Do you know any revolution without scars? It's the nature of all revolution. If people died as consequences of that. Well, too bad. Ghana overall is better off today than summer 1978 when l visited Accra from Abidjan.
It was a power play. That moment was a time to revenge some rifts that existed among people. Many of the actors have regretted their actions and role they played in June 4. In fact June 4 is a mutiny
Kotoka was the hand that swung the hammer. Afrifa was just the nail. Neither of the two had the brawn or acumen to assume power in the full capacity of Head of State. So they put up a front in the form General Ankrah. He was their patsy. Everyone knew that. May he rest in peace.
Ankrah wasnt a key player just like not much is known about this man when the coups are mentioned even though he did all the hard work. Ankrah was just taking orders massa
These coup actors set back Ghana's development. They were out witted by a fox in their mist. They should literally record their memoirs for posterity. A book should be written. Have all written records in their possession secured/archived in libraries around the world.
Calling on Rawlings to acquiesce to an independent investigation is akin to asking a person with a big oozing sore on the leg to prepare water for dressing the sore. It is only a fool that will go and over boil water to be poured into his/her gaping sore.
Mr Acquah,I wish you could invite Peter Tasiri, the chief executioner of the generals in June 1979 to furnish you with in-depth information why they didn't execute only okatakyie afrifa who was their main target but, wasted Bob Kotei,Roger Felli,Yaw Boakye,Joy Amedume, and Kwaku Utuka? I know they have been vindicated though dead. I remember watching on my grandpa's black and white television at dansoman estates, early in the morning of June 16, 1979, the remains of generals acheanpong and utuka on the stakes at teshie firing range. Well, God knows why He allowed those executions.
Listening to this man Rawlings supporters will realize that he was and will not be a hero in the eyes of Ghanaians Very evil man He will never never Rest In Peace
You see,it's over 40 years now but I still have the picture of the executed acheanpong and utuka appearing every now and then as if,it occured only yesterday. I always put myself in the shoes of their children. Anyway,my father was whipped severely for refusing to look at "3y3 hann,3y3 kanea"
the perpetrators of June 4th ie Major Boakye Gyan and Baah did not have any meeting minds with Rawlings. They should have critically analysed who Rawlings was before they freed him. Thier agenda to Revolt was clearly different from that of Rawlings. If they had done thier homework well, the nation at the time will not be plunged into chaos. Rawlings was a hungry man for power who went on air to incite soldiers etc to take arms ...fight the officers and of cos we all know the ripple effects, civilians etc were affected. I dont blame ppl who adore Rawlings afterall he knew how to appeal and appease the masses. But today have we really gained as a nation?
Unfortunately we all can see today that people died in vain. The corruption in Ghana is even worse today than it was when people called for those barbaric executions. The gulf between the poor and the rich keep widening to our very shame and threat of this "banana republic."
The AFRC AND PNDC committed atrocious crimes, large in scale, deadly in intent and appalling in their consequences. Former heads of states of other countries have ended up at the ICC for lesser crimes. Instituting the indemnity clause speaks for itself.
I am enjoying these interviews and documentaries into the history of Ghana. There are a lot of lessons to be learnt from individual point to nationalistic view. The many actors, participants and observers have all come out to express dissatisfaction, remorse, apologies etc. I am of the firm belief that some people died uselessly to the advantage of others and these beneficiaries are still clamouring for power and recognition. Whoever is reading this piece should not make a mistake to sacrifice his blood for any thirsty power seeking person.
You were part of the injustices that were committed against the good people of Ghana. In the interview, you were trying to run away from it. God will judge you very well.
But you people brought him, you imposed him on Ghanaians if you the armed men who brought him were not brave enough to to take him back what do you want we unarmed men to do?
Very intelligent man a scholar and a gentleman He is honorable man He tell it as it’s Rawlings cannot never never be a hero or a savior for Ghanaians His supporters will now realize how awful he was Someone safe his life but chose to execute people He will never never Rest In Peace The children never never had a daddy along growing up
@@nboateng I agree that you 💯 I use to hold JJ in high regards but after finding out the real truth about Ghana 🇬🇭 history and all that really take place I look at him differently now ..he is no hero
Attempt to kill him, yet he survived for nearly 20yrs, so? Don’t forget he lived n stayed in Ghana, after his term of office n they never killed him?😹😹😹😹
Me too in the military there is a strict structure and must be fallowed any soldier who breaks command to effect in anything is not fit to be called a soldier. Ridà is a good example a good soldier he was strong to stick to command even though he found it not comfortable that is strength
Mr Acquah, there's an other rank who can give you an honest account, he's in the UK but he won't talk, he was driving Odartey Wellington and drove Rawlings later..... There are people who still know more especially on the SMC side who might not talk...
Ghanian writers and historians should rally round the remaining officers like Capt. Baah Achamfour and Major Rida, do thorough biography on them, and their sides to the occurrences of 4th June, 1979. For posterity...
The name of Major Boaky Gyang be added for those to be interviewed thoroughly to get a proper perspective on the sides and occurrences of 4 the June, 1979...
@@ebifemowei4211 Boakye Gyan in one of his interview states that he ordered the soldier to chase Odartey Wellington out of the police station when he learnt that he was inside there because he is the opponent of the uprising. That makes me to believe that Boakye Gyane must have been the one that ordered the junior officers to eliminate General Odartey Wellington.
Hold on.. Rawlings took millions from Abacha..so what?.. was is a Bribe...was it Embezzlement funds...so if Zuma gives Nana Addo $5m dollars Nana os guilty?? ??
@Baca - Ck I was in Accra in summer 1978. Crossing the border from ivory coast. I cannot begin to tell you how destitute Ghana was. This blood shed was necessary cleansing of Ghana and the rot of Ghanaian society. BTW, am Guinnean by birth who grows up in Paris.
@@jkoanana listen, l was in Accra in August 1978 to celebrate my birthday, invited by my dear friend Doris, who was studying in Paris also. The shock l had when l saw Accra and the living conditions of people will stay with me for the rest of my life. We could not even find toothpaste or bathing soap. We have to go to some lousy government run store where we could buy whatever we wanted with French franc and west Germany Deutsche mark. Goodness me, this was the black star of Africa l grew up admiring as young kid in Guinea Conakry. Nothing BTW, justified the killing of fellow humans being, but the rot in Ghana was such, it was inevitable. Regrettably l must add that it was necessary evil. Compare Ghana today to your neighboring countries who didn't went trough such upheaval. C'est du n'importe quoi dans ces pays, malheuresement. If you think Ghana of 1978 is the same as Ghana of summer 2020, you are not living on mother earth. Ghanaian and Ghana are much better off today in so many ways than 40 years ago.
@@petitben5240 Thanks for your explanation. It was only 20 years after independence. The first president tried buy building factories and at the same time used Ghana's money helping other African countries to find independence all because he wanted African unity and possibly the president of Africa. The French African countries warned him he almost bankrupted Ghana and subsequently he overthrown. After 1979, the hardship continues, there were several coup attempts as a result of that. Until in the early 90s cheap Chinese goods came to our rescue. The administration he overthrown did well in farming. Now, we import rice, maize and frozen meat and fish. He is now 3rd Ghana's richest man.
If Cpt. Baah Achamfour claims he only became a member of AFRC on the 19th June 1979, then how does he also claim that he was arrested on the eve of 4th June 1979, i.e. 3rd June 1979, for masterminding or spearheading the coup d'etat or "govt" takeover in the name of a revolution, where he is even seen & deemed the leader or preferred leader of AFRC. Something does not add up well in his account or ring properly in his narrative and recount of the events & occurences in that brazen dastard so-called revolution era of the AFRC.
Baah was asked by Peter Tasiri and co to lead them for coup. He sacked them but they came back. The day before June 4th he was arrested. Baah escaped and commanded the boys to over come the senior officers. JJ was in jail and Boakye Gyan was in a hide out with Nana Konadu. Baah single handedly led and commanded the junior officers and won. The boys rescued Rawlings on June 4th whom instead of reporting himself to Baah at the 5 battalion went straight to broadcasting and introduced himself as leader of June 4th.
He was the only commander to cease fire on June 4th. June 4th is different from AFRC. June 4th was the fight between senior and junior officers. AFRC took power at the castle.
It takes the bold Rawlings to clean the house and handed over the democracy we're in now. The system and the environment supported it then... today generation has no idea what went on and felt military intervention was unnecessary
@@vidaburgess9401 because of their wealth? That's all you learned from your skewed history. Kwasia. JJ was only mean to corrupt people. Remember JJ never had even one foreign bank account. He was busy developing Ghana extending electricity to most towns in Ghana. But this fraud of a UK returnee says JJ has done nothing. It's unfortunate. Only kids would fall for his shenaniganism.
@Inner Worlds l was in Ghana for your information, from July to August 1978 , l actually had my birthday August4th that year with my then girlfriend Doris a Ghanaian by birth who still reside in Paris and work for UNESCO. She invited me to Ghana to visit her parents in Accra and others relatives in Kumasi and Takoradi. I still know to this day how to eat fufu and gare. Btw, me and Doris were both students at université Dauphine , in Paris. I love Ghana and Ghanaian a lot, even though I find them ethnocentric and selfish sometimes. Also as Guinean by birth, my parents generations owe huge debt of gratitude to Ghanaian people and the late Dr. Nkrumah. It’s Ghana who sponsored Guinea admission to the United Nations and who can forget the 66 millions dollars loan to Guinea soon after our independence in 1958. Akwaba, brother. .
@Inner Worlds any loss of life under any circumstances is awful. I understand how some Ghanaian were asking for blood to flow in those violent days. I cannot begin to tell you, brother, the shock and sadness l had that summer when We landed in Accra via Abidjan. Even though, Doris had warned me about how life was tough for ordinary Ghanaian, nothing prepared me for what l saw that summer. Ghana was supposed to be the leading light for other African countries. Remember, when France wanted to block Guinea admission to the UN, it was Ghana diplomacy that strong arms the other UN general assembly members to impose Guinea admission despite France whining about it. To see that black star run to the ground because of greed and incompetence was really disheartening. But as you said, nothing justifies the killing of Ghanaian in the hands of other Ghanaian under any circumstances. Bless you, brother. Please be well and safe. May God bless Ghana and Ghanaian.
Mr Acquah what you have to realise is Major Rida wasn't telling you the entire truth...... Some of us know him very well, I was a kid but remember the gunshots everywhere from about 4am, our school for es primary had hundreds of gunshots in it until recently..... The fighting was real all through the day until about 4pm in the afternoon and for about 3 to 4 days there were still sporadic gunshots across Arakan. Listen to this man and ignore Major Rida wai
These AFRC members who were desperate for wealth, took money from the government and travelled abroad, now claim Jerry who stayed to selflessly built the Country without enriching himself didn’t deserve any credit. Even, America that is credited as the longest and most stable democracy in the world has also gone through a period of revolution. Had Jerry who was an Air-force pilot then travelled to seek greener pastures or become Air-force member in the US or UK, he’ll been greatly successful than becoming Head of State in Ghana.
This Man is little boy in the old man skin; does he think he and all the people who work in all revolutionary era and Ghana will enjoy peace. those who think about themselves and do not want Ghana to have peace are propagating this: I am aware and we were told Limann regime gave them some amount of money and sponsor some some of them abroad. Again some of them also sent mesenaries to stage another coup to no avail we stayed in this country under carfew for almost 5years because of their several plots, now they came to meet the nation in peace and they still want to plank the country in darkness is a shame and Carlos.
@@samuelnkegbe3428 THANK YOU! They wanted Ghana to be a village where it can be spillaged without remedy. Rawlings held Ghana together. Now they're back spewing nonsense paid for by certain ENEMIES of the State.
Each time I watch this interview I get angry at the host. He has no background of what went on hence the infantile line of questioning. Very painful to watch. He miss quotes Maj Rida and can’t even point out the contradictions in these criminals stories.

Rawlings did not betray him. He outsmarted him. They wanted to use Rawlings leadership quality to steal from the country but Rawlings refused. Hence the hatred towards Rawlings.
