Sheets! There are three things to look for in sheets-the thread count, the type of cotton used to make them, and the weave. Higher thread counts are good, up to a point. Too high and the sheets get stiff and they make you hotter when you sleep, because there is little space between the threads for heat to escape. 400-800 is good. Egyptian cotton is very soft. So is most Turkish cotton and pima (sometimes called Supima) cotton. If the fibers are combed/carded before spinning, that makes the thread smoother. The weave-a sateen weave creates a smoother feel on the surface of the sheet. A plain weave, the basic over/under/over that you learn in kindergarten, has a slightly more bumpy feel. You really need to feel the fabric before you buy sheets, as various combinations of these three factors create very different feeling sheets. (I used to sell sheets for Macy’s in the US.)

Thanks so much for this! I’ll keep an eye out for Egyptian cotton now!

Great video. After spending time in Denmark and Sweden in the past couple of years I have changed over my bedding to a very similar approach. The one thing I do different is to fold the duvet intothirds and store it at the foot of my bed until time to go to sleep. Then I simply reach down and grab the top edge and pull it up and it unfolds over me into a comfortable nest for sleeping.

A few weeks ago I switched to a single duvet for my double bed. I was tired of fighting with all the extra fabric of the double duvet that had been my "standard". Not only is the single less expensive, easier to wash and quicker to make the bed. It gives me more than enough coverage for sleeping. And, yes, I also have many feline co-sleepers!!!! I switched to all white bedding because it not only looks "peaceful" but it launders well, especially when I need to use bleach. The cats like to camp out on the bed at all times. For critters who spend most of their lives washing themselves, cats leave behind all sorts of "bits". I have an IKEA bed, so I guess mine is now Swedish through adoption! Love your videos & look forward to them.

This looks so lovely. We have a bed base, which is like a box spring but around 6 inches deep, and is a more ‘traditional’ method in the UK than slats, then a sprung mattress on top. Everything is natural fibres, from our wool pillow top mattress to the blanket we use as a mattress protector, and even our duvet is wool. It’s simple and easy. White sheets too as they’re so easy to keep looking good. We also have the same set up year round, as the natural fibres help with temperature regulation. We own two sets of bedding and wash weekly (and have had the same sets for 5 years, repaired as needed). Our bed frame is a bit more ‘fancy’ than yours - it’s a hand made wrought iron traditional frame, built locally. Painted a creamy white and with proper brass bedknobs. It was our housewarming gift to ourselves when we bought our home, and it should last several generations!

I’m American and I make my bed the same way as you. When I started using duvet covers 25 years ago I thought it was silly to keep using a top sheet! Also, I have 5 kids and getting rid of just one item of bedding makes a huge difference in the time commitment of changing sheets. My kids find it easier to make their bed without needing to wrestle with the top sheet...bonus!

Bed skirt Washable - rarely washed 3. Matress topper Option : memory foam Freshen up with bicarbonate (sprinkle, leave 20 min, vacuum), then air out on a chair outside 4. Matress protector Washable - every 3 times you wash your sheets 5. Flat sheet /or/ fitted sheet Washable - every wash 6. Pillow Wash once a year Option : memory foam 7. Pillow protector Washable - every 3 times you wash your sheets 8. Pillow case Washable - every wash 9. Duvet (1 or 2) Wash once a year 10. Duvet cover Washable - every wash 11. Wool throw at the foot of the bed for pets This setup does not change between winter and summer Air out your bedding outside regularly, use cotton bedding, a lower thread count means softer fabric, make sure to feel the sheets in store before buying your bedding.

My luxury bed setup (a good investment for my chronic bad pain), from bottom to top: remote-control adjustable bed, natural latex mattress, wool topper, cotton covered- and-filled mattress pad, linen sheets, linen duvet cover with no filling (warm climate, hot sleeper), cotton blanket in winter. So, most of the time, three layers of linen as only cover. I use two 700-fill down pillows with first a microfiber protector, then a cotton protector over that, then silk pillowcase on one pillow for night, linen on one for day, if on bedrest (less slippery). I was reluctant to try the wool topper because I thought it would be hot, but it isn’t, it just helps regulate the mattress temperature year-round, reducing hot or cold spots. And it’s machine-washable. I always leave a loose, warm blanket or throw for my cat to go under during the day when the heat is off (about 9-19 months/year here), she loves that, or even goes under all the bedcovers.

I was curious if there was some special sheet-tucking method in Sweden that I never heard of, lol. Nope, just a simple bed. Mine is very similar here in Florida. Mattress protector, grey cotton fitted sheet, lightweight duvet with a tan striped cotton cover, down pillows with protectors and white pillowcases, and two throw blankets at the foot of the bed (grey one for me, brown one for my partner, though our feline family uses them more than we do!). Oh, and since there's two humans and four felines sleeping in our bed, everything is king-sized!

I hope that you are well. Stay safe! Stay sane!

@@shirleyjay6992 try that with English men. They do not get the concept how important sleep is to a person and want to cling to you and take over one's side of the bed and duvet offering no personal space. I lay almost across the bed and lean against pillows. The menopause made it almost impossible to remain in one position all night and restless. When one person moves the other's sleep is interrupted and vice versa. No wonder the population is exhausted! Separate beds and one to share.

In Australia slat beds are quite popular but you can still get a mattress and base set up. The difference is, the base looks like a mattress on legs but you can't sleep on it as it has almost no padding and the mattress is about the same size as the base. You can also add a mattress topper if you want.

Concise and appealing, as always! I would just like to point out to those who may not realise it that almost every country has different bedding sizes... crazy but true! Ikea usually sells sets of either 150x200 or 200x240 (at least, in Switzerland they do, and they don‘t do the 200x210 size any more) with one or two pillow cases 50x60, so you have to get all your bedding from them because if you buy Swiss sizes your single set will be 160x210 and pillow 60x100cm, and a double is 200x200 with two pillows 65x65cm (the extralong size is 160x240). In Germany pillows are 80x80cm and a single duvet 135x200 or 155x210 and in France pillows are 60x60 (or a long bolster...) and duvets are 140x200 or 200x200.... the Brits also use inches, which convert to odd measurements like 137cm wide! It‘s all quite a confusing science depending on which country you‘re in!! I‘ve noticed Ikea adjusts some of their sizing, eg in France Ikea pillows are also 60x60, and their sizes in Britain are also adapted... Anyone else noticed this in their country? What sizes are used elsewhere in Scandinavia or eastern Europe?!

You have to tuck the covers inside so the duvet and pillow don't fall out;-))

We, in the US, have similar beds called a platform bed. Used to be, only low to the floor could be found. Now they come in various heights. Ikea is here in the States. So now have more readily available choices. More modern designs being done now by other manufacturers as well. Americans use the mattress toppers on top of a traditional mattress sold here with springs. It is a less expensive way to have a foam mattress enitialy. All my linens are white.Sheets and towels all white. I prefer the simplicity of it. If needed they can be sanitized and all laundry is faster to wash. No need to separate colors. I only use one flat sheet for my bed for the mattress topper. I don't like getting tangle up in my covers, so I use 1 quilt and one blanket. No top sheet. Love a freshly mad bed. Makes want to never leave it!!🥰

Great video! Thank you 😍I'm glad to say it's very similar to the way I make my bed. Although I do have different bedding in summer and winter. In Madrid winters are freezing and summers are boiling. So from May to September I use a top and bottom sheet with a trow (usually in July August you don't really need the top sheet or the throw because it's too hot!) and in winter a duvet with its cover. But all similar nevertheless. One thing I was going to mention, I found out a while ago after hearing it somewhere and I spoke to Dyson to confirm. It seems you mustn't use it to hoover up bicarbonate. It's something to do with humidity and it damaging the motor. If it was new and it got damaged for that reason the warranty wouldn't cover it. Most hoovers that don't use hoover bags seem to have the same issue. Thank you again. Take care 😍

Well after many many many years of making beds in a hospital in a time where the beds had to have the corners exactly right and the sheets put out on two chairs back to back to put the bedding on so it never touches the floor . Once bottom sheet are on along comes top sheet which of course is not tucked in at the bottom ,it is turned over for operations and if tucked in then a pleat is put in at the bottom to allow for feet . Next came the white cotton blanket again with a pleat in the bottom or turned back for then finally the top cover which of course one had to have the same length at both sides of the bed , Pillows were plumped up pillow slips put on two to a bed ,either put flat or putting out the back head rest the pillows would then go into armchair fashion . Then of course you would turn the bed down to put the patient back in very carefully if they had had an operation or were elderly and infirm, cover them ,up say a few comforting words put the locker back in an exact position put the chair away tidy . Draw back the the curtains surrounding the bed or the screens as it was then . Guess what then whats the next step . Go on to the next bed and the next bed and the next bed 34 times in all on the General Nursing side 76 beds on the Psychiatric Division , the Psychiatric Hospitals . I cannot perceive that anyone needs to be shown how to make a bed , but the lady is correct in airing the bedding outside ,we do that in the U.K. and in Europe ,makes a big difference . Regarding the bed making when one was training to become a nurse in 1969 .The Nursing Sister would watch you make it time and time again, and timing you of course and many times I considered it to be very nearly perfect and indeed many times perfect but Sister did not think so ,She would strip the bed put the bedding on the said chairs bottom of bed , Shouting Disgraceful Nurse So and So ,Will everyone look this Nurse cannot make a bed . Naturally one just apologised and made the bed up again ,asking the Staff Nurse , < What was wrong with it > ,she said but if ,or drop what you are doing to run and open or close the door when they arrived or left the ward s. But they were amazingly kind to us strict but fair .They were wonderful days and the pride in passing your exams after a long arduous training . were some of the best days of my life . Sending thanks to our wonderful amazing N.H.S staff during the Covid Virus . The whole of the U.K. are proud of you all and since the shock of the virus we realise that our beloved N.H.S is the best of the best The Pride of the British Nation . I expect like me all you Nurses know how to make a bed ,bless your dear hearts at this hard time I was around in 1970 ,72 when the Hong Kong flue hit us I know many died ,and this Covis Virus will be with us for a long time . I loved the bed making film bought back many wonderful memories ,

Looks fluffy and comfy! I live in the southeast US so “cool” is what I strive for. I have a metal IKEA queen size frame with a very thick soft mattress. It’s very tall. My son said, “Mom, you’re not going to be satisfied until you have to take a running leap and jump up into your bed.” (kind of true 😂) I only like cotton sheets and cotton quilts and sleep under just the top sheet in summer.

Love your video. And seeing the differences. Our beds are so different from yours. We have a box spring and 16" mattress, bed skirt, sheets, blanket and quilt or comforter on top. Decorative pillows on top of that. I would guess the basic difference is the depth of the top mattress.

I started making my family's beds this way years ago, when ikea first opened in the USA and still had flat sheets. I hate fitted sheets with a passion (I'm thinking of buying queen-size fitted and cut off the elastic.). And I also love the softer low thread count cotton sheets. Still, nice to have a reminder of the bedding order for longer wear. Thank you.

Hi Benita, we have a duvet, but we also use a flat sheet under that, so I don't have to wash the duvet cover so often (such a hassle getting it on again!). In winter we add a light blanket on top. We recently got linen sheets and they are great. We also use pillow protectors; that's all down to Ikea, I'd never seen them before I saw them in store there years ago!

Hello from the UK Benita, your bed routine is so similar to my own. We use pillow protectors and a mattress protector too (from Ikea actually) and I also use the bicarb on my mattress too. I use a flour shaker (it looks like a stainless steel mug with a lid that's full of holes) it's perfect for even sprinkling all over the mattress. I always add around 15-20 drops of lavender essential oil to around half a cup of bicarb too, it leaves a beautiful, restful scent. I also use this same mix to sprinkle across the carpet too (we're always careful to make sure our furbaby Jade isn't in the room until everything is vacuumed tho, so that she doesn't breathe it in.) Thank you for a fabulous video as always, have a wonderful week, hugs x

I use a little soda in the wash or a little bleach to deodorize. But the layering on the bed (covers, sheets, pillow & mattress protectors, then it all goes on just like you! hugs, Judie

Very nice video, I like seeing how others keep their homes. Just a note about memory foam (polyurethane) - it does cause overheating. I had to replace my memory foam mattress with a natural latex one, then I added a wool mattress pad (under my all-cotton one). Problem solved. When I had to choose between sleeping with my cat(s) or memory foam, it was No Contest, cats in bed are essential for a good night’s sleep! Even though they seem to be little thermonuclear devices with fur covering, they’re still always cold and want to cuddle! My cat and I also got ill from the outgassing of my last new MF mattress, from the carbon monoxide and perhaps other VOCs. Unable to identify the cause of the illness until the CO alarm went off and it was at 300 ppm. Polyurethane really isn’t safe, manufacturers spend millions every year for phony studies to try to prove that it is.
