For this price, you can get top-of-the-line Class D Hypex or Purify..... I think you miss talking about the different class of Amps and why they might pair up with speakers...
Tyr sounds better than every amp I’ve ever owned. Dynamic, punchy, transparent, detailed but without piercing your ears, deep soundstage. Worth the money!
@@Corndog642 NRD did a quick overview of the Tyr using Freya N and said that the Freya N was holding the Tyr back. Said there was a drastic difference when using a better pre-amp.
@@jayaros5337 He never mentioned trying different tubes which could’ve made a difference in a tube preamp. What seems to hold many lower cost preamps is the volume control. I don’t know how PS Audio does it, but the GCD sounds more transparent to me.
@@Corndog642 you’ll get no argument on rolling tubes from me lol. I have the Freya+ and am a bit addicted to tube rolling. Unfortunately the cost of NOS 6SN7 tubes have gone up and supply issues Schiit had with 6SN7 tubes was the reason the Freya N was even made. For the money, the Freya pre-amps are hard to beat. The pre-amp NRD used was 3 times the cost of the Freya+ with tubes
It's still on the warmside dead dull , unlike super sharp razor microfiber details which lacks. Nothing close like Focal but garbage Buschardt speakers
A choke is an old-school term for an inductor. Think of a transformer, but with only one winding through which current to pass. As an electrical engineer, there are only so many passive components available - resistors, capacitors and inductors. Power supply designers often “cheap out” and use only capacitor banks, but better quality power is achieved by combining inductors with capacitors in the filtering phase. So when you hear “choke regulated” they are referring to the use of inductors in the power supply filtration. The trade-off is a heavier unit, bigger footprint and higher cost to the customer. Musical Fidelity has been making choke-regulated audio amplifiers for decades. Or they used to.
Through your suggestions Randy I’m the proud owner of the Emotiva pt1 and the A2 amp. I’ve also picked up the Klipsch 820f speakers. Love them all!! I’m currently waiting on the wiim pro and the worlds best cables( both through your link) I absolutely trust you sir. So keep up the great reviews and I’ll keep staying at work to afford all this greatness lol.
ditto got the emo a2 and pt2 with schitt modi 3e and wbcables. looking hard at gescheli dac with ak cjp but right now the zu dws and klipsch heresy 2s are making me run home from work to jam out. cam is the shi imean greatest.sorry i cant type good.
by the way do you find the clean or nutral sound of emotiva maybe too much for klipsch speaks?i gotta get tone control.beyond the base and treble.also its hard for me to always find the trim setting before the tune is over.
The music I listen to is all over the place. Mainly metal, classic rock, 80’s and almost anything that’s a live recording. I’m loving the sound of the Emotiva setup. The Klipsch speakers are kind of hot on top, but my room is crazy and open. I put the speakers on these wire mesh like baskets to raise the sound stage about 12 inches. The speakers are actually running high pass with a sub crossed at 90hz from the low pass on the pt1. I’m still burning it all in. Once it seems good as it is, then I’ll switch to full range and start all over lol.
I wonder how the Schitt Tyrs would go against the Emotiva XPA HC1 monos. At $879…the HC1s are closer in price to the Tyr. Whoops. I guess the XPA DR1 at 1500 a piece are the better competitor.
If you want the low end punch, why not bi-amp with a Crown XLS Drive core for the lows and use the Emotivas for the mids and uppers? That combo would still be cheaper than one Tyr.
I have several products from both companies, but no amplifiers. I'm sure I'd be very happy with the lesser priced pair of monoblocks. Great Review Randy! 👍👍👍
ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with your track list for evaluation!! 😊 😉 If you're going to have fun, have fun! Love the attitude and all the information. Always a great channel and a great video.
Could you compare the Tyrs to one and two Aegirs? Why? Because Aeigir and Tyr both have Contunuity output stages. Will Aegir give you the same sound if you need less power?
You know the Kinma Hypersonic Audio from China? No no, it are not the Russiand rockets...it are great amps, you can buy them direct from factory, amps, speakers, etc. Its just a tip, they can compete with all the ones who are mentioned at RU-vid.
Emotiva wins amp battle as my BasX was on sale for $300 (100 wpc at 8 ohm). Plus it has high pass switch (80 hz?) with lows out variable RCAs. Schiit wins preamp battle as my Asgard 3 was $220 plus they have many other preamps with and without tubes. ChiFi wins cheap dac battle ($110). Does a pair of Tyr amps sound 10x better? No way. 2x better? I hope so. Maybe one day I will get a pair. Wait. That didn't come out right. 😲
Thanks for another great video. I'd love to see you do a more in-depth review of the Freya N (maybe even including tube rolling), even though it is temporarily discontinued. I suspect they'll have to bring it back pretty soon, when they can't get enough 6SN7s anymore. That was why they said introduced the N in the first place.
As always love the channel. It should be of note that the emotiva 4 ohm rating is at 1kh as opposed to 20-20k as they state at 8 ohms. That would lead me to believe the power supply lacks dynamic range.
Love Sevendust, I've seen them several times over the years, great live band. First time I saw them was in the 90s I think, my friend's band was the opener at a bowling alley in Lapeer, MI.
Hey man, great content, I've been catching up for a few months now from London, UK. However, was wondering if you could do a vid about the differences between the mini amps and large ones? I tried to do some research but nothing is clear outside of noise filters and separation, is that it? Just trying to understand if more engineering does go into the physically larger amps. Cheers
Randy, that wasn’t really a fair comparison. The A1’s are an entry level monoblock. I own the Emotiva HC1’s and would really love to see a comparison between them and the Tyr’s. Love what you do Randy. Thanks again!😎
Wow! A fantastic review of some really great American audio manufacturers. Nicely done. I have a TON of Schiit gear (including a Vidar) and also a pair of Emotiva XPA-HC1 monoblocks. All of it is excellent gear. I would very much love to try out a pair of Tyrs but, in the end, I think that the HC-1's are my end-game system. They do have some soul to them. Now I wanna try some Tyr amps, but right not the budget isn't there. Regardless you did a very good review. Much appreciated as always.
I recommend Architects. They’re really good and have a good mix of everything in their songs. Specifically Dead Butterflies. Screaming, melodic, trumpets and string instruments. They even have a live version called Abbey versions
I had the good fortune of auditioning some of the Geshelli Labs gear here in Tampa last weekend at the Florida Audio Expo and the owners of Geshelli mentioned they are planning to have you tour their facility. Good move, they have some terrific gear and are looking forward to your visit. Keep up the good work and objectivity. Paul
Yeah and I wish more reviewers would touch upon Outlaw. Despite their outdated webpage, i’ve heard solid feedback about their stuff. Has has my curiosity, and I’ve considered trying out there mono blocks.
I love all my Schiit ! 🎯 The most recent is the Lokius eq that I use balanced XLRs in a head-fi stack. It's really cool for on-the-fly boosts and cuts depending on the recording or headphones I'm listening to. Thanks for the video and thoughts Randy 👏
Would be interesting to know what speakers you paired these with. Also would be nice to see how these compare to the Vidar and Aegir since those can run as mono blocks as well. Also, also are you going to do a video on the Freya N?, cause I don't get exactly what is in relation to the Plus.
Why use these when the $60 ayimia and fosi have been reviewed so well here? I bought 4 of them for my 5.1.6 system. Less than $300 for the lot why would I buy 1k amps?
Hope you could share your insights. I am using a denon 3800h with all 4 OHM Emotiva speakers. 11 channel Tonewinner Amp @ $1775.00 with no tax on summit website. or Emotiva XPA Gen 3 11 channel at current sale going on $1,931.00 with tax on Emotiva website. Or do you have another combo to get me to the 11 channel? I am not overly familiar with either, thoughts?
Got an Emotiva PT2 pre amp coming. Too bad the didn't include an XLR pre out on it. It does have a wealth of features which is why I bought it. Have a Fossi ZA3 and an amp camp kit coming too. If the amp camp does well, I may get another and mono block them and use the ZA3 for a sealed sub using the low pass filter on the Emotiva's sub out.
Hey Randy thanks for the review! Any idea how these would compare sonically with the Crown XLS1502? Im on the verge of purchasing a new power amp for my home stereo.
I find the Crown Drivecore ii amps to be better than most people think. What I read was Harmon used some of the same technology as the more expensive Mark Levinson stuff they were building at that time. I've had a few amps come and go and even some higher priced stuff to compare to and the Crowns are good for the price.. especially if you pick up used. The treble is soft, but not very extended. Voices are very clear, transparent. Lower and mid lower bass can be a little lean compared to other amps of it's power but I wouldn't consider it bad or completely lacking. I would describe it as a linear amp where nothing sticks out, and if paired with the same type of speaker will give good results. I wouldn't pair it with overly sensitive speakers, and would take the time to choose which Sensitivity Input on the amp sounds better. You will notice a difference between the 2. I have held onto one of my Crown's and I put it in whenever I'm having an issue or I'm in-between amps. I find it to be very smooth. The gear you pair it with plays a part in this as well though.
I have the Freya N and am considering a pair of Vidar 2s or Tyrs. I love the gain on the Tyrs, the power on the Vidar 2s in mono. I'm assuming the Tyrs are a little better quality for twice the price, but is the sound twice as good?
I've got the original Elac UniFi UB5s and I've sometimes wondered if they would benefit from a more powerful amp like these. I'm using an Outlaw RR-2150 integrated amp (160W into 4 ohms), and it has pre-outs. Oh, and what speakers were you using?
@@Feliciano12v I remember that review helped convince me to buy the RR2150. I had forgotten about their in-house measurements, though. Seems like I probably don't need more power. I should just save my money until I'm ready to upgrade to some $1K+ speakers.
@@Chopstick2U I agree. I have the RR2160MKII with Elac UB52 2.0's and enjoy them. I f I upgrade, it'll be the speakers for sure. This amp is plenty powerful.
What speaker/ amp do you use for your music listening? I ask because, I have very similar music taste, and I have no places nearby to audition speakers. Thank you for all you videos,
Header asks best monoblock amp so as a long time Emotiva owner, the XPR-1 1,000 watts RMS into 8 ohms. Massive dynamics with the precision of a Swiss watch.
You're probably hearing the result of the Tyrs massive reserves of power from their doubtless huge transformers and capacitors in the power supply sections. 200 watts at 8 ohms is no joke. Also this allows a really good amplifier section the oomph it needs for good damping and control during big low frequency transients. At 110 pounds per stereo pair, this is what you're paying for, power reserves constantly on tap and fine control of that power. This sort of thing goes double for a really good tube amp. This is just like when you build a hot rod car, cubic inches cost cubic stacks of dollars.
Schiit has a lot of new and newly updated products that I have yet to see anyone reviewing yet (MM2, Modi +, Vidar 2 Mani 2, desktop amps, etc.) yet there are very limited reviews of these products. I wonder what the bottleneck is? Are they not sending many samples out?
Best salesman schiit ever had. Dont get me wrong. I have a few things made by schiit but they are stepping stones while I find what I am looking for. I'm trying to build my dream system from when I was a kid. If that falls through I will probably get a vidar to go with my other schiit and just try to match some speakers. BTW, schiit should partner with someone like svs and do some speakers.
I have not heard either of these amps, but just based on what I know about their builds and the related, in my opinion the Emotiva wins, hands down in the quality department. As for sonics, I don't know.
Randy as a fellow sailor (I’m 47, and still in) I will like and watch all your vids. I’ll comment when I find a truly useful - the emotiva/schiit comparisons are definitely useful. Thanks for your work. Hooyah
I've had the Tyr for several weeks now and am very happy (upgraded from Vidar in mono config) drive Maggie .7. Regarding your experience with the Freya +, did that come with the JJ or the Tung Sol tubes? Mine came with the Tung Sol and I have tube rolled a few other tubes in it and found sizeable differences. I have read that the JJs can sound thinner than the Tung Sol.
@@sopasadena1499 First I tried Gold Lion 6922's on the right side. Sounded great. The clarity improved greatly over the included no-name Soviet tubes. I was so impressed I dropped another $160 on an additional set of Gold Lion 6922's for the left side. The results were even better. The left side added depth and a more precise soundstage. Unfortunately, Gold Lion 6922's are becoming a rare breed due to Mr Putin's antics.
@@joeschudrowitz5513 I have been using 6dj8 tubes nos 1960s made in holland for both buffer and gain sides. Smoothes out the highs and extends the bass. Better than the stock tubes. Glad you like the 6922. I have also tried 6cg7 tubes in the gain side. More of a tubey sound. All NOS tubes need an extended break in period
I think you should change your channel name to "Audio Man" because there's NOTHING cheap about most of the stuff you talk about, especially these amps!!
I got a 115v on closeout a month ago. I have become convinced that they have a goodly supply of them and are only posting a few at a time on the closeouts page, so that people will think they'd better get one RIGHT NOW before they're all gone. It sure worked for me, LOL. Not that I have any complaints; I got an amazing preamp, brand new, at 1/3 off what was already a really good price. So anyway, I suggest you keep checking back. I've watched them add 2 or 3 new small batches since I got mine a month ago.
Class A/B (NOT CLASS D) MonoBlock w/ 600 Watts @ 8ohms for $329 new & shipped? I'll bet they're a fly-by-night outfit with no experience designing power amps. These are just too cheap for an audio man. 🔈🔉🔊
My friend has Tyrs and he brought them over a while back. He also has an Audio-gd R27-HE that he drives them with and brought that too, as well as a Freya+. I'm just running a Parasound Hint 6 right now and have a Vidar in the mud as well. My Speakers are Tekton Moabs. I found the Tyrs to be incredibly neutral and transparent. They have a lot of resolution and are very capable. Bass is tight and controlled. If there's more than the A1, I would suggest that the A1 is lacking and not that Tyr has boosted bass. If anything, I expected Tyr to have more personality, but it doesn't. I'm not complaining though! The effortless clarity is addictive. For music, I think my preference is to pair them with a warmer source. For movies, I'd go all in on transparency. Out of everything we listened to, possibly the most haunting thing for me was the sounds of the fighter jets in Topgun Mavrick. I know, right? But jets have that incredible sound as they tear through the air. The Tyrs captured it and I felt like the jets were actually real. When I went back to my Hint 6, it was like someone threw blankets over the speakers. And the Hint 6 is no slouch. As for the Freya +, we only tried it in tube mode with the stock tubes.. It had a pleasant tonality but was plainly outclassed by the rest of the system. It simply cost too much resolution compared to running the pre-outs on the R27-HE. Using the Hint 6 only for its line stage seemed to net a decent compromise between the two signatures, but R27 was still king.
@@MojoMagic977 Massive? Not sure. I regret that we didn't get around to comparing dual Vidars.. I think it will depend on the power requirements of your speakers and your own definition of massive.
