CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Schindler (Liam Neeson) makes his presence, and stature, known at a nightclub while introducing himself to various S.S. members.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler, a German businessman in Poland who sees an opportunity to make money from the Nazis' rise to power. He starts a company to make cookware and utensils, using flattery and bribes to win military contracts, and brings in accountant and financier Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) to help run the factory. By staffing his plant with Jews who've been herded into Krakow's ghetto by Nazi troops, Schindler has a dependable unpaid labor force. For Stern, a job in a war-related plant could mean survival for himself and the other Jews working for Schindler. However, in 1942, all of Krakow's Jews are assigned to the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, overseen by Commandant Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes), an embittered alcoholic who occasionally shoots prisoners from his balcony. Schindler arranges to continue using Polish Jews in his plant, but, as he sees what is happening to his employees, he begins to develop a conscience. He realizes that his factory (now refitted to manufacture ammunition) is the only thing preventing his staff from being shipped to the death camps. Soon Schindler demands more workers and starts bribing Nazi leaders to keep Jews on his employee lists and out of the camps. By the time Germany falls to the allies, Schindler has lost his entire fortune -- and saved 1,100 people from likely death. Schindler's List was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won seven, including Best Picture and a long-coveted Best Director for Spielberg, and it quickly gained praise as one of the finest American movies about the Holocaust.

Best introduction to a main character that I've seen. I wish more films can do this. When you introduce a character, you should set them up as someone you're interested with. You have to convince the audience to follow these people. This film manages to get tell you who this person is and how he thinks. It show's you his goals and what he's after in only a few shots.
@athenapictures
@athenapictures 8 лет назад
looking back on it, this reminds me so much of Cary Grant's introduction in Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious". It just runs a touch smoother, though. Still, it's interesting to see Spielberg's influences still make their way into all of his films.

Such an intelligent line when he says "You tell them they are from me" and sums up perfectly how well Oscar plays the game, if he had told the waiter to tell the officers that there were sent by Oscar Schindler they wouldnt have known who he was and so possibly declined the offer. But by withholding his name Oscar creates an air of mystery and thus drawing his target closer to him, all confirmed when the one officer tells the other to "find out who he is" and thus the trap is sprung.

The way Spielberg shoots this scene is masterful. Look in particular at the shot from 0:57-1:40 and how your attention is drawn through all parts of the frame in sequence. The camera essentially only rotates 90 degrees throughout the whole shot and I counted eight different focal points, or "shots" within that one shot. Hardly any mainstream director shoots like this anymore, with that kind of attention to detail and drama by changing the composition of the frame.

This is one of my favorite scenes ever…on business. _This_ is how you do business. You strategize. Find your prospects. Spend some money. Make them the center of your attention. You earn their trust and their affection. And then contracts flow to you. In business, relationship is more important than nearly anything else. People today forget that.

Liam Neeson should have won an Oscar for his performance in this movie, that year. I mean, Tom Hanks in Philadelphia deserved it, there's no doubt about it, but Liam did such a great job as well... they should have been tied, and shared the Oscar that year. Just saying.

Excellent use of lighting throughout this film. Very much in the noir style, throwing a beam of light onto someone's eyes (or, in one instance later in the film, deliberately casting a minor character's eyes in shadow). I wonder if they gave Neeson some kind of prosthetic for his mouth to help his accent. Whatever the case, he was able to transform his whole appearance in this role, looking almost like Bela Lugosi in Dracula in this scene.
