The local Poundland (called Dealz on the Isle of Man) had some portable power units that house an Amazon Echo unit so you can make it portable. They claim to contain a 10,000mAh cell, so I thought I'd get one for the £5 they were selling them at to check out the cell capacity.
I'm guessing that they are probably discontinued stock to be sold for £5 given the complexity of the circuitry inside.
I did spend a LOT of time trying to fathom out the circuitry, but it's surprisingly complex due to the way it can charge the 8.4V lithium cell from a USB input with a boost converter or the original power supply with a buck converter. The circuit board is three layer which made tracing things a lot harder. I was actually thinking how useful the soft contact brush mentioned by Mike of mikeselectricstuff would be for hunting down ends of tracks.
I couldn't quite fathom the apparent dual boost circuit for the output, unless I'm just missing some useful detail.
The lithium battery is a stack of two cells with a protection board. Not a balancing board, just protection. I guess it relies on the cells being charged to a similar level for most of the item's useful working life.
The twin-stack cell accepted a charge of 10,348mAh which is a good result. It does mean that in its original form it was actually a 5000mAh 8.4V battery.

Glue doesn't like paint thinner. Or Goo-Gone (apparently). Hard-setting glues used in clamshells can be weakened with a solvent which can be sparingly applied in th seams with a hypodermic(-ish) needle. As for Captan (?) tape cutting, try a stitch-ripper. You can blunt the sharpish pokey point, or shorten it, using a rotary tool, and still retain the sickle-like blade that does the actual cutting.

I honestly thought I just had bad indigestion, and ignored it until the next day, when I found that it hurt too much to breathe and talking was out of the question. The tabs from the batteries are spot welded onto small metal plates, these are soldered onto the battery management PCB, so if you heat up the plate with a soldering iron that will come off the board meaning that you don't have to cut the battery tabs. Also if you buy a battery management PCB off eBay it often comes with these plates already soldered on, just waiting for the battery tabs to be spot welded on.

Last year I bid on a lot of CB Radios, you see my Brother-in-law and I used to camp together and we used CB's when we were on road trips to keep in contact. (Sadly he passed away last Christmas and my sister followed on Easter) Well the lot had a nice mobile for my RV, and two hand held. One was a 40 channel with built in rechargeable, the other a 4 channel missing it's battery pack. So being a follower of Big Clive, I had the brilliant idea of sticking 3 of these flat pack batteries together like you did these 2 and mounting them inside the battery pack area. Worked like a charm and when the grandson's came for a visit, I let them loose in town with the CB'S to play what ever they play now days with radios. Well that was OK and they both came back with antenna's intact an amazing feat on it's own accord. What I failed to do was to turn off the radios when I put them away. Well a week or so later, I opened the back of the one with my home made battery pack and found them swollen to the point that they were about to burst. I pulled them from the radio and disposed of them. Back to the drawing board, I think I will mount an 18650 triple battery case on the outside of the radio and use them for that set, removing the batteries when not in use.

Hey Clive, just wanted to say thanks for all your solar light and 18650 videos. Because of everything ive learned I was able to modify the big solar light I have on the side of my house to make it so I can manually charge it with a USB power bank/USB Charger via a TP4056 Charging/Protection Board, I connected a long enough 22AWG wire so that I could charge it from the ground instead of always having to take the light off the wall which always requires a ladder to do. In addition to that I was also able to change the battery as I found the quick connect adapter the original battery uses on Amazon. Because of all this i'll probably try modifying some other solar lights I have so they can also be more useful during the Winter. So thanks again and thanks to @Siana Gearz for pointing me in the direction of the board.

if you want to split those cells i find isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol usually dissolves the glue they use on that kind of thing without damaging the cells just taking the ink off, don't get the part with the terminals into the alcohol they're not as well sealed there sometimes. to disconnect the terminals from the pcb if you have a hot iron and a bunch of solder you can usually desolder the spot welded tab from the pcb without putting much heat into the pack, this leaves you with a lot more tab to work with

Hi Clive, A few notes for you on lipo pouch cells: As you've worked out the cells were 5Ah each, stacked in series to give 8.4V 5Ah battery. If they are in parallel they are a 4.2V 10Ah battery.... Never exceed 4.2V when charging or less than 2.5V when discharging (a very short term excursion of +/- 0.05V is acceptable, maybe 5 seconds). The 100% SoC voltage will relax to something between 4.12 and 4.18V. Typically the charging profile is something like constant current (CC) at 1C (C being the equivalent current proportional to capacity - in this case for 1 cell 5amps) until 4.2 volts is reached, then a constant voltage (CV) charge until the current drops to 0.1C. The cell is then considered fully charged. It may take a number of hours to relax from 4.2V to its final value. NEVER charge below 0degC or above 60degC. The Open Circuit Voltage is closely linked to cell temperature, normal lab conditions are assumed on all datasheet values, but you could easily see up to 0.1V variation between 0 and 60degC. If the cell has been exposed to >4.35V or

Thanks for the information on this, Clive. My local Poundland had them in stock, so I bought 2. Great for powering 12V devices, and I can fill the unit with more Li-ion cells ex supermarket scrap bins which will plug in to the base unit for greater capacity. Poundland also have two units for 5V in and out smart devices, but they don't look anywhere as interesting, and have either 8Ah or 10Ah cells. Possible good at £5, though. I'm hoping I can throw some more light on the output up converter to make a variable power supply. Presumably one needs to be careful of the control electronics which may be monitoring voltages, but perhaps a few resistor value changes may allow the o/p volts to change. Tony
@TonyAbbey
@TonyAbbey 4 года назад
It would be nice to add a photo or two here, but can't do, so have to use words. I removed R3 - 82K resistor at top of voltage divider which sets the o/p voltage, and connected a 50K multi turn pot via a 39K resistor to the R3 pad near the R3 text. Other end of pot connected to the +ve o/p connection near the R24 text. This pots allows me to adjust the o/p voltage from near the battery volts (8.4V) to 20V or so. I melted a hole in the outer case to be able to adjust the pot. I particular wanted to set it to 13.5V or so to power a portable amateur radio transceiver. I also added a two pin socket which enables an external connection to the battery to put more cells in parallel with them. The connector faces down through where the spring loaded pusher thing was, hot glued to the side of the internal battery, so that 18650 cells with protection circuit can be placed in the round container to increase capacity and the connection plugged in from underneath. Input charging via the small round socket takes from around 6V to 20V to charge the batteries. Overall a very useful unit for £5.

I often use kerosene to remove various tape and stickers that can't be removed just with fingers. Using alcohol or other chemicals often damages something or leaves surfaces scarred. Just dismantled a "kit: POWER PACK" 8000mAh for an 2nd gen Echo, had to peel off the rubber pad underneath to get to the screws, it has two 4000mAh cells in parallel. I also went back and bought two more for a fiver each, because... well... the price was too good to pass up and I'll find a use for them somehow, especially as they work as ordinary USB power banks :D

Hi Clive, 2 5000mAh cells in series is still 5000mAh, but double the voltage. So Watt hrs are doubled. 2 5000mAh cells in parallel would be 10000mAh at the same voltage. So Watt hrs are still doubled. Battery manufacturers tend to use mAh as the capacity measurement, butt Watt hrs would be a much more accurate way of stating capacity.
@bigclivedotcom

It's a common thing to quote the combined mAh capacity of all the cells added together these days. Inspired by marketing I guess.

If the three layer circuit board isnt for current capaxitu then it would be for EMC. Far easier to control your emissions with an inner layer and when your not desiging for pound shop sales you may be able to justify the extra layer.

Wicked video Clive! It really is quite sad that so many items these days, especially of this nature, aren't what they are sold as. Marketer's need a good wake up call. Selling a 5Ahr pack as a 10Ahr pack, is fraud no matter how you slice it.

That dual-output arrangement, Clive? Possibly to deal with the Zoon device's quiescent state-a few mA, perhaps, and the active state-when Amazon is spying on you-which would probably be a lot higher.

It's not fair. Dollar stores in Canada never have cool shit like this. Although Dollarama did have nice little Bluetooth speakers for a while there. And some Bluetooth keyboards as well. Very poor quality, but cheap and good for small/temporary projects, so I guess I really can't complain. Never mind.

Having a ready-made 15 volt pack seem more useful since it can easily be dropped to 12 volt with it being a very useful voltage for a lot of things.

I usually can get the glue to separate by slowly dripping Isoproponyl Alcohol (99%) into the area that is glued. Not sure if that would make the cells go bang but I've done that with other things that are double sided taped together...(Assuming that is tape and not just a blob of glue)

Wow, I had no idea these existed! I want one. I have a 2nd generation Echo Dot which I sometimes power from a portable phone charger, as it uses standard MicroUSB for power, but obviously can't do that with the larger Echo or even the newer Echo Dot as they all use a higher voltage (due to the larger speakers I guess), so one of these would be very nice. Is it actually the same company as Poundland or just the same sort of thing?

Poundlands seem to vary a lot. So many items I see on your channel never show up in our local Poundlands (we have two in our little town). This unit is available in our Poundland but it is rated at 8000mAH and looks shorter. Probably still worth the £5 though? I can't wait for Xmas to be over with all the Xmas stuff going for 25p each so I can stock up on LED's and stuff :-)

Another point about lithium ion battery shorts, even if the cell is not damaged, the short will be heated to the point where it burns you within a fraction of a second, they've got real oomph. Source, dropping a nickel strip on a battery pack I was spot welding, using a spot welder I'd made out of a car starter solenoid, and a lithium ion jump starter battery pack. ....Not my wisest moment, although tbf it did the job and didn't blow up, so there's that.
@ELECTROHAXZ
@ELECTROHAXZ 5 лет назад
Next time you mess with lipo cells with a board like that, use a soldering iron to heat the points on the board, they're not actually spot welded to the board, they're spot welded to metal plates which are soldered to the board. The tabs of the cells are hard to solder to as well so it's always best to desolder the plates from the board, it's easier too.

Regardless how the cells turned out to be (even if they had been 2x10Ah cells), it's pretty stupid how power-bank manufacturers advertise the capacity of the internal cell. When the output is 5 V (or, 15 V in this case), who cares about the charge capacity of the internal cell at some unknown voltage? If anything, they could use parallel NiCd cells to artificially inflate their Ah-rating (and I'm almost surprised they don't already do that). It would make a ton more sense if they either quoted the Ah capacity at the rated output voltage, or (more reasonably) just quoted the capacity in Wh instead.

I wouldn't cut the terminals out like that. It would be better to unsolder them. Some cells leads are aluminum and they have metal laminated on the ends. If it only has aluminum its pretty hard to connect a wire to them without the metal ends.

10,000mAh battery? What's the weight of that thing? My phone has an internal 10,300mAh battery, yes it's a brick, yes it's heavy (360g), and it takes an absolute age to charge on a non-fast USB charger, but a full charge lasts days, it's waterproof to 2 meters and tough as nails (in a toughness test video they bang nails into wood with one, using the screen...)
