Awesome tips for doing this. I've got many photo albums that the photos were glued in and I was totally bumfuzzled as to what I could do! You're our PHOTO HERO! :)

Thank you for sharing these scanning options. I use the ‘Scanner for Me’ app on my iPhone and iPad and also use my Flip Pal (which looks similar to the Doxie Flip) for scanning old photos and documents.

@Kerry Atkins Thank you for sharing your scanning methods. I'd like to try both of those options sometime!

With an Android phone the scanner app called Photo-Scan is excellent too! It scans it centrally, then you move your camera so that the circle and dots (that are in the 4 quadrants of the picture) align, after it scans in all 4 corners it puts the "picture" together. It eliminates almost all glare/ light reflection and is super sharp. I have done numerous pictures in those old sticky albums. Oh and at the last it shows you where it 'thinks' the boundaries of the picture is, but you can change them if your camera angle wasn't perfect. Highly recommend this app. I don't know if it is available for iphones.

@N PS Thanks for sharing what you like about PhotoScan by Google Photos! Luckily it's available for both android and iOS. I do have PhotoScan on my iPhone along with several other photo scanner apps and find it works the best some of the time and other times another app will work better. As long as an app is free, why not have several, right? 😁 It's nice to have a choice.

Comment by: Carol Moss Thank you! I do have those software apps and they work great. I wanted to comment on the flatbed scanner method. My Creative Memories albums are 12x12 and the typical flatbed is not. During Covid restrictions it was impossible to find a public place to scan on bigger scanners or it cost $0.50 a scan. (too much) SO - I found "Panorama Stitcher Mini" app that I use on my Mac and it worked great. There is a free version and has very nice features. The idea is you can scan the top half of a page, turn it around and scan the bottom half and then click the software to combine them perfectly. Awesome! That sounds like a great app! Thanks for sharing!

Where to buy that small portable scanner?

Unfortunately the company no longer sells the Doxie Flip scanner. I was sad when I heard that! You might be able to find a used one on the internet.

Could you please tell us what the upgrade (paid) versions of Photomyne and Unfade Pro provide over the free versions? Are they really worth the extra cost? Thanks!
@FamilyHistoryHero
@FamilyHistoryHero 5 лет назад
I haven't upgraded so to be honest I don't know the answer to that question. The free version does what I want-get the photo scanned-so I haven't felt the need to upgrade. Sorry I'm not much help there!

@Timothy Calderwood Since I posted my last reply I've checked a couple of review sites online and here's what I found: "The Photomyne app is free to download (Apple App Store, Google Play Store), scan and save photos. To enjoy account sync and online access you will have to subscribe to a Photomyne account (the price for the premium version is $19.99 per year)." To read the full review go here: www.photoworkout.com/photomyne-review/ For Unfade Pro I found this: "The paid version is $6.99 and adds features such as unlimited scanning, added filters, iCloud Sync, and the ability to name and date the photos. The free version works indefinitely without the paid features." To read the full review go here: www.mymac.com/2017/08/unfade-photo-scanner-ios-app-review/

Really helpful video! Thank you so much! I just got Photomyne downloaded to my iPhone. Can you tell me how I get the photos I’ve scanned from the app to my computer?
@dianehoward6880
@dianehoward6880 5 лет назад
I upload my camera photos to Dropbox. This is done through the Dropbox app on your phone. I make a folder in Dropbox that is dedicated to my camera uploads.
@pianomom1954
@pianomom1954 5 лет назад
@@dianehoward6880 That is a good suggestion. Thank you! I've fooled around with the Free Photomyne app and discovered that I can select a photo (or photos) and email them to myself, then from there, download them to my computer. Perhaps in the subscription app there is an option to save a photo in Photomyne to the camera roll. I've not discovered how to do that yet. If I'm missing something, I would be grateful for the help!

imaphotohero @pianomom1954 Most photo scanning apps let you download the scans to your photos on your phone. I thought I'd go in and check how it's done but now Photomyne won't let me do anything unless I agree to a subscription. This is a change from when I reviewed it around 6 months ago so I'm really disappointed. At that time I downloaded all the images so I could compare the quality with the same images captured on other phone apps, and I found it did a really nice job, but I'm not prepared to pay a monthly fee for something I only do occasionally. Again, very disappointed. If it was a one time upgrade I'd be open to that. Since you have an iPhone I recommend you try Unfade Pro, which is free. Click to scan and then click Done. Click on the image thumbnail at the bottom to see the photo and get options at the bottom. One option is Share. That allows you to share in any of the normal ways including including Text message or Mail or Save to Files, which places it in your camera roll.

@@FamilyHistoryHero Thanks for your thoughts and recommendations. I'm going to try out Unfade Pro. It's too bad that Photomyne has taken away the feature to save our photos to our camera roll. :( It looks like Unfade Pro has a one-time paid version, not a subscription. Do you recommend purchasing the paid version? Just wondering if you think the features in the upgrade are worth it?
@FamilyHistoryHero
@FamilyHistoryHero 5 лет назад
@@pianomom1954 I had to check to see if I purchased it (I got it a year ago) and it looks like I did! Lol! I just checked a review online and here's what they say about the features: "The paid version is $6.99 and adds features such as unlimited scanning, added filters, iCloud Sync, and the ability to name and date the photos. The free version works indefinitely without the paid features." I personally think that's worth $6.99. Until I read this review I hadn't realized I could change the date so I tried it and sure enough you have the option to choose a specific year or a decade. If you choose a decade you can also add one of the four seasons, so not an exact date but a lot closer. Sure enough, when I added it to my camera roll it landed at the very beginning with the date January 1, 1950. When you choose a specific year you have the option to add a season or a specific month.

I have over 40 x 100 double sided paged albums. All with cellophane clear plastic over each page. They are like scrapbooks, meaning more than just pictures, also newspaper clippings, added art. How can I digitize full pages, recreating the albums by digitized pages?
@FamilyHistoryHero
@FamilyHistoryHero 9 месяцев назад
I have a large format Scanner (Plustek OpticPro) that can accommodate large pages like that. Without such a scanner your best option is to photograph the pages. We have a Glendan Light Box big enough to photograph pages. Those are probably your two best options.

When you use your phone scanner, can you put the photo into Photoshop Elements and change the resolution to 300 or 600? I have done this with email photos that are sent from a granddaughter living in Albania right now, and it seems to work just fine. What is your opinion? Thanks for all your great tips and information.
@FamilyHistoryHero
@FamilyHistoryHero 5 лет назад
@t Woolford Yes, you can take images scanned by a phone scanner and change the resolution in a photo editing program, as long as you understand what's actually happening. (It can be confusing!) When you open the Image Size dialog box (Win: Ctrl Alt I, Mac: Cmd Opt I) what happens to your photo depends on whether you check Resample image or not. Checking it will add or subtract pixels to create the new size you want. If you just want to make the photo 300 ppi instead of 72ppi, then uncheck Resample Image and change the Resolution to 300 ppi. No pixels are removed or added when you do this (see the Pixel Dimensions section to confirm the before and after number of pixels-they're the same), but the photo is now a much better size if you plan to print it-the document Size becomes smaller. (The pixels are squeezed closer together for a smaller size and better appearance when printed.) If your plan is to simply move a phone photo or scan onto a photo book or scrapbook page, then you don't have to change the resolution first. When you move the photo onto a document with a different resolution, e.g. 300 ppi, the photo will convert to the new resolution automatically (300 ppi) and the width and height of the photo layer will become smaller. Try doing it both ways to see what I mean. The photos will be identical in size on your new 300 ppi document whether you change the resolution first or don't change it at all. So the only time you MUST change the resolution first is if you plan to print the photo on its own without moving it onto another document. This is one of the most confusing concepts about resolution so if it doesn't sound like it'll work when moving a photo onto another document, try it both ways and see what happens!
