A tier ranking of the top 25 scariest books ever written (according to Barnes & Noble). This tier ranking represents my opinions, as controversial as they may be. If you disagree, which I'm sure you will, please let me know how you feel in the comment section. I'm always curious to hear about someone else's experience and what they managed to takeaway from books I've read and enjoyed (or otherwise). #booktube #booktok #reading #scary #horrortube

I hate when I forget to breathe. I don't think Darcy Coates will be your thing. Most of her books have ghosts. Hendrix is def. silly horror, but he can really write a scary scene that lives with me, even when I don't like the book as a whole. I read the exorcist a few months ago, and was surprised that the exorcism is a last resort after MANY medical tests/treatments. The priest refuses to do it for a very long time, stating that they are pretty much bullshit. The Ring is one book I wish I had DNF'd. You read about men treating women (and wives) like shit, and hope they payoff will be that they meet a horrific death. I couldn't believe they made a hit movie from that pile of shit. Great video! sorry for such a long comment

Good points. Thanks. I think I'm being talked out of Darcey Coates by you and another commentor who said she was YA. I'll pass. And I'm sorry to hear that The Ring didn't work on you at all. Sounds like it wouldn't work on me either. I have no interest in reading about men treating women badly, unless they get their just deserts (and even then I'm not too keen to read it). Hmm...

@@Michael_Wertenberg I never want to sway someone from reading something they are interested in. After I read it, I watched the american version of the movie and they had made a LOT of changes. The main characters were completely different, which is why it worked for audiences.

"Don't Forget To Breath!" 🤣🤣Love this! I really need to read Catriona Ward, perhaps after I finish The Ritual this month. The Troop did not work for me. I found the body horror very repetitive. Exquisite Corpse is high priority for me, I really enjoyed Lost Souls. I highly recommend Let The Right One In, it is about so much more than "vampires" and the horror works on so many levels. You know my feeling for The Haunting of Hill House. 😂 Great ranking, except The Shining! 🤣🤣Happy you enjoyed Dr Sleep, was a great novel. Would love to see a King ranking sometime, that would be fun. 😀

Yes! Catriona Ward! Not sure if it's because I don't have a lot of friends who read horror, but she is not as well known as I'd hoped. So good!

Yes! I'm surprised she isn't more popular. Maybe because she writes for adults. But her books do always get award consideration (Bram Stoker, August Derleth, Shirley jackson awards)

I didn't care for The Only Good Indians, but I loved The Indian Lake Trilogy. SGJ's writing style is definitely not for everyone. I actually liked Nothing but Blackened Teeth. I had to look up the definitions of some words and do some research into Japanese folklore to appreciate it, but it would likely not work for anyone who does not enjoy ghosts or superstitious elements in their literature. I've skipped Hidden Pictures because I've heard similar things about the propaganda issue. I live in the United States, so I get enough of that shit every day. I could say more, but my comment is getting too long🤣 Great video, and I love your tier titles. Wait! I'm back. Again, how dare you with Frankenstein! Okay, I'm gone again.

The fire hose in "The Shining" wasn't nearly as ludicrous as the hedge animals. Shown in all their absurdity in the TV movie. Kubrick was right in changing them to a hedge maze. I think the point of the hose was that it played into Danny's fear of fire extinguishers. Still, what's wrong in "The Shining" is outweighed by what is RIGHT in it. Just one example was at the end when Hallorann goes into the shed to get blankets and is almost "lost" to the hotel as he starts contemplating murdering Danny and Wendy. For me the best scene of many in the book.

Good points! Thanks. I don't remember the scene with the blankers, but I'll trust you on it. I do remember the scene where we spend the telegraphed 2 or 3 pages learning about the maintenance of the boiler. Hmm, I wonder how this book will end.

The Ring novel is ok. But the original Japanese movie Ringu is fantastic. Saw it years ago and it still gives me nightmares. One of the few instances of the movie being better than the book. Don’t agree on Frankenstein or The Exorcist, but you sold me on The Troop and Little Eve. Great vid. 👍

Omg, read Monstrilio -- it's fantastic! However, it is more of a creepy/scary lit book than a horror book, I think. It was a 5-star read for me, so, well worth the time -- one of my favorite books this year. 💚

Fun video sir! Great work. I just started Little Eve last night based on your recommendation. I can already tell it has great potential. She's a fine writer. Also, I would add to Steven Seagal's resume that he is the most reviled host of Saturday Night Live of all time, as told by castmembers. I recommend you check out a video on the subject. It's a hoot! Cheers!

Since we last Spoke : I'm thinking it's in the "horror" category because it's such a horribly written book. Stephen King: I finally read *IT* and *IT'S* too long by 600pgs. Difference of opinion category: I DNF'd The Reddening. Love the channel.

I just recently read the Exorcist and while I didn’t think it was scary, I did find it very good. It really is a character study of the priest and,to a lesser extent, the mom. I think if you like books that explore character struggles and motivations you will like it. If you go into it to be scared you will hate it. Since you and I tend to have very similar tastes in books (although I like an occasional ghost story), I think you might actually like The Exorcist. Although I could totally be wrong about that! Who can tell! 😂

Yeah, the Catriona Ward book sounds good - I've always been a sucker for a cult story. Some of my most satisfying reads have had this particular theme. The sequel to Poe's Usher story sounds intriguing as well, although, like you, I seriously doubt this story can come close to matching the claustrophobic atmosphere of the original. "Fall of the House of Usher," & "Masque of the Red Death", are my two favorite stories by Poe. Preachy books tend to put me off as well - for me, the story always comes first, not the soap box. The last truly horrifying book I've read was "Greely's Cove", by John Gideon, which has a slow, gradually escalating pace, & a somber, unsympathetic feel to it - it concerns horrors such as strange pregnancies, mind control, psychics, sacrifices, occult sciences, a nasty kid, supernaturally created zombies, which I've always preferred to the too-easy "plague" zombies, & it has one long gross out scene which might put a lot of people off - well, it is a horror novel, but that particular scene does leave a bad taste in one's mouth - & a spectacular ending. Definitely worth reading, IMO, & it led me to get his two other horror novels, "Golden Eyes", & "Red Ball", which is also known as "KIndred".
