Ok a question from a guy who knows just enough to be dangerous. 2 pin plug can be plugged in either way. LN-NL. Live earth?ish. Why does the radio work both ways? Said I was a bit thick. Is a UK 3pin plug with an earthed chassis a good or bad idea. For a vintage radio.

In AC mains, L and N are identical except for the fact that N is connected to mains E somewhere in the background. The radio just wants to see voltage, and as long as it’s AC volts and of the right level, it doesn’t care if one of the connections is also connected to Mother Earth. As regards the UK system, you really have to be careful if and when you connect E to a chassis, because you could be making a direct short in the process.
