We were lucky enough to have one of our friends who works on Gardner engines to drop by and have a look over our engines that are in the Scammell's. He popped in due to having a job cancelation, which gave me the perfect opportunity to get some Scammell and Gardner footage. He has also taught us some good things to do with the wagons and engines to keep them running well.

On the missing cylinders, it's also worth checking the delivery valve springs, in the pump top. Carl ex Gardner fitter.

Yeah I think we will end up just going through the lot at the minute, it might even be they could be abit coked uo because it never goes out and gets hot anymore too. Thanks for the idea too though.

@@ThePhilBilly ye no problem, in all the years doing Gardner engines, I've seen about 3-4 broken springs. And people look at heads, sprayers, pump tops.

First thing to do is to remove injector pipes and the clamps and check delivery valve holders are tight. As they slacken off over time even with the clamps. Have cured dozens upon dozens of engines by re-torquing them. Next Id be checking the phasing of each cylinder using the proper phasing button for an LW. May be the orig pump-tops but if phasing is wrong you get all sorts of issues. As for the weeping elements or plungers that are soaking the felt dust covers, it could be weak/worn plungers but can also be where the barrel of the element sits in the alloy pump body leaking. To lube the quadrants in behind the alloy cover and the trigger box Gardner say to use a few squirts of engine oil. The centre dust cover between the pump tops should be removed and any grease cleaned out, the control pins checked for freedom of movement then regreased. The damper/buffer in the trigger box should be checked its free, and grease placed on the excess fuel button, trigger and plunger in the damper. LW's only have small plungers compared to LXB/C/CT's and L3 n L3B's. But their delivery valves which can cause issues are normally very good wearwise as long as the fuel supply is clean. They can break springs but being beehive type springs thats not too common. Ive only ever seen a handful of busted LW springs out of the 1000's of Gardner pumptops Ive rebuilt and they were from water damage. See more broken springs in the cambixes ram tappets on LW's. Plus they break plunger springs as well. Biggest thing on a Gardner fuelgear wise is to keep it lubed, ensure phasing is done exactly how Gardner wanted it done, timing is checked, 2BA Bar is adjusted correctly, stop lever is set right and if pumptops and injectors are calibrated to Gardners figures of Time and not number of shots like modern engines you wont have issues.

Grand that's some good useful info there, when I get a chance to look at them again I'll have a go at what you said. Thanks

Its all quite easy to check and sort. You could airtest the pumptops yourself too. Be nice to see the smoke gone from the exhaust. You should be able to literally bring a Gardner to its knees and not have smoke from the exhaust. They might smoke for up to 5 minutes after a cold start but after that they should be clean as a whistle in the pipe. When we start a marine Gardner of any size after a rebuild we drop them into gear when they show temperature and good oil pressure then try to pull the wharf down while tied up. Should see nothing but a ball of heat from the exhaust. And we have crap diesel here unlike wat you guys get in the UK.

@@matui6983 yeah I would love to get it set up properly, it doesn't help they are probably abit coked up at the min too, never been worked hard for a very long time. Also might be abit more smokey since we put some classic engine oil in with the modern disel to make sure the pumps say lubricated.

In the small original operators handbook that came with a Gardner and some of the workshop manuals the factory specifies you can add lube oil to the diesel but only up to a certain percentage. Could be a combination of things causing the smoke. Im sure you will get it sorted.

@@matui6983 yeah we will figure it out! Like I says I'm pretty sure they smoke more cos they never go anywhere or get worked hard anymore so probably abit coked up. Need a good long run with abit of weight behind them

If it is an LW or LX and you want more power out of it. Fit an LK governor spring to the governor and file trigger down at the rack bar end stop on the cold start button down a few thou. Lol.

Handy to know, not that we are worried about more power from them to be honest it would be wasted trying to get more go out of them haha.

Plans change with the fiesta alot, it's staying for the minute, it's too much if a good advert for the business. But if I do ever come to move it on I will give you a shout mind.

I think it was set on the hand throttles in the videos when they are ticking over quicker, I can't remember though was a while ago now. I will still check next time we have them running though, cheers.
