FINALLY got around to making a "short" video on my scanning workflow. Even with this video being over 11 minutes long, there's still so much I could talk about.
I have a ton of video ideas that I've been sitting on for a while now but I am always open for new ones. Soon I'll be covering the Hasselblad 500CM system, scanning, film shooting, location scouting, etc. However, if you have any suggestions for me or topics I should cover, I'm all ears!

This is great! I got a V600 a couple weeks ago, and I've been having trouble scanning my 120 negs.

I just purchased a V600 and the software to download is now Espon Scan 2, which is different than Epson Scan. I don't have a lot of these settings and I'm having trouble getting passed the first step.

Hey Ryan, sorry I'm just now replying to your comment but I know your pain. The Epson Scan 2 software is HORRIBLE and I purposely put off updating my Macbook because of it. Since I started doing these "Roll Reveal" episodes, I've since switched back to my PC for editing because it has the original Epson Scan software. The annoying thing is that there are a lot of settings (bit type, resolution, quality, etc) are all hidden behind other settings so there isn't really a "professional mode"

Well done and now in 1080p video, so much better to see mainly with the Hasselblad quality picture.

Great video. If you decide to print the photo, would you print using the digital scan or the negative? I wonder if there's any difference in terms of image quality.
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 4 года назад
The only color printing I've done over the years is via the digital scan. I really loved spending time in the darkroom printing B&W stuff whenever I was in college but color film, that's a whole different ball game. I would also really like to have some of my negatives professionally scanned to do some compare and contrasts versus the Epson. That's another limitation with the flatbed vs drum scanning is you need that higher resolution if you plan on doing larger prints.
@gunfisher4661
@gunfisher4661 2 года назад
Somewhere on the instruction choices it tells you that you have a choice for digital copy or for printing as the 2 preview screens look different. I also had no problem with laying neg`s on the glass ,don`t need to be perfect as photo shop will fix it with a click. I was doing 35 and 110 the same way sometimes as he , also noting they were 50+ old and then after a quick dip in photo shop i would print 4x6 test photos and they turned out quite well if you had ever seen the prints when they come back from kodak in the day you know you was on the road to right. The only difficulty I had was it would leave one or 2 neg`s with a green show but photo shop handles that too. I`m no expert yet but feeling better with the results. You print off the one that goes in the library it has the final work up. And still can be adjusted more yet a later date just so you can get moving along.

Hey Cory, i'm planning to buy a epson v600 for my photography too, i wanted to ask if you think it's a good scanner, and if it has holders for the 120 negatives Thanks
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 3 года назад
Hey Marc - for the price point, it's hard to beat. Right now there is a massive up rise in "DSLR/Mirrorless" scanning methods but I personally haven't had the chance to try it out yet. The worst part about the Epson is the software which is really why I made this video! In hopes of trying to at least shed some guidance

Hi Cory, nice video, very helpful. Thanks. I just want to ask... I noticed that your negatives are nice and flat, helping the whole direct-to-scanner-glass situation. Do you press them under books for a few days before you scan them, or are you just lucky that they're flat after developing? Thanks, I love your work.
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 3 года назад
Hey Luke, thanks for the love! Good eye, and yes sometimes I will flatten them out by putting them into film sleeves and then putting into a 3-ringed binder of other negatives. Another tip (if your lab will allow it) I have them cut the negatives whenever they're developing my roll. That seems to be the biggest quality of life upgrade instead of having them "roll" it into an envelope or something.

I'm surprised that you use the Digital Ice tool. When I got my Epson V6000 Photo scanner, I thought it would be a useful tool But every time I try to use it with B&W-negs, it just comes out grossly useless. Like some kind of "cool" effect or something. Perhaps something wrong with my scanner though. Without Digital Ice, it works fine. Do you know of what I might be doing incorrectly?
@AnaloguePhoto

Found out that "Digital Ice" only works with color negatives.

The question is.. Scanning of film is better than shutting directly in digital camera? Question is about aesthetic and not about the technique. Another question.. V600 is the same quality of V800 about medium format scanning? Thanks.

From my experience the auto exposure tool always overexposes when you select it with borders, if you only select the image, hit auto and then extend the area, you dont need to tune it so much afterwards
@eladbari
@eladbari 3 года назад
Yeah, but when you extend the bix- it will re-expose again, which will overexpose the image as you said
@EpicDubstepManiac
@EpicDubstepManiac 3 года назад
@@eladbari depends on what you use to scan, for me it only exposes after i hit auto or i change something manually, but changing borders in epson scan does not reexpose

With many images, Digital ICE will generate bizarre artifacts that are a lot worse than scattered dust specks. I'm not talking about Newton rings. I'm referring to pixel aberrations in high contrast areas of the image and pixel clumping when working with poorer quality film.

Hi Cory, really a good video, but I have a question: where can I get the rectangle shape glass to cover my negatives on the scanner, what is the thickness and or the dimensions? This is critical for me and I think it will help flatten the negatives.
@scottplumer3668
@scottplumer3668 2 года назад
A lot of hardware stores (not big box stores like Home Depot) cut glass for older windows. Cut a piece of cardboard to the size you need, then take it to the store and ask them to cut you a piece. If that doesn't work, buy a picture frame and take the glass out of it. Cut it at your own risk, however.
@thomasz1543

Thank you very much for the nice video! For me it would be very important to know how exactly you place the negative on the scanner glass. There are tons of videos and experts talking about film holders in order to get the film in the right focus height above the glass. In the Video, you seem to put it on another glass - or directly on the scanner glass ?
@Zetaphotography
@Zetaphotography 4 года назад
Yeah he didn't mention it not important
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 4 года назад
Honestly, I've never had issues with the focusing or anything. I actually would like to do a video on seeing if there is any differences in scanning quality if I used a film holder, glass, etc.
@chilecayenne
@chilecayenne 4 года назад
@@CoryMarrPhotography Also, placing the shiny surface of the film onto the shiny surface of the scanner glass, gives you Newton Rings...that's not something you can generally fix in post, that is a major reason to get your film out from physical contact with the scanner glass. For MF 120 film I got this holder, works great: www.betterscanning.com/scanning/models/v600.html Give that site a look!! HTH, CC

After all your efforts, why in the world would you choose .jpg as your file format. The correct choice is .tif at the scanning stage.

Thanks for a nice video. Question: How do we scan 120 color slides mounted in cardboard, plastic, and glass? I have all 3 types and used them in a projector.
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 4 года назад
Oh, that's a really good question. I think you should be able to just lay the slide film directly onto the glass, like how I scan my negatives. The biggest issue (I think) would be reflections from the plastic. If you do end up scanning them, let me know what you ended up doing and what worked best for you!
@clarification007
@clarification007 3 года назад
@@CoryMarrPhotography The other problem is the slight curve or wave on the card mount, a much flatter way is much better, for that the picture need to be out of the projection mount. (But that is another story)
@denniswilliams4789
@denniswilliams4789 3 года назад
Well, we agree on 48 bit , but that's about it. I will skip the entire list save that using Digital Ice is akin to putting vaseline on the camera lens. After using slow film in perfect light on a MF camera with sharp contrasty glass and employing archival processing it would be comically counterproductive to then blur the entire image when scanning to avoid the mind numbing chore of removing the dust and artifacts manually.
@gunfisher4661

Hey man, great video. Can't wait to see more!! Question: Have you ever tried to print using scans from your v600?
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 4 года назад
Yeah for sure! I used to do a decent amount art shows/fairs where I sold prints. The biggest my Canon printer could do was 13" on the widest side, so the largest prints I personally did was 12x12" and they turned out awesome!

Hi and thanks for the video. What's the max size of medium format film it can scan. I can't find in Internet. Would it work for 6 X 9?
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 4 года назад
I personally have not scanned 6x9 film in it, however, there's zero reason why it shouldn't. As long as its medium format (6 x whatever) the V600 will scan it. If you're doing 4x5, you'll need the Epson V850 since it has a wider scanning area compared to the cheaper V600.

Two things: 1. I wouldn't put the negatives flat on the glass as for alot of people they'll get Newton rings so get some Lomography digitiliza holders. 2. Turn off continuous auto correct mode in the settings. Use your marquee selection inside the negative and do your auto correct levels and then push the marquee tool outside of the negstive

I was scanning without Digital ICE. Man, it takes way longer now!
@CoryMarrPhotography
@CoryMarrPhotography 4 года назад
Yeah I used to not use it solely because of the wait time BUT after playing around with it, I thought it was worth it since I would find myself wasting so much time in photoshop clone stamping out dust specs whereas with the ICE, it cleans things up a lot faster. But, be warned, it doesn't always work. I've had really foggy/contrasty photos throw it off, it came out very blurry and washed out in the shadows. Had to go back to the old school way for those specific types of scans.

Why do you care to keep the film border information? There seems to be some strange obsession with this among photographers. I don't get it. I've never seen an image receive an award because the film borders were nice!
