'Trigger Warning': There is a fatality in this one. But as someone who has lived with this sport for most of my life, I agree with Steven Cole Smith. "You either get it, or you don't. I prefer the company of those who do.". If you don't, perhaps you shouldn't be watching auto racing videos in the first place. I don't like it, but I don't focus upon it. So let's go racing.
Bruce Flanders on ESPN! And Tom Gloy in the booth, too. I can't recall when Tom gave it up, but I know he ran a team for a few years after he quit driving.
Audi picks a legendary SCCA team to put the Quattro in front of Americans. Tullius says, 'This ain't no tube-frame car..'.
Pruitt says he digs having Deborah (I met her back then, don't call her "Debbie" - she hates it) and Lyn on the team, before the green drops and he vanishes into the distance. In a tube-frame V8 Ford Sierra. Seriously, how dumb did the marketing folks at Ford think we were? I didn't think a V8 was ever offered, even in Europe. And IMO, all that 'Merkur BR-549' nonsense was insulting 'car guys' in the US. Enthusiasts knew what a Sierra was. Funny thing..Ford made the same mistake with the Mondeo years later (called the "Contour" over here). Eh, at least they sent us the V6 that time.
Newman and Hoerr seem to forget that it's a street race over at Turn One. Both continue after a little time in the pits.
Hans breaks the Audi, but not before showing everyone else that they should fear it for the rest of the season.
I had actually forgotten Gentilozzi started with Oldsmobiles. Great dice with Les Lindley on & off for most of the race.
Scott runs it dry. They must have forgotten to put in a bigger fuel cell after the V8 swap. Puts Lyn on the podium though. I was pretty stoked at the time..I've always said that the only thing guys like more than girls is...girls who like cars.
Not many commercials this time, I must have watched it at home on a weekend without a local race. One exception: at about 41:20, there's the old Audi "Michele Mouton's a Mommy Now!" ad, followed by an SCCA recruitment message. I must have had to go the bathroom or something. :D

Crazy to think that in over 40 years of racing at LB, Croft's still the only driver to die during a race weekend there. Sometimes at certain tracks, you tend to get lucky, so to speak when it comes to in-race fatalities, and Long Beach is just one of those tracks. RIP Dan.

I recall those Audis getting ridiculously dominant in the Trans-Am series that year - they kept adding more and more weight to the cars, to reduce their advantage. Eventually, the SCCA just banned all-wheel drive from the series at the end of 1988.

Paul Newman seems to have a Problem to find his brakes in those races........ 2nd video i watch and he just goes staright in both. I'm coroius if he learns at one point that you have to slow down for the corners......

The V8 WAS an option in South Africa as an FYI....I do agree with you though, what WAS Ford thinking? Rocketsports got its name thanks to Oldsmobile lots of people forget about that. I have nothing to add or say about Dan Croft. Rest in peace.

+Tiptoetherat , Woah. there really *was* a V8 Sierra?!? Mind blown. I'm not saying I'm looking for one on Jo'burg Craisglist or anything..but wow. Maybe that's the rule that let them shove one in the car over here in the US. IIRC, the way Bob Sharp got the V8 turbo Z into IMSA back in the day was because Nissan actually built a V8 for the limousines (still branded as "Prince", even though it must have been thirty years since Nissan bought them) for Japanese politicians. Adam Carolla's still got the one Newman drove.

oldSCCAguy yah That is EXACTLY the reason they were allowed to do the V8 Merkur. Steve Evans actually made a comment about said rule during one of the telecasts. Funny enough around here there are more converted V8 Merkurs running in the local races here then stock 4 bangers. Makes you think...

Tiptoetherat That's so cool! Never realized T/A had a similar rule.

oldSCCAguy yah Well they were feeling the heat from IMSA so a lot of the rules blended at this time. But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Thanks for all the memories.

@@Tiptoetherat To quote Wikipedia: "..., also made in South Africa was a limited run of 250 V8 XR8s for saloon car racing homologation in 1984. These were based on the Ford Windsor 302 engine." Would that saloon car racing be the Wesbank Modifieds or was there another saloon car formula in SA prior or at the same time?
