@gybx4094
@gybx4094 8 лет назад
I think her performance was spectacular. She was cast to play an average housewife and she did it perfectly. Her performance is very realistic. The confusion and fear she demonstrates as Nicholson threatens her is very real. She accurately relays confusion, terror, an attempt to placate Nicholson, and survivalist instincts. Her entire performance is an homage to an average person having the will to survive in a surrealistically terrifying event. She skillfully extracts empathy from the viewer, especially in the baseball bat and bathroom axe scenes. Even her looks without makeup make her a believable character. She did fantastic.

The logic that something can be justified by the existence of something worse is stupid. Would a person shooting you up with a machine gun be a-ok because you could also be killed slowly over the course of 3 weeks with power tools? It doesn't matter if there's something worse, it's still shit.

Yea but the difference is all those jobs you mention are necessary. The brave men and women put their lives on the line for the safety of others. acting on the other hand is just for the ENTERTAINMENT of others and is not necessary at all and yet actors can still sometimes be flung into situations as harrowing as the real life heros they are tasked to portray on the big screen. So I see why an actor would contemplate walking out on a job.

@Unownshipper 8 лет назад
Exactly, imagine the pressure she'd feel from Star Wars fans for the rest of her life if her performance was deemed "not worthy enough." Add to it the fact that she was an up and coming actress, it's no wonder she was stressed.

Dincorta I can understand she would be stressed, but that's not bad, just criticism needed, and she did great as a result. What Kubrick did to Shelly on the other hand for "The Shining" is so fucking disgusting, that not only did it wreck her mental health, but her livelihood, as she's dirt poor, mentally ill, and constantly miserable. the 127 takes was one of the many things she had to deal with. It's why I hate fucking Kubrick now.

I think duvall had it bad. I think it was 5 years of filming and Kubrick took long to get the "perfect" take for most scenes. The 127 number is just the most outstanding. I saw behind the scene footage and he was also kind of a bully to her exclusively.
@edienandy
@edienandy 5 лет назад
Clarissa Garcia there’s no way they filmed five years for The Shining. The movie was released in 1980 and the book was published in 1977. I’d say at most the filming lasted about a year. I think you’re right though, doing a scene over 100 times is extreme and unnecessary. Either the director should cast an actor he feels can deliver the performance in a reasonable amount of takes or the director needs to be a better communicator about what kind of performance he wants from the actors. To break the actor down by forcing them to do take after take is wrong. Actors are not pieces of meat, you can’t do whatever you want to them in the name of getting the take.

If I had a very good paying job, I would put up with a lot more stress. In my mundane paying job, I will not put up with much. I can find an identical job to it just down the avenue. But if it paid what an actor makes, I would even take certain types of abuse.
@TheUndyingCrystal
@TheUndyingCrystal 8 лет назад
+Indrid Cold And that's why we have so many problems with groupthink, because people don't wanna speak it out of fear of being the outcast or being fired. There's sucking it up, and then there's letting yourself be abused because of a director's eccentricities. Kubrick was a prick, and while his contributions to cinema are undeniable, it does not change the fact many of his artistic and directorial choices are poor and resulted in mistreatment for those working under him. She's lucky she survived his treatment and continued with her career. Many others can't say the same.

I am no actor. Nor will I ever be one. But one thing that really annoys me both in my actual work and in life as a whole is: Pointless repetitions. It was said here that Kubrick reshot a scene 127 times. But that is nothing compared to Charles Chaplin who often reshot scenes several hundred times: In "City Lights" he did it 342 times and was still not satistied but ran out of money. People hail Kubrick, Chaplin, and others for their great artistic integrity. But the thruth is that only very few people - if any - can spot the difference between the first and last take. So in my view more than a few retakes is pointless and a waste of everybody's time and talent. So that would have made me quit.

@reercudi
@reercudi 8 лет назад
For Kubrick it's not about pointless repetitions. I remeber watching a documentary about filming of Shining and some guy said about these numerous takes. Kubrick did it because in a few first takes actor acts Ok, then he tries to be better or do different versions of his delivery/performance. Then when he's tired he tries to save his energy and doesn't act well. And when director keeps going with takes an actor is exhausted and pissed off and starts to act much more crazy. You can't get this kind of performance with a few takes.
@organfairy
@organfairy 8 лет назад
Off course not. But whenever we develope new products we always do cost/benefit analysis on how long time it is possible to use on a given product. And that time is pretty short because today nobody wants to pay much for a gadget. If we say "this product is fine now. But if we spend 6 months more we can make it 0.01% better" we would soon be out of busines.

It is strange that, "The Birds," was based on actual events. An algae bloom off the cost of the western United States of America took place and fish ate the algae. The algae had a nuro toxin. The fish died. The birds came in and ate the fish when n top of the water. The birds became mentally damaged and were attacking people and animals inland around the coast. About a week later, the birds all died and bulldozers and wheel loaders had to come in to clean up the dead birds.

If Clint Eastwood can get a good scene in one or two takes and be a box office success, what justifies directors like Kubrick to insist on over 100 takes? Some kind of pathological need for perfection that can never be reached? Stories like Kubrick and Hitchcock taking days and hundreds of takes really make you wonder about the sanity of directors.

Reading about this stuff a lot you start to realize how directors often dehumanize their actors and especially actresses. There are absolutely countless incidents of directors suddenly pushing an unscripted sexual act or dangerous stunt on actresses. If something was in the script, the actress could get a chance to address it, refuse to do it, or try to compromise with the director to allow them a change that will make them more comfortable. Once you're on set and in the middle of a scene, though, there is a lot more pressure, and as you can see from this video there are also a lot of situations in which the actors are probably willing to do more than usual just to get out of an incredibly uncomfortable round of filming.

Stanley Kubrick, was without a doubt, one of the most talented filmmakers of the 20th century, but he was an incredibly inefficient filmmaker. 127 takes, having your actor's hair fall out from the stress, taking thousands of pictures of your locations, that's just ludicrous. I would not be surprised of Kubrick had true OCD. I also have no doubt that the majority of his meticulousness went to waste, never actually having added anything to the finished product. You can argue that we wouldn't have the kind of quality we're used to from him without his attention to detail, but I'm not so sure. There are plenty of esteemed directors (Nolan, Spielberg, Scorsese) that get brilliant material without having to put themselves and their actors through that kind of hell. Kubricks works will stand the test of time, but tell that to all the people who's time, money and sanity he wasted.

Ed almost drowned during one of the freefall into the abyss scenes. If a rescue diver hadn't noticed he was in trouble, he probably would have. On his way home after filming that day, Ed had to pull over because he had a mental breakdown. It's one of my favorite movies but I was pretty shocked to hear that and haven't seen it since.

One actress could have been added on here too: Jane Levy from the Evil Dead (2013) movie. Behind the scenes showed her frustration during some of the scenes that were shot. They were showing terror in the most realistic way possible, but it also left the actors physically and mentally exhausted sometimes.

@missnewbienoob
@missnewbienoob 8 лет назад
You know a movie is bad when an actor tells his fans, "Please do not watch it." In rare times when he talks about it, you can still see he is traumatized by it and is uncomfortable if a fan brings it up at conventions. Luckily, the SPN family is obsessive enough to know that is an off-the-table topic at conventions now. I'm not a Castiel fan, but I do have great respect for Misha and it hurts to see him hurt...well, hurt like that. If he's hurting from pain inflicted by J2, I'm fine with it. ;)
