the camera. It’s risky… but the risk gets the views.
@@stanleymureithimukara6714 Yes. It's Kenyans who've given places like Kibera and Gikomba their bad and fearful reputations. Many of those Kenyans never even go to these places.
As a Kenyan, I apologize on behalf of Benard Obiero for scamming you. That was an unfair price and does not reflect the behavior of most Kenyans, and I believe you have witnessed our hospitality within the time you have spent in our beautiful country.
This is life. He asked again and was given a different price. If you've dealt with retailers, matatus, etc, you'd know you ask first. Even I would be told a different price if I look gullible.
@@brillwatuma4973 Kabisa. To be fair, when muzungu visit our parks, they do pay even 10 times more! Yves, this was his small break. It was a mere $3. Ai!!
Okay, those guys that won't let you have your meal in peace are embarrassing. I know we like to sugarcoat things and pretend that they are poor but those are not peole who are starving, it's just bad manners. I wouldn't want to imagine having a meal and every person wanting to throw their hand in my plate, strangers for that matter. Plus the deliberate overcharging, which is basically stealing.
23:13 I was so angry when I saw the guy wearing the military shirt asking for kachumbari. And he didn't even bother to say thank you afterwards. I'm starting to believe that there is an outbreak of foolishness in Kenya!
At first, I thought Yves just grabs a camera and walks out into the streets. The more I watch I realize the amount of work behind the scenes. He could probably write a thesis on each city he visits not to mention learning a few words to be able to mingle. Your evenings must be like homework! Kudos!
The entire Kenyan Government is filled with people like that Ugali guy, he'll eat with you, even eat your fish, then con you at the end with a smile on his face.
Arrest is a bit draconian bro...if you were in his shoes ..it's not like he's studied supply and demand curves from ivy league business schools ..he's just trying to ake one for him and his..# tuko africa bado bro!
You gave that matumbo seller your food and he still scammed you. There are bad people outside there. I live in kenya and I can tell you that 200 was the price of matumbo and ugali not matumbo alone. And the 200 shillings matumbo should be a full plate not 2 spoons. What a disgrace to our lovely country.
As bad as the vendor was for over charging, that is what has trended and gotten me to know you. Good stuff. The Kinyozi video was therapeutic for me. I miss home
He did ask the price of the matumbo earlier and the guy had gleefully said 200. With his experience so far, Yves knows ugali does not go beyond 100bob. If a meal was 300 or above, no one would buy in that place.
Very friendly from you. You shared your meal with that conman and he overcharged all that amount. Such people should be punished for such acts. It's very shameful and embarrassing for us Kenyans. Notably even the lady you had lunch with and the others that were around did not try to tell this guy whatever he is doing is wrong. Shame on him.
It's a scam where locals claim the place is dangerous then run a racket offering themselves as bodyguards to walk tourists through the slum. Nothing will happen to you, especially in daylight. Foreign tourists love slums for some reason.
Yves was kind enough to share his fish and tomatoes with the dude and he had the audacity to turn around and rip him off. Also, good job on telling those bums chewing on the street to get a job. Why is it when we see a white person we assume that he has money and start begging? What a shame mama africa what a shame. It really bothered me to see this and made me feel super angry. Good thing you are a patient man Yves.
As a Kenyan- it is shameful what just happened to you, most of us ain’t like that. That vendor should return your money. But anyway, such greed is the reason why some people will never succeed in life
Golden rule of street survival is to ask the price before purchasing. Everyone was complicit there because no one stepped in to intervene. That's the sad part for me. If anyone walks by there, be sure to drop in and shame Bernard Obiero. He's not a kenyan son.
9:56 Hey Yves! I’ve been following you and I think you’re very brave. Please take care of yourself and especially of the street food you’re eating all over 😊
Hi Ives, it is realy remarkable that most of the people in this slum area were friendly. But don't be naive! The situation can change within seconds in such an area. I wish you good luck and hope that you can continue your journey on your bike very soon!
What has shocked me the most is scammer TRULY believes that he has done nothing wrong. He’s not aware of what he’s doing is scamming and totally fine and normal. No morality no ethics no shame, unbelievable mental state
Kino is going to make a lot of money from the video.. at the expense of these guys .. who allowed him to film them.. I don't get why he should complain
Hey Yves i have been prompted to subscribe to your channel as compensation for the unfortunate experience. You're an amazing guy and will keep following you till Johansberg
Yes, imagine still asking for more, I’m glad he don’t add him the 200 he was asking, oh God mostly of them asking money from him, his food as well Jesus People 😢😢😢😢
Ugali na Samaki yummmmmmmm.. It can happen unfortunately and a shame when it does but theres so many genuine people in Kenya, don't let those that rip you off tarnish the journey too much. With such situations where you have already consumed the item, simply pay and never give future business their way, loving the journey since Ethiopia when I found the channel - Rik
Wow, thank you for showing us Kibera, it's not as bad as I imagine, some parts are nice but I wish the government could do something about the garbage and the drainage system. The ugali guy was a disappointment and his greed was not necessary, that was sad. Despite the difficulties most if those people face it is encouraging to see they can still smile and be friendly and helpful. The school kids were very nice and polite. Quite an eye opener
It's true that guy of ugali and matumbo was too greedy, he over charged you. Noted he even took part of your fish and kachumbari. You could have said, the fish/kachumbari part he took was 300ksh to even up
Yves, another brilliant video and sad 😢 to see that you were scammed. But what sets you apart from most European vloggers is your idealistic approach to life. When exploring different places, you genuinely connect with the local people, steering clear of a superficial feel-good mentality. In Nairobi, you not only explored its positive aspects but also delved into its less explored facets-an admirable approach that highlights Nairobi's multifaceted nature. Moreover, your historical insights shed light on the roots of contemporary global south problems, revealing their colonial origins. For instance, the presence of Nubians in Kenya can be traced back to colonial beliefs in Hamitic theories, asserting that valuable aspects in Africa were introduced by the Hamites, considered a branch of the Caucasian race on the continent. The British, following a strategy of racial and ethnic segregation, implemented a "divide and rule" perspective, allocating leadership positions and roles based on ethnicity. Nubians, Kemet, as well as present-day Somalis, Ethiopians, and Kenyans of the Swahili Coast, were favored over other black communities, following Indians and Whites in the hierarchy. The influx of Indians and Nubians, brought in as indentured laborers for trains and policing/military roles respectively, shaped the demographic landscape. Consequently, areas like Parklands became home to many Indians, Eastleigh to the Somali community, and Majengo to Swahili Coast people.
Am sure that's why nobody bothers with him because the first thing any gangsta will ask himself is, who is this njungu walking alone with a camera in kibera not bothered about anyone. Commando comes into mind and they chill😂
@@John-N797thats ACTUALLY wat happens.. i worked an NGO kibera and all the white pple were never bothered coz kibera pple know they are coming to help
sucks to get scammed, feel like its bound to happen in slums like that. In the USA you wouldn't be any safer in our slums. Thanks for the 40 minutes video. Always nice to transport myself to Kenya for 40 minutes! Be careful dude, always nice to see the side people don't show, but never under estimate desperation. Stay safe brother. The girl you ate with was a cutie!
Heck, it happens even in some nice european cities. In Prague we were scammed almost the same way - nice restaurant, friendly servers, then at the end... surprise! Using ketchup, mustard, and mayo was an extra $3 each, complimentary bread was actually $20, and everything else 4x as expensive anywhere else. $200 meal should've been $30. Never trust a place that don't have prices on the menus! Anyways. Shit happens. That's travel!
unbeleivably how deeply rooted seems "give me" attitude is in Kenya is no matter man woman or child but i was speechless by that owner of stall selling you ugali asking you fish and just taking tomato not even waiting approval for it and then he has nerves charging you 10x the price disgusting i would probably just leave without pay,he ate half of it anyway you are definitely better man than me or at least more patient it reminds me on India
When I saw the cook eat some of Yves' food, I thought it was going to be one of those nice discount situations lol. I guess there's always 2 types of people
That guy who over charged you for ugali, that is bad business for him. Now people will see and know not to go to him for ugali. Not a smart business man. Then he turned around and eat some of your fish and vegetable and have the nerve to charge you 1000 shillings for ugali. This is such a turn off for me and many others watching, so now visiting Kenya that is one place I have no interest in going. I understand people are poor but that is no reason for being dishonest. Integrity is very important.
Our Kibera slum is actually a decent estate when compared to some of the slums in West Africa! 😢 Kibera has accessible tarmac roads, electricity 24/7, toilets and WiFi 😊 The same slum upgrading is being implemented across Kenya especially with the implementation of decent affordable housing projects which aim to eradicate all slums in Kenya 🇰🇪👍
After watching this,I realized that our greed for money makes us loose potential customers, it's so sad that even after being given ksh.500(which is 13 times the price of ugali),he still goes ahead to boldly demand for more money, the vendor should have used this opportunity to promote his business online rather than surcharge the white guy, sometimes you just sit back & regret some things
Those were my thoughts too. It's a shame really that the elected officials in those areas don't seem to care. What do they do with the constituency fund. Seriously good drainage and rubbish collection will be a start. And here is Ruto screaming from the rooftops how we should take steps in reducing global emissions when his backyard is the biggest pollutant in Kenya.
Morning my friend too!!!!😊😊😊That Matumbo guy is such a disgrace! Taking your food and overcharging you for the same!! and the girl too invading your lunch.... it's so embarrassing! Anyway happy to see your enjoying and exploring Nairobi...I miss the bike rides
Jamaa wa kibandaski kidogo ameburn but Kibera being 2nd largest slum in Africa, was quite a smooth experience for you Mr. Kyev. The gentleman in yellow T-shirt towards the end can make it far with the heart/mind he has if he puts in the work. Blessings guys.
Waah. Watu wa kibera bana, it's better to ask to be bought food than asking him to share the little he's taking🤣🤣The guy asked for a share and then boom, he overcharges him without any remorse
Hi Yves, I have been following you for a while and I have a little suggestion for you . You need to go to print shop and print thousands of stripes with your Chanel name and hand it to people that ask you about your RU-vid chanel. A great marketing ploy , simple people will definitely remember a written thing and more likely to share it with others!;) J'espère que ça va aider ta croissance car tu es un des rares youtuber honnête!
It was interesting to have a conversation and to share some food with the locals Thank for bringing us along. it is a shame and a problem why they ask and cheat people for money.
I hate that ugali man who thought he was a hero trying to overcharge you 10 times the cost. What a disgrace (na mwenye ako iyo area)amwambie kitamramba na ataishi na huo umaskini milele. I wish you could hear me screaming no to give him the cash. Why my fellow kenyans should we be such bad mannered especially to foreigners.Ata aibu hatufichi jameni. Honestly i feel so bad to see such scenes with even others asking for money as if they are tied their hands no to hustle and they call themselves men.Bure kabisa. I sorry @Yves for that small issue you had hopes you didn't to deep in your heart and next time ask for price before anything else thats our way of living. Am starting such a vlog content very soon. See u on the trike.
In Kenya when one passes that scam you are qualified. Ask before eating and entering public vehicles even us locals prices rise if you don't ask especially public vehicles😜
🤣you should have told the snack guys to go eat matumbo where you paid 700ksh.they would have taken you there and demanded your money's worth in food.the new title 'i fed a gang from my scammers restaurant.'😎

They even ate from the food you bought...them proceeded to add rediculous price...even the guy taking your fish to “taste little “ Kenyans I hail 😮.,shameful act
The man said in an earlier part of the video "I am dying poor" and surely this is a sure way to die poor by overcharging and we have watched Yves overpay because he wants to. But saying ugali is that price is wrong and we can all see
The issue with the slum is just political . There are leaders who are using the people living in the the slum for their political gains. Like our opposition leader was the MP there for over 20 yrs.
@@M_flickWrong mentality. Mps don't receive taxes to develop their areas. The Government gets all the taxes and it's their responsibility to bring development to all. Their insecurities make their positions as privileges to reward those who vote for them and ignore those who don't vote for them. Many people who don't know any better sees nothing wrong with this and join the Government to condemn the victim
I am so embarrassed as a Kenyan. Minites after praising Kenyans then you run into an unfortunate, but familiar Kenya. Life of learned desperation and sadly personal and community entitlement. Who bewitched you people!! Thanks for others with a great Kenyan spirit. Yves, thanks for showing me home.
It became common during the era of begging and demanding foreign aid by our leaders. The current generation of wananchi have perfected it thanks to corrupt leaders who buy votes by throwing money to wananchi. Before the begging era, street begging (outside Nairobi) was considered shameful behavior and you rarely had beggars in the towns except for the mentally disturbed. In Nairobi it was street children, mothers with small children and the disabled who were begging. Today we have grown able-bodied men and women shamelessly begging even as they conduct business.
That guy was rude as hell and took your kindness for weakness. Imagine scamming someone after they share their food. Brought shame to his business and country.
mr kino the fact about kenyan people are very open people most are nice people but they have dangerous people about scamers specialy night out but if you want kenyan people to talk try day shifts specialy morning&lunchTimes don't use cash in puplic and don't show you have more cash that's good advice to you and continue your tour without fear.
On behalf of all Africans we apologize for that scammer and liar who overcharged you. Shame on that guy. How can a man coming all the way from France and eat with you and you price gouge him! What a bastard! He should have his business shut down.
Most people who say Kibera is dangerous have not been there. Some are just prejudiced because they like to look at themselves as a better class. They don't understand that despite conditions being hard you will find the best of hearts there. I have found that the realest or most genuine people who are rich in humanity are the ones that are looked down upon.
