Scarlatti Sonata in B minor K.27 at 3 Tempos - FAST, MODERATE & SLOW

⬇READ MORE BELOW⬇ In this video I play Scarlatti's Sonata K.27 three times at three different tempos, fast, moderate and slow.
I personally enjoy playing and listening to K.27 at all these three tempos equally. At a fast tempo the dynamics can be more assertive and matter of fact, at a slow tempo, light and lyrical.

The slow tempo allows the Spanish dance mood to reveal itself. Lovely.

It is the correct speed as indicated both by character and by the "Allegro", the other speeds would be presto and prestissimo respectively.

This is a great harpsichord sonata by Scarlatti. My favourite recording is by Marcelle Meyer in 1954 in Paris. Despite the recording limitations of the time she captures the magic of this piece on the piano.

Thank you for this video! It's one of my favorite piano works by Scarlatti and it's interesting to hear different tempos. I tend to play it somewhere between the slow and moderate, depending on my mood that day! Great playing. :)

Congratulations, very beautiful rendition(s) ! You make it seem so easy to be fully convincent on 3 different tempi ! Not easy at all , a " tour de force " ! I confess I prefer the slower version...and I adopt it - I feel closer to the Gilels conception here than Michelangeli's ...besides it allows some extra miliseconds to enjoy the niceties of this lovely piece ...My teacher of clavichord and Early Music interpretation ( no other than M S Kastner ) always told us to bear in mind that the concept of speed of past centuries has nothing to do what we take for granted nowadays , namely concerning speed records ! It is easy to prove : may someone attempt the piece on a harpsichord at the tempo suggested first and then try to convince me seriously that such chaos was intended by good old Domenico !

As played here it may make sense to play that fast, but in this piece you're supposed to be changing your hands in the long arpeggios, so the normal/slow speed makes more sense.

Ver nice and interesting. Usually I prefer slower interpretations, but somehow here with the fast tempo the Sonata obtains such an incredible momentum und such pure, crystaline form, this goes a bit lost in the slower tempi. Also my feeling ist that the slower invites more variations in the tempo, which is not necesarilly true to this music, IMHO. The fast is my favourite, in this case! Thanks. Playing is great, and the piano seems to be an amazing, very well balanced instrument; somehow it sits exactly where I hear the piano: not to bassy. not too strident. Very very fine!

I prefer the slow or moderate tempo, close to Scott Ross' in his records , far more sensitive than fast tempo. Very nice rendition. The latter sounds like a 33t record tuned on 78t ... or a competitive examination for typists. Michelangeli liked that version... Many thanks from France !!

Excellent performances all of them. I much prefer the quicker tempo. I'm not sure about the pedalling though, I like to hear the wonderful descending melodic line and I think this can only be brought out with a more full pedal (I like Jack Gibbon's version also Michelangeli of course.

Moderate tempo does it for me. It's perfect, in my opinion. Slow is good as well, but a bit too sluggish. Fast is way too fast.

I’m skeptical of the fingerings you use for the intro passage. I think some of the legato is being sacrificed for playability, perhaps.
