I found some mistakes or mispronunciations in this video, the ones I had the most trouble with are: 1) The Mackinac Bridge is pronounce Ma-kuh-naa, I have driven over this bridge several times and have enjoyed the sound of my tires on the steel deck. 2) The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is in Virginia NOT Maryland as it crosses the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The tunnel portion is so ships can enter and exit the bay. The thrumming of a ships propeller is a sound you don't forget as you go through the tunnel. There is a Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Gov. William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge) in Maryland, but there are no tunnels as far as any maps or the state show.

@@kathrinelaws1359, I know what the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is as I also traveled through it on U.S. 13. It travels from the Little Creek/Norfolk area to the Eastern Peninsula of Virginia. My father was stationed at the D&S Piers at Norfolk Naval Station, and my Scout troop went camping at Savage Neck Dunes Nature Preserve so we could assist in cleaning up the area and we traveled from Virginia Beach where my troop was based. Some of the scouts would see who could hold their breath through each tunnel section.

The Chesapeak Bay Bridge in Annapolis, MD has always terrified me. I will go the long way around to avoid that Bridge! It used to have very low side railings and you could see the water through the road when you drove. I think they've changed it now. It also doesn't help that a truck was blown off the bridge from heavy winds not too long ago.

Funny how different people react differently. I love that bridge, and was disappointed when they reinforced the sides so you can no longer see the water as you drive. You have two bridges confused: the Chesapeake Bay bridge runs as you say between the western and eastern shores of Maryland. I have driven it, and even at night, sometimes in the wind, it is not scary, unless you are a real scardy cat. You talk about the tunnel in the bridge, that is not this bridge, that is the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel. That bridge runs from the lower tip of Delmarva (in Virginia) across to the Virginia Beach, Virginia area. The trip on this bridge is rather cool, sometimes you are above the Chesapeake other times you are below it.

#9 Correction. The narrator has her bridges confused. There are 2 bridges in Maryland called Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The first is as the narrator states connects Maryland's Eastern Shore and Western Shore (Annapolis to Kent Island). The narrator claims this bridge has an underwater tunnel. The Bay Bridge does NOT have a tunnel. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, as the name suggests, has the underwater tunnel. It spans across the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach , Va to Cape Charles, Va.

@izzonj
@izzonj 5 лет назад
They confused the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland, near Annapolis, with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, in Virginia, at the mouth of the Chesapeake. They showed pictures of the former, and it is a scary bridge - very high, takes a turn in mid air, and it just looks rickety. The first time I went over it was foggy, and up top, looking down on the fog, we could see the top of a Navy vessel coming under the bridge. They have signs as you approach saying that they have people to drive you and your car for you, because every day they get people white knuckling and just stopping in the middle of the thing. It does NOT have an underwater tunnel section. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia has a long causeway over water, a tunnel between two artificial islands and a tall span over a shipping lane. The tunnel is for some of the large ships that don't fit under the tunnel. Some can only pass over the tunnel section at high tide.
@denisesudell2538
@denisesudell2538 2 года назад
You’re right that the bridge shown in the video is the Bay Bridge, but I drive it regularly, and I don’t agree that it looks rickety. In fact, I did the annual bridge walk one year and got a close look at the bridge. It’s quite sturdy, although I think it was wise of them to reinforce the side rails.

I used to not be scared of bridges... Now I am. In 2007 one of our major bridges, the 35W bridge in Minnesota, collapsed. After the collapse there was more attention focused on bridge safety and repair. Minnesota has over 1200 bridges that are deemed structurally deficient. We learned that a large amount of bridges were unsafe, some bridges weren't monitored/repaired ever, the funding for urgent bridge repairs or replacement bridges is hard to find. What is scary is that Minnesota ranked 40th in the country for the percentage of bridges deemed to be deficit... So we are one of the best states for "safe" bridges. So yes, bridges are scary to me.

We, in Michigan, also have an annual Bridge Walk. Monday, Labor Day morning, the bridge is closed to through traffic and you can walk the entire span. Up to 100,000 people do it. If you want to be scared,, the two center lanes are a steel grid to relieve wind pressure. The grid squares are quite wide,, about 2.2 inches, 6 cm, . You can look down the 200 feet directly beneath you to the water as you walk. The only year that I know of that the Bridge walk was cancelled, it was cancelled because of high winds, 25 to 30 knots? Mostly at your back. The Bridge Walk began as usual at exactly 7AM, and 20 minutes later it was closed. The bridge was swaying laterally so rapidly and so far that if you stopped, you were immediately knocked down, your feet taken sideways out from under you. However,, as long as you continued to walk,,, and laughing,, not look down,, you felt like it was a drunk walk. Don't look down,, it was disconcerting to see the bridge going sideways under your feet, and don't stop walking. At the center of the mainspan, the bridge was shifting laterally almost a full 8 feet ,but rather slowly, gracefully, 10 or 12 second period? And on a 3,800 foot mainspan,,, 8 feet is really nothing. In a car you would never notice. It was a fun walk.

That Kuandinsky bridge is not a wooden bridge, it’s what used to be known as a box girder bridge and it was not built for vehicles. It was a railroad bridge that was abandoned when the newer truss bridge in the background was built to carry heavier rail traffic. The wood on top is simply the old bridge ties that the rails were fastened to. Nobody is ever going to maintain that bridge-it’s been abandoned.
