it would be interesting if you showed in some next interior video 5 to 10 images of Scandinavian-inspired rooms, and dissect the images as to why or how they are not Scandinavian, and what you would do to make them more authentic. Thanks -- I really enjoy your videos.
#8 Cleanliness I recall my Danish grandmother when she came to visit us on the south side of Chicago on her hands and knees scrubbing clean the public sidewalk in front of our home! My mom yelled "Mor, no need, no need" but Mormor said it reflected on our family. And how right she was.
Very clear and informative video. I appreciate the sharing of culture and authenticity. Got me on “you don’t see people in Sweden in leggings, we use actual clothes”. 💀😭😅 As a Latina in all the curvy clichè aspects of it, I cannot, for the life of me, find pants in the USA that fit my body well. Leggings it is! But not the transparent ones, for the love of Christ! I like that Calvin Klein has some nice, social, thick material, professional looking leggings. I just got about 10 identical, 5 black, 5 grey. That will do it. 👌🏽😅
I think a lot of people use Japanese & Scandinavian mix (which I think is called Japandi) or Scandinavian style mixed with american farm, beach house or other styles which is why they often say Scandinavian inspired bc they are very aware of that part of the design
"Everything white." White is my favorite color and this is a dream come true. I like a simple, clean, organized space with serene colors. This is everything my husband hates and opposite my very colorful Mexican culture. 😅 Needless to say, this has been a source of contention while trying to decorate my home.
Laminate flooring comes from Scandinavia. In 1881, before laminate flooring ever existed, a company called Stensmölla Kemiska Tekniska Industri (the parent company to Pergo and Perstorp) began refining beech wood in Sweden. The process they used grew very popular. It's very popular in Scandinavian homes and was in all the guest homes we stayed in. I like hard wood better but Pergo and other Scandinavian brands of Laminate and vinyl are popular throughout Scandinavia so the look is very achievable. Keeping the décor simple and clean is more important.
Interesting! Although it comes from Sweden does not mean it is part of the ideal Scandi design, and unfortunately is it not a healthy choice for indoor climate or for the climate! :(
Scandinavians are the masters of laminate wood fabrication. The best example is the laminate wood cross country ski. It was a major innovation in that it allowed for a lightweight ski which maintained a precise camber, which is essential for a good ski. I do remember the skis of the 60-70s that were all wood, but composed of over 30 pieces of wood glued together. I still have one and it is amazing how 60 years later the glue is intact. I think there is also the IKEA Poäng chair which emblematic of this construction method.
True, I believe that came as a result of the high maintenance natural pine floors. I hae laminate floors in one of the houses I lived in, but changed it out for parquet flooring, as laminate floors feels cold on bare feet. 🙂
So as an Indian I am not achieving this look,😂 but thanks for the video, I was thinking of theme for my home. I may use some small elements. 1) Most houses use tiles, marbles as it hot in most places and they provide chill under your feet. 2) Very big windows in Cities - India has plenty of light. So maybe will stick to Indian arts and design which is gorgeous.
Love my 83 yr old original plank floors! They can be sanded down w. a rental machine to perk up after decades or wear. No need to replace! Money for other things...like building a greenhouse for growing food.
Interesting comparison of design aesthetic. We live in a Southern California beach city and."every" flat surface in our home is occupied with photos of family members and friends, small models of sail and power boats, drift wood art and ceramic shore bird figurines. No bare walls. Wall space is taken up by even more framed photo''s. We loo love your channel and I enjoy your videos!.
I was really trying to find someone on RU-vid to inspire me, te make me understand the Scandinavian style, the do’s and don’ts and here you are. Thank you so much. The content you’re creating makes me feel so excited for my new apartment and will definitely help me achieve my design. Thank you!
I’m a former au pair in Denmark and I’m amazed with the interior design. The furnitures and even the bathroom, they also make an effort and I love it! ❤
Maybe that is my Swedish side coming out that I also hate the idea of leggings in public. They aren't clothes! And they aren't your Sunday best meant for church!
@@SagaJohanna Thank you for your channel! I just discovered it and it is nice to learn more about my great-grandfathers homeland. He moved to the U.S. during the time that many Swedish immigrants tried so hard to assimilate into society that so much was lost to future generations.
Aw thank you so so much!!! I’ve never heard of that trend but I’m not into pastel colors. I find that they get boring fast!! And I’ve never seen them in a classic Danish home 🏠
I love the Scandinavian Vibe, but no patterns…that’s like Kim Kardashian home. I’d enjoy visiting, but I’d hate to live without lots of color and pattern in my home. Then again I come from California where it’s sunny nine months out of the year. No, Sunny 12 months out of the year with an occasional cloudy day
I'm a English / British citizen, and I heard about someone building a Eco-Pad eco-friendly mansion house. If I had the money - I would build myself a Scandinavian house, and add some British features to it to make it look like I'm British, too. I think - my opinion - Scandinavian properties are the most attractive ones out there. So this video, has inspired me and given me loads of tips as how to create a lifestyle like a Scandinavian.
Because I've mentioned about building a Scandinavian exterior style house - if I had the money - to some people' and they asked me 'Why would you build a Scandinavian style house when you're British?' But when I told them my thoughts - they were speechless like they didn't know the truth about Scandinavian houses either. Exterior - Scandinavian style Interior - 50% Scandinavian / 50% English The person who built a Eco-Scandinavian mansion - their house is on a website, too (in full detail)!
Probably because she is actually from a Scandinavian country. Most videos i see on RU-vid are Americans 'interpreting' the style but they dont actually live it. I lived in Finland for 10 years and returned to the UK, my house is a genuine Scandi Nordic interior.
In Sweden the most common thing is just roll down blinds, that are not visible during the day! :) I think we are lucky to be in a country where you can live your windows sort of open!
You did an excellent job explaining what to include. I live in a small apartment and with a kid it has gotten cluttered. I hate that. So, I have been looking for solutions.
I like the simplicity of your content and your presentation, also your voice is almost child like but in a nice way of course so it's soothing to hear! Well, I can go on and with the qualities I like about you, your videos and your channel but I will stick to the essential: I love your channel and I enjoy your videos! You're doing a good job!
Interesting and easy follow. I LOVE this style, but find it a bit difficult to achieve. I'll focus on "no pattern" from now on. Do Scandinavian people hate IKEA?
Thank you! Good point, yes I do think it can be quite difficult to achieve especially if one doesn't already live in a Scandinavian looking house!! But bringing in natural materials such as light colored linen bedding and throws, and keeping focusing on "less noise" would be a great start! I think we quite like IKEA, at least most of us :) I think it is a love/hate relationship since we're not used to big malls, and going to IKEA was always a necessity as a child, but I remember my parents not liking the experience. These days I think older people especially think it is a bit too generic, and not of great quality. However, because of cost many people still choose it.
So true. I will add that a lot of our decor and furniture are handed down from generations before us. I think all Norwegian homes have a memorabilia, like a rosepainted trunk, a painting or even a diningroom set. Growing up I didnt think much of it, it was before the term Scandinavian style. I used to have those natural pine wooden floors, and have spent hours on my knees scrubbing the kitchen floor, to make it look blond and spotless. Today I have white oiled oak floors, so much easier to clean 🙂
Love the way you talk to us very natural and friendly. Our house has a lot of inherited stuff and old furniture so hard to make Scandi but will try to bring some Scandi effect.
I have a Scandi interior, I have blond furnishings, except from an old inherited beautiful book cabinet in mahogany with glass doors. It only makes the interior more interesting. Everyone can style their home Scandinavian, inspired from an Ikea catalogue. The personal touches comes from old furniture, before the 50-60s style Scandi furniture are inspired by. You can go more boho, or eclectic and still be Scandi
Great video - highly informative and beautifully presented. I'm intending to use it during my next lesson which is on.... you guessed it.... SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN 🙂. Thank you a lot!
Hey I had a Scandinavian home very cozy in Bird Sanctuary called Valby Park in Sydhavn Copenhagen. Well it was cozy after I got my dog Torsend and my Chinese Diesel Heater donated by a graffiti artist. A free Norwegian Camper Trailer to come home to after a long happy day busking 🎹 at Sjalor Station during the long cold Danish Winter. ✌️✊ Remember fight the power☯️
I did wear gym clothes during my pregnancies and after because it was so comfortable. But when I lost weight during all the breastfeeding I went back to my usual clothes. I have a pair of leggings (inherited from my daughter's oh so huge closet lol) but I'm not sure if I will use them. They may come in handy when it gets really cold. I mean under my pants kind of. If not, I'll declutter them. Love the video! 👍👍👍💗🌻💗🌻🇸🇪
Haha how funny that you only have one pair of leggings - that sounds like a real Swede 😂 I really like the comfort of athletic wear but I like feeling dressed up more! Fun to hear from you 🤍✨
@@SagaJohanna I used to like IKEA and the work of the cleaver designers. I also like the food, which was available to purchase at the shop. All in very good price and quality. However in a past few years quality went deep down and prices high up :(.
@@SagaJohanna ok. But a lot of Scandinavian people do lol so you can’t discount it as playing a part in Scandinavian design. It’s literally interior design products designed by Scandinavians.
The other thing I find Scandinavians value is old and quality, tablecloths, tableware and kitchen items that won’t be replaced for reasons such as; ‘we need the latest devices to look smart’. Scandinavians don’t like contributing to the world’s trash and waste problem.
This video is perfect. New to your channel. I always wondered about the Scandinavian design, I'm fan a Sweden, and you explained everything clear and on point. Thank you. P.s. Do you plan to go back to Sweden?
Thank you so much, that is very kind! I don't have any plans to go back to Sweden anytime soon. Although my family is in Scandinavia, Sweden is not really my dream country to live in (although it has many benefits) :)
@@SagaJohanna Thank you very much for your reply Saga!🙏 . By any chance do you know in Sweden a 'vegan & exercise' club? I live in Costa Rica (lived in Japan too!), but I loooove Swedish culture, I have been vegan for 20 years (since I was a small kid), and I would love to meet vegan Swedish friends, at least online, my plans is to visit Sweden next year. I love exercise, traditional martial arts/zen, nature, spirituality and vegan food, I'm looking to meet like minded Swedish friends but I don't know where to start. Hope my questions is ok. Thank you in advance.
Carpeting OVER hardwood floors should be a felony.... I once lived in an apartment where the landlord had done just that. Baffling decision imo. I was like....but why? What is even wrong with you? And he was just like...idk, carpet is fancy right?
Informative and interesting. However, it is possible to have a beautiful, cozy environment without being quite so austere. The photos show rooms that are utterly impersonal. Very bare and cold looking. I prefer warmth. Still just an opinion
Yes, I don't think this decor is for everyone! :) But I think you'll like Swedish interior designer "Marie Olsson Nylander"! Her homes are super super cosy and warm.
Haha, love the shade thrown at those wearing leggings - so true! Put some actual clothes on people... Leggings also smell... unsanitary too. You think you can't smell yourself, but when you have a conga line of cats following you, that should be a hint...
I live in an apartment in the USA. According to you I won't be able to achieve the true Scandinavian look and decorating because I don't have a well built Scandinavian home! You are biased my dear. I already know how to decorate in the Scandinavian way. I was raised in a household which followed many of the same traditions you describe as being "Scandinavian" The apartment I am living in now was built with as many green and organic materials as possible. Although I think you are trying to help other people live and achieve this way of life, maybe not come across as being "Judgemental" to others because you think they don't know.
I really love your channel. Thank you for this. It is such a refreshing channel. I am interested in Scandinavian culture. The design and culture is really nice. I feel it is far better than what I grew up with in America.
5:38 How is any of this "scandinavian"? All of our cultures had interior decoration with an incredible amount of patterns and wood carvings. From the vikings to carl Larsson to...idk...freaking the average red and white cottage with wall hangings.
Not sure what you mean? I say not using patterns and I explain it in details, so please watch again. The idea of Scandinavian design is a modern concept and has nothing to do with historic accuracy. For example, the modern Danish chairs are the opposite of the Viking chairs ;)
* you have the same affliction as me: too nice * people don’t trust it * they just cannot believe some live by karma * you’re like a mirror * so i just wanted to say hi before i go *
"Most Swedish homes did not have a bathroom until the 1970's" I take it Sweden used to be a fairly poor country, yes? Young people today would not know it, and maybe not middle aged people either, but older people would remember.
From Ohio! Great job young lady! Would you consider doing a video about "The art of Swedish Death Cleaning?" I am getting into it and it is changing my life. Love to Sweden!
@@SagaJohanna Thank you for the reply! Actually found it just today and left a comment, it was fantastic! You are lovely and I am so glad you are just a bright spirit sharing w/the world. Blessings from Ohio.
I am an Indian and the day i came to know that this is Scandinavian decor i just love it unlike Indians who loves burst of colours and traditional decor. It quite hard to get Scandinavian style furnitures here though Ikea is the only source of such style. I even searched so many videos but indian interior designer doesn't have much knowledge about scandi decor . They somehow add too much colours and call it scandi. When i own my house , i think i have to do an year of reaserch to achieve the look i want 😂
Well. As a Swede, I don't exactly hate IKEA, but it's not my favourite. My hubby loves furniture from Italy and also lamps etc and our home is a combo of Scandinavian style with Italian. Sounds a bit weird perhaps but it works with our huge windows. We love out in the woods with nature and a lake. Love it! Greetings from Sweden 🌻🇸🇪
It is a matter of opinion. Everyone has a different threshold for visual clutter. For some, lots of things to look at is stimulating and energizing, for others (like me) it is distracting and draining. Personally, I love the Scandi style, but to each his own.
I think a big part of this is high quality used furniture. A few years ago I picked up some T.H. Brown chairs from my local recycling centre for less than$1000.
Most of these ideas work on the northern hemisphere but not outside of it. Your climate is cold, dark and unfiendly and thats why your interior resonates to the outside weather. If you live in a bright and warm country with only two or three Seasons - then the scandinavian design doesnt Look at all.
I’m new to your channel. This is exactly what I need at this point in my life as I’m moving to a new apartment. The video is very informative and thoughtful. I also watched some of your minimalism videos. Scandinavian and minimalism, both are very much needed for me now. Keep sharing more videos on Scandinavian design. Thank you!! 😊
