I love the scene when Tony's in the bathtub watching TV. He says "Come on Pelicans". The birds are Flamingoes not Pelicans. That cracks me up every time.

Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg, THE Steven Spielberg, was the second-unit director for all of the action scenes during the climactic showdown at the end. De Palma, Coppola, Lucas, Scorsese and Spielberg were all very tight in those days.

Frank gave Tony a great advice, maybe the most underrated advice in cinema but Tony didn't listen and look what happen. His friends, his sister and him are dead. The people who want it all, don't last. They died in a brutal and violent way.

You gotta check out Carlito's Way (1993), also directed by Brian De Palma and also starring Al Pacino in the lead. While it's about completely different characters, it's sort of a spiritual sequel to Scarface. :) It starts off with former coke boss Carlito (Al Pacino) getting released from prison on a technicality, and he's determined to leave the criminal life behind him and start over ....

The irony in it all was that the one good act he did - not killing the family - was what ultimately led to his demise. NEVER become addicted to your own merchandise!

Frencis is 100% right, Al Pacino’s performance is STAGGERING here. He completely envelops this character where you believe this guy is REAL. The final scene with him and Gina is STUNNING. Great reaction video, I want more!

Fun and Cool Fact: GTA Vice City was inspired by Scarface. Everything from the setting, characters, story and music in that game took direct inspiration from Scarface. In fact the main character of Vice City (Tommy Vercetti) resembled Tony Montana in most ways.

One of my favorite movies. Tony was a complex character. The only redeeming quality of Tony was he valued family. He loved his sister and didn't want her to be with anyone in the drug trade. He wanted to protect her in his own way, which ended up killing her and Manny. He also refused to kill a mother and her kids, even if it meant he had to go to war with Sosa.

Classic! "Say hello to my little friend!" Scarface (1983) is also one of the greatest movie remakes ever made. The original film was made in 1932. It was set in Chicago and was inspired by real-life gangster Al Capone, sometimes known by the nickname "Scarface" due to scars he got in a knife fight when he was 20. The original film stars Paul Muni and was directed by Howard Hawks and was made before Hollywood began censoring itself. So that means that while it's an old film, it's really gritty in ways that might surprise you. So too with other classic gangster films from the pre-code era, like Little Caesar (1931), The Public Enemy (1931), and Taxi! (1932).

Everyone was scared of Tony, except his mother,how she talks to him,my favourite scene anyway.

One of the brilliant things about Al Pacino is that he is a natural linguist. Meaning he could pick up languages just by hearing it more than once. When he was asked to play the role as Tony Montana, he requested it all the extras and co-stars do their lines in Caribbean just so he can get the language barrier right. so in the scene where they are waiting for their target to come out, and the hitman is speaking cuban, Al Pacino already learned it hours before this scene.

I've been rewatching this movie for 30 years. Since the days it was on two VHS tapes at blockbuster. Y'all are an extremely cute couple. I really enjoyed this.

This movie was literally all About a Cuban who became a mobster but then wanted to run drugs across the world and he joined a cartel and will we all know what happens at the end dope as movie classic 💯💯

One of the best examples of "you can't be half a gangster", Tony's 1 selfless good deed was what got him killed.

I remember laughing at myself the day I got Scarface: The World is Yours (2006) on PlayStation 2, you start literally at the door to his office and I completely forgot about the guy with the shotgun and shades, forgot to turn around and get him first, really underrated game, alternate result obviously, you escape the mansion, lose everything and start from nothing with everyone against you.

As a Boomer born in 1964, I saw Scarface when it came out in the movies. I was blown away. I watched it with my college friends. A lot of things were predicated on people knowing the politics of 1955-1983. Castro replaced Batista, with Batista being a murdering bastard who even killed rich people. Castro came from a family of lawyers and in the beginning the Revolution was much better than life under Batista. Under a lot of strongmen, the strongmen become in love with authoritarianism... like Castro. The Mariel Boatlift happened in 1980 with Cubans being allowed to come to the U.S. under President Carter. Castro emptied his jails and sanitariums along with the rest of the now Mariel Refugees. Castro saw this as a win for him. He gets rid of a sizable number of dissidents, criminals and the mentally ill. That is what the American official means by Castro shitting all over us. The suspect refugees were sent to Liberty City to be processed and not just let into American society. When the guys walk into the bank with bags full of money, this was to show the audience (and people later on) that there were no bank secrecy guidelines in place where you had to fill out paperwork and your deposits were reported to the IRS if they were over $10,000. I worked for Chemical, now Chase bank back then and bank secrecy guidelines were not universal till about 1983-1984. A lot of people who are not millennials have no idea how it was in the late 1970s early 1980s. There were drug hits all over this country in big and small cities where the drug lords ruled. Tony shooting the Colombian drug dealer in broad daylight in front of witnesses was the norm. It was to show people not to mess with us and the cops can't protect you. Like with Mel many of the cops are dirty. Also, Sosa was based in Bolivia, one of the reasons why everyone wanted to cut out the Colombians as being too unreliable. This was a dig at Pablo Escobar and the Colombian drug trade. Tony was a rank narcissist and getting high on cocaine which makes you super paranoid was not a smart move at all. The use of the cocaine only made his narcissism worse. Maybe if Manolo had been more upfront, he might have lasted. In the book, Manolo (Manny) and Gina survive and leave before the big showdowns happened. They had Gina and Manny get killed to match with the older movie Scarface that there were no happy endings. I would have preferred that ending to Manny getting blown away and Gina riddled with bullets.

I remember the this film was released in the theaters. It got bad reviews from all the movie critics however, I thought ut was an amazing film in every way. Now it has a cult following and is rated as one of the most famous gangster films ever made.

Fun Fact: this movie flopped on release. Many saw it as just gratuitous drugs and violence. I disagree with that, it's not the next Citizen Kane, but it has a surprising amount of depth. Tony represents the last of a dying breed, that being the old gangsters of the early 20th century. He's principled, honest, and brave. You see this through his actions, he refuses to give Frank's money to the Colombians despite having never met the guy. He doesn't shoot the Toad (the Colombian guy with the chainsaw) in the back. Opting instead to go around and face him, to look him in the eye when he kills him. Most importantly he refuses to kill the mother and her kids. Sosa represents the savage thugs of the late 20th century. He has no principles beyond his pursuit of money, and he'll kill anyone, even women and children, in extremely cowardly ways like hiring a hitman and using a bomb. In the end, Tony faces death head on. And it's fitting that a man who makes a point of looking someone in the eye to kill them doesn't go down from a hail of bullets to his chest. But one shot in the back takes him down immediately.

You two are so good together. Thanks for the movie. It's really an American classic.

De Niro and Scorcese had been trying to make Scarface for years but Pacino and De Palma got there first. Carlitos Way is another excellent collaboration between Al Pacino and Brian De Palma.

I spent some time in Miami in the 80's for my company. It was insane, there were murders everyday and Cocaine was everywhere. That and most people spoke Spanish (I don't). I felt myself getting sucked in by everyone I knew living in the fast lane. I was very happy when the job was done and I got to go home.

This is a remake of a movie directed by Howard Hawks in 1932. Howard Hawks would go on to direct Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944) and The Big Sleep (1946).

Can't believe it took me over 20 yrs to just realize that also in The Godfather AL Pacino's character kills his sisters husband and his men have to restrain her and in GF he says " call a doctor" and in Scarface Chi Chi says " I gave her some pills".. man sisters have no luck with Al haha

I actually watched Godfather 3 as a teen BEFORE i ever watched 1 & 2 So i have quite a soft spot for it...

Castro got into hot water with the US soon after the revolution by nationalizing businesses including US businesses. Because of this the Soviet Union stepped in embraced Castro & offered economic aid & trade with Cuba. Fast forward to the 1970's & Castro sent boat loads of refugees to the US, many from its prisons & that is how the Tony types got there.

Finally, people who understand that this movie was a comedy. A serious version of this with the same director and Pacino is "Carlito's Way". No one is reacting to that; get the jump on the rest of the reactors!

If you love Pacino, I put his two best non-Godfather roles as: DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975, which also includes "Fredo" from Godfather, playing a completely different type of character. Fantastic movie, it's a true story about a bank robbery) And DONNIE BRASCO (1996 - with Johnny Depp, another mob movie but he plays a totally different type of character. Great movie.) Ok, I'm going to watch the reaction now!

Great reaction to one of my favorite movies. The original version from the early 30s is great too. It's about bootlegging instead of drugs. Paul Muni was an awesome Scarface. Much of the story is basically the same. It's very violent and bullet-riddled for its time.

More curiosities about the film: 1) The hat. Tony and Elvira's hat scene in the Cadillac was improvised by Al Pacino. Michelle Pfeiffer knew how to continue acting and Brian de Palma liked it. In addition to being comical, it adds an important element, such as the progressive rapprochement between Elvira and Tony. It's also the only time Elvira laughs in the entire movie. 2) "Yeyo". The nickname used for cocaine ("yeyo") was a vocalization error by Al Pacino learning his texts in Spanish. De Palma liked the result and all the characters use the term to refer to cocaine in the entire movie. 3) Michelle Pfeiffer. Michelle Pfeiffer (25 yo in 1983) was an unknown when she filmed the film. I had only done Grease 2 (1982) as main role before Scarface. 4) Tom Cruise (21 yo in 1983) and Bruce Willis (28) auditioned for the role of Tony Montana. Al Pacino was 43 in 1983, despite Tony Montana is less than 30 years old. 5) Blink-182. The Californian pop-punk band Blink-182 refers to the number of times the word "fuck" is said in the film. 6) Miami. Despite appearing to be about Miami, the film was filmed in Los Angeles. 7) Addiction. The screenwriter, Oliver Stone, was addicted to cocaine when he wrote the script. 8) Steven Spielberg. The final part of the film (the shooting at Montana's house) was shot by Steven Spielberg.

The Blimp shot reminded me of flying out of Miami - with the Blimp flying below us over Downtown. I remember the tent city beneath the expressway exchange for the Cuban 'boat people'. When I found out this was a 'remake', it helped me start a journey of watching the original releases of several movies I never knew were remakes. Cape Fear, The Taking of Pelham 123 are other good examples.

There's a saying in my country (I don't know if there is a similar one in other languages) whose translation goes like this: "No good deed comes without punishment". This doesn't mean that you shall not behave good because that leaves you to suffering, not at all. It means that you should act carefully because even the things you do with the best of intentions has unforeseen consequences. And yet, I found curious that Antonio's only good deed in the entire movie (not killing the kids) was actually the one that eventually causes his dead. If him had kill the kids, he would be free from the accusations and keep ruling his empire, making it even bigger. He will be alone and rotten on the inside of course, but alive after all. ..... Don't know, I'm probably overthinking things here, but to me at least, feels like they took that saying and, in a very twisted way, try to make it literal.....
