Which one would you prefer? The Rekkr or the Aiyima T9 Pro?
@justinhof6315
@justinhof6315 Год назад
I just bought the t9 pro as a stand in while my vintage amp is in the shop. I use it in a desktop set up with some elac speakers. You are right, it does sound very class d and not nearly as good as my vintage amp. It was better in my living room for background music and played loud. I don't use Bluetooth but I did try it and it has a crazy buzzing sound come through just like you. I a/b the dac with the schiit mani and the schiit dac was noticeably clearer. This really isn't a great comparison since you need a preamp with the schiit. As you tested it the schiit is a $450 plus extra for a dac total vs 129 for the t9 pro. Do you have any recommendations for a cheaper pre amp? The t9 itself? Or would that still impart the class d sound? Love those jazz is dead albums too. Great pick!
@ForeverAnalog

@@justinhof6315 good question on the cheaper pre-amp - I haven't used one of these class d as pre-amp only and haven't really found a cheap one either, sorry. Wish I could be more help!

Love your comparison analysis "an apple to apple pie" which is soo correct as you can't compare the two because the Rekkr is a Class AB power amp only and the T9 Pro is an all-in-one pre-amp, tube buffer, DAC, equalizer and Class D power amp. You also cannot fairly directly compare the sound quality of Class AB to Class D power output stages, using these two excellent products in the methodology you employed because the number of variances it introduced. If the sound difference between the two was the goal... may we suggest using this methodology: Laptop usb--->T9 Pro Aux Out--->Rekkr--->Speakers, and Laptop usb--->T9 Pro--->Speakers In this configuration there is only one variance, that is the output power stage. Now you are comparing "apples to apples" using these two devices. With all that said, a much better comparison would have been starting with a Class D power amp only like the $60.00 Aiyima A07. Now...when you do that...I want a front row seat to that event!!!!

@@larryjohnson9019 wonderful feedback, thank you so much! I might take you up on that A07 idea!
@larryjohnson9019

@@ForeverAnalog I feel bad mentioning this, as it only appears that people comment when they have something negative to say...and that is not our intent, but we notice that in your desktop/near-filed setup you used the analog output from the laptop, if this is a windows system, the audio interface has the audio enhancement feature on by default which provides a fletcher munson curve response i.e., loudness, to compensate for humans loss of high and low freq. sensitivity at low signal levels. If this is the case, it is a very good chance, what you were experiencing with the Rekkr directly connected to your laptop audio output was not the Rekkr itself... but the "loudness" bump in the signal from the laptop. BTW, this audio signal enhancement is not in USB audio stream you provided to the T9.

Great video man! I started with the Aiyima and then the Rekkr and totally agree with your assessment. Chinese amps are good, but the Rekkr is truly great at any volume. Schiit really did it this time, amazing product at a comparable price. Plus, made in Texas, you can't go wrong with that 🎉

I don't think this comparison makes much sense. It's an apple to apple pie comparison and the apple gets a lot more expensive in comparison (you'll need a preamp and a dac which will add to price considerably - and i'm not even consedering all the features - tubes, remote, bluetooth, 3.5mm out, etc. - that you don't necessarily get with any preamp and dac). Also, watching this video, one gets the impression that - apart from features - the t9 pro is trash and that completely contradicts the other videos you made on the unit.

Every class D amp I have heard: vague and rolled off treble. Class D amps modulate noise in the upper frequencies and have poor filtering anyway. Some people call this "Tube like smoothness". The tube gear I have is not rolled off like that. I get an extended treble, not some vague "smooth" nonsense. The class D that I have tried do their best at medium to loud volume, but still aren't high fidelity. They are better as sub amps. They will appeal to those with an incorrect sense of the tube sound and just want rolled off treble.

I've always felt that an amplifier doesn't get going until it's about three-quarters up on the volume knob. You know it when you're listening it's that sweet spot where the Dynamics in the headroom and everything come together. That's why Steve guttenberg audiophiliac uses low powered amplifiers usually in his own listening space. And I myself a Greek what's where I live I really can't belt it out so I got myself MUZISHARE X3T Tube Headphone Amplifier Balanced XLR 6.5mm Class A sinle-Ended EL84 Valve Integrated Amplifier. so it's a balance headphone amplifier but it also has a 5-watt class a tube amplifier. So for someone sizing down from a good AB amplifier to rekkr, biggest downgrade would be in bass quantity and quality? I was extremely disappointed with class D and am afraid I'd also be with rekkr. Do you think Rega IO at €450 would be better bang for the buck than rekkr at €250(eu pricing)?
