Schiit Asgard 3 vs HeadAmp Gilmore Lite MK2 | Freedom Land Class A Amp Battle

The Schiit Asgard 3 and HeadAmp Gilmore Lite MK2 are two different American made Class A* amps coming in at pretty different price points. That Asgard 3 is using Schiit's new continuity Class A design, but can it hold its own against a much more expensive fully Class A design? Found out in this review.
Thanks to the two viewers who provided these amps for review!

This is what I have been saying about the Asgard 3 for a while now, its amazing for the price like damn. Paired with the modius is a crazy combo. IMO the Asgard 3 is the cheapest amp that I have heard that doesn't sound like your sacrificing a bunch of detail and overall quality for the lower price.

Nice review. Schiit seems to have a habit of hitting above its price point. Sometimes way above.

I was trying to decide which amp to bring to work, the Asgard 2 or Gilmore Lite Mk2, found this video. Cool.

I had an order for the THX789 but it got lost in transit so got the Asgard 3, took a long time due to backorder though. I should thank the post for losing the 789 cause I demoed it recently and much prefer the warmer sound of the A3 over the more analytical 789. Great video as always!

The Headamp has a metal volume knob; at least mine has. Oh, and if viewers can find what Dan Clark of DC Audio (yes, the guy who has made some of the best PM headphones available) had to say about the little Headamp, it might give you a little 'perspective'...

For me I did not notice any glare from Asgard 3, if anything quite opposite - it has extremely comfortable, silky treble. I do experience some glares coming from Topping L30 even though L30 also has smooth silky treble. Yes, silky yet glaring at times if that makes sense. But never with Asgard 3 for me. Another thing I found differently from this review on Asgard 3 is that it is much more heavily colored with warm tone than described here, which I actually like. There is a night and day difference between this warm toned Asgard 3 and cool and clear L30.

I have extremely different needs and really prefer the Gilmore. The slight compression and warmer tonality is perfect for Death Metal and Doom Metal through my LCD 2C. I have no need for huge width due to my genres of choice and I’m a bit treble sensitive, so the drummers wailing on the cymbals can bore into your ears on a more revealing amp.
@ResilientME
@ResilientME 4 года назад
Have you owned the A3 as well? I use mine for harsh black/thrash metal and find it solves most of the issues. Rolled treble and smooth. That's interesting if the Gilmore moves even more in that direction.

I have had the A3 since it came out and I’m a huge metal head. No issues whatsoever. I find it super smooth. Although I mostly use Elears with the upper mid range dip so the combo works well for me.

@@ResilientME I wouldn't say the Asgard 3 has rolled treble. It extends pretty far.

@@ResilientME I had the chance to try the A3 at CanJam NYC right before the virus prevented the chance to try things in person for the rest of time ever again. I really enjoyed it but on a noisy convention floor, my main impression was "wow, this seems pretty good for the price. Sounds a lot like my Gilmore!" I would love to A/B test them in a quieter environment. I think if they're close at all and you don't have either, it's a no brainer to grab the A3 given the 300 dollar price difference for something also made in the USA

789 anyways is a pretty middle in the line of THX's chips. The SP200 is even a much higher-end model than the 789.

@@Firenmage433 because it uses the highest end THX chip. I've owned both, and the SP200 had better Dynamics (the difference between softer and louder sounds in the same frequency) than the 789.

@@metal571 Why lol ? It's been shown 0.5dB differences are regularly perceptible. It's not easy to do if done by measuring the headphone levels either, it should be done by playing a standard tone or pink noise and using a voltmeter on the outputs.

I know the modi is the most obvious choice for pairing with asguard 3... But what do you think would be the best dac for around $100 usd (ignoring aesthetics). Currently daily driver is the Sundaras. Personally leaning towards a musical wide sound preferably.

How is the Asgard jack? On my Magni Heresy it super tight. Still in my 15 day trial. Might upgrade to Asgard and modi to modius. Also might go Modius and A90. Would be nice to have balanced. More money obviously.
@ResilientME
@ResilientME 4 года назад
Seems normal to me though I made the move from the Heresy and nothing stuck out to me about the jack in either. Just a heads up the A3 is a different sound to the MH, if you're just looking for a more premium version of the same you may find it a step backwards.

My only gripe with the Asgard is that it cuts output to powered speakers when you plug something into the headphone jack.

@@jlin5459 I've seen amps like the NFB-11 that had a switch for preamp and headphones. It was convenient not constantly unplugging the headphone to listen to speakers. I'm also a little worried unplugging would wear down the jack over time but that's probably not something to worry about.
