So sad, thinking that this is how my mother felt with Alzheimers. Constantly corrected, not understood, felt to be a problem, when she totally lived to be anything but a problem. Finally as time progressed, I realized that whatever she said, I could just say “gosh, I KNOW, it IS like that,” as if in the old days talking in the kitchen with her friends. But we had no training to do this initially. Now I see that the people with some form of schizophrenia (I used to answer the hotline and do intakes at a shelter, so I met many) really could use an affirming “oh i can really relate to that,” when possible, rather than a stare of incomprehension, because they have enough loneliness and exile already. We should all be trained from primary school on, that people can be very sincere in their perceptions that differ from our own, and forgetting the self, not taking things personally (as far as possible) and receiving others magnanimously and humbly with love is a great human calling-not debate-team-like efforts at clearing up their mistaken notions. (Unless they are elected officials intentionally pouring forth gushers of disinformation from foreign entities or vested interests, deliberately trying to bring down one’s nation or grift off the public sector…and such persons it appears aren’t interested in counter arguments anyhow.) Thanks for another humane and wise teaching!
It's not uncommon for people from occult and esoteric spiritual communities to get misdiagnosed with delusional and/or hallucinatory disorders (usually by clinicians without sufficient cultural understanding to make those judgments about their patients). So, thank you for reiterating the importance of a patient's cultural/religious worldview, whenever we're attempting to distinguish between a normative experience (for them) -- V.S. a clinically significant pathology. >----> ----> ----> ----> ----> ---->
I was hoping whether more videos could be created on how family members can support a loved one with mental ill health. There appears to be a lack of resources for family members.
The more comfortable I try to get the more uncomfortable I become. The more I try to get motivated the more tired I get. The more 'answers my brain finds it gets even more confused. Non stop. Hell - nothing more. Life will always be worth it but this diagnosis is incredibly disabling. The health workers around my area fail at explaining it as well
I can provide insight as a trans woman with schizophrenia. Before I transitioned a few years ago, i was having really bad symptoms of hallucinations and my sleep was maybe 45 minutes a night. I tried many antipsychotics and nothing helped. When i started HRT, most of my major hallucinations disappeared for a while and i gained quite a bit more control over symptoms. I can see I'm slipping back into an episode lately, so there is a limit. I started at 3mg estrogen with 100mg of progesterone and went to 6mg of estrogen and 200mg progesterone and i definitely feel better at the higher dosage compared to the lower.
I just really want to thank you for the language you used here as a nonbinary afab person on this spectrum. While I am not in a place where I can transition, I do hope I am some day and while this information about estrogen does worry me, I think I will still pursue hormone therapy and top surgery. If that ever happens I'll try and remember to come back here and tell you how I feel. There is a whole lot more I wanna write here, ironically I am finding it hard to find the words. But I really wanted to mostly thank you for being considerate about what words you use. It's just really nice to know someone cares is all I guess.
well, i'm a professional as well so that makes me have grandiose idea of myself then you have grandiouse ideas of yourself as well and as a librarian said to me, we are all schizo listen to those librarians they have a wealth of knowledge
The most awesome thing is I'd an OCD diagnosis for longer than 1 1/2 years and then suddenly got a Schizophrenia diagnosis added to it on the 3rd day I met another psychiatrist after the previous one. (1 1/2 month period of time) The thing that (dis)pleases me the most is local psychiatrists avoid asking question in the best way they can. I'm not sure whether I continuously met wrong psychiatrists or whether it's the standard of psychology in our country.
I've been curious about schizophrenia my whole life because my dad is diagnosed and my sister is diagnosed schizo affective as well as other family members. Recently I had my own manic delusion it only lasted a couple of hours then I went to bed and when I woke up realized I was being delusional. I feel pretty down about the experience and hope there's not more incidents to follow. It did occur the third week of my cycle when like you said estrogen drops
My cousin had this Schizophrenia for years,he went to different hospital but no hope. Later a family friend recommended her to Herbal Doctor and a spiritualist who gave her some Herbs to drink and birth and also Oil to applied on her body after bathing for cleansing for 21days. As am talking to you now,my cousin is free from Schizophrenia. She's working with world Health Organization. Most doctor always discouraged people for using herbs but I want to tell you guys today that every illness is not medical. There are some that are spiritual that needs cleansing with the use of Herbs and other natural supplements
@@stevebutler812 found out recently I have thyroid issues and low b12 thyroid issues on both side of my family! Mine is probably hashimotos and remissed two weeks after my first blood test.
Thankyou for a very informative and structured video. I will recomend this to other medical students. Also you have made me make a final decision to specialise in psychiatry. Which I have thought about for a long time.
I have loose associations but I don't have schizophrenia rather social pragmatic communication disorder with intellectual disability moderate. I find people with schizophrenia are the only ones who will talk to me. I like people with schizophrenia if they are sweet.
Nice information but more detail on pschyzoaffecrive. - Bipolar type and differences between pschizophrenia and lengtn of Pschizophrenia is about 6 months. Pchizoaffective is 2 weeks to how long? Hello Dr Snipes, I am new to your channel and appreciate all of your knowledge, I have currently been diving into a lot of research due to my sons recent diagnosis of schizophrenia, (which I feel due to the circumstances), has been misdiagnosed…in speaking with certain psychologists along with my own research, this diagnosis can Easley be misdiagnosed…I do have alot of questions, but one I’d like to ask is, have you heard of the “Voice Hearer Network”,? This is more familiar and talked about in the UK, and slowly coming to the USA (which has to do with a lot of things, stereotypical reliant of diagnoses), some of the “Voice Hearers”, and some have videos on TED Talk, talk about dealing with their childhood traumas, through psychology and other tools that they mention, have actually helped in reducing if not healed their psychoses, and of course with other therapies along their journey of healing. They also mention that in different cultures these symptoms are valued very differently and treat them very highly in their communities, which is the complete opposite in the USA…The “Voice Hearer’s Network”, can be a very good tool if not more encouraging information and knowledge for anyone who is curious and looking for more tools and to answer any other questions they have…Btw, daily meditation has been a huge tool for my son along with other tools that we’ve been using daily. Can you suggest any cognitive, neurological tests that can be done on a regular basis that can measure the brains alongside certain therapies? Hopefully that was clear, lol I’m always looking for additional ways to go deeper into the rooted problems, Thank you for your videos!!🌺🙏🏽

Thank you for uploading this presentation, it was very informative! I'm trying to learn more about schizophrenia due to a loved one. Do you know of anyone online that would be able to answer some questions about it?
to everyone diagnosed with schizo whatever, ask this question, "what do i need to change from to change into and how and what do i need to do with a steps of rountice that is pleasing to you if you say you people accept me for me and say you are trying to help?"
@@lillyfly quite the narcissistic reply hone but, seriously this is a question and narcissistic personality types have the known habit of avoiding answering the question. now, if you are afraid of the answer then, perhaps you know what they wanted from me in the first place which is quid pro quo which is tit for tat, or sexual harassemnt and discrimination but, again, what am I saying, err asking is I'm calling them out for my whole life and now you question me and my pure motive? but, lets' not have a flame war here as we shall save that for the court room,. haha! to the crime of innocence, how do you plead? your honor to the crime of innocence I pleade guilty but, your' honor what is my punishment for this offense?
I have two friends who both suffer from levels of schizophrenia. Both of them smoke or ingest cannabis on a regular basis. I have urged them to stop as they both exhibit delusional behavior at times. I had another friend who developed severe schizophrenia after ingesting cannabis only one time, he was in his early 20's. I used to think cannabis was benign in this regard, but now it seems I was wrong.
for me it was chronic usage since i was like thirteen. now i'm twenty with severe antisocial symptoms and like. bad thoughts lol. can't drive, couldn't hold a job for a long time. still don't have one feeling capable now though after moving out of this recent dissociative episode
I developed bipolar disorder after eating edibles in my early 20s. I wish I had known about the risks for some people. I would have never touched the stuff if I'd known my life would become like this.
I used icd so version 11 should be out soon. The dsm has a checklist. I find once you have a diagnosis if your not real confortable read a chapter from millon kernberg ect. You'll have a much better grasp on what your dealing with or what you should rule out. Also because insurance companies often won't pay for certain dx's in the 90s. Bpd and simliar disorders were billed as schizoaffective. So if you see that dx on the chart or computer you better look further. If the bugs crawling on the skin yes substance abuse should be ruled out especially w withdrawal. Nice way to talk about the mental status exam. Neologisms will occur ( made up words). Catatonia is now viewed as a neurological disorder to be treated w benzodiazepines not antipsychotics. So this running man may have had akathesia. Many still use Bluelers 4 a's. And elaborate from there. To much dopamine in the parkinsons patients results in pschosis. So much easier when they had the axis's. 3 was medical. So as she said organic things should be ruled out. Deleriums also they will remitt in about 2 weeks or less due to the substance being unavailable or infection treated. Dementias will not remit. Very informing refresher ; thank you for your detailed evaluation of these diagnoses. Brief psychotic disorder was #1 dx at the state hospital where i worked in the mid 80s. Its useful to remember that in psychotic disorders like schizophrenia internal introjects are viewed as external to the person so the hallucinations are from that. I believe your lectures would be useful for nurses as the sleep disorders and reduction of processing speed wasn't always realized by non clinical people who just saw their job as handing out drugs. They often got frustrated by the patients slower processing speed and were not nice to the patient. I often saw this and asked the patient to come with me and sit in my office. Sometimes if so severely disturbed we just sat there w few words but if not to disturbed. I might say that's not nice when people yell at you and they would talk about it. It instilled a level of trust in some patients. Antipsychotics reek havoc on many bodily systems. So i don't recommend them for depressed people who need more than the antidepressant other drugs can be used. Don't push antipsychotics on people who aren't psychotic. Medabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypercholesteremia ect. Sorry i wrote so much ,just felt some one may benefit.
Thank you for sharing such a painful and deeply personal experience. I’m so sorry to hear about the trauma you’ve endured-it’s unimaginable, and no one should ever have to go through something like that, especially at such a young age. Trauma, particularly abuse from someone who is supposed to provide care and safety, can have a profound impact on both mental health and the development of conditions like schizophrenia. Your experience highlights how trauma and stress can exacerbate or even contribute to mental health challenges. I hope you have found or are able to find support-whether through therapy, trusted individuals, or communities-who can help you process what you’ve been through and begin healing. You are incredibly brave for sharing your story, and I want to remind you that your pain and experiences are valid, and you deserve support on your healing journey. Please continue to seek the help and care you need. Thank you for your courage in speaking out-it’s incredibly important, and you are not alone.
I've had better luck with street drugs than I have psychoactive drugs. There are at least a dozen psychotropic drugs which had terrible side effects and reactions to them
Urban Environment....generally correlates to fewer outdoor activities = low vitamin D. Near constant background noise. Theyre probably empathic and so many energies could be irritating. Reduced exercise. Easy access to low quality food
The same difference between 'anorexia' and 'anorexic'. Perhaps you're thinking of the difference between psychopathy and psychosis? Psychopathy is generally antisocial and or narcissistic behavior/ego, whereas psychosis is delusional/hallucinatory beliefs/experiences.
There was a girl in school that thought I liked her because I was looking at her. The reason I was looking at her was because she sat in front of me. I did not tell her that she was delusional....😁😁😁
Schizophrenia is no longer considered a single disorder but rather a spectrum of related disorders. This shift in understanding reflects the complexity and variability of symptoms and experiences among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Key Points: * Schizophrenia Spectrum: The term "schizophrenia spectrum" is now used to describe a range of disorders that share similar features, such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and impaired functioning. This spectrum includes conditions like schizoaffective disorder and schizotypal personality disorder. * Subtypes: Historically, schizophrenia was categorized into subtypes such as paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. However, these subtypes have been removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), as they were found to be unreliable and not particularly useful for treatment planning. * Individualized Approach: The current approach emphasizes the importance of individualized assessment and treatment, recognizing that each person with schizophrenia may have a unique combination of symptoms and needs. Conclusion Schizophrenia is now understood as a spectrum of disorders rather than a single, uniform condition. This perspective allows for more personalized and effective treatment strategies. i have schizoaffective disorder or sza and am mtf transitioning transgender. i will confirm when off my hrt i am 100% more prone to halluciinations and catatonia
okay this is why we write i mean do i have to pause this hour long video to look up each of these words in your powerpoint. oh as harper lee wrote in her letter when they banned her books, its illiteracy not marxism. so i guess we need to teach people to read and ask questions but i guess you people don't like questions but to dictate words
yeah, i guess you are saying that everyone that prays are schizo because you might be saying you don't believe in god. I have someone that is schizo and they pray and their family says they are crazy because they pray to god
labels that now you have to prove this in a court of law to explain this. btw, you might want to write as your speech is very contradictory its very hard and difficult to follow without rewinding to figure out what you are try ing to say. perhaps you're delusional yourself not being accountable for how ou became a doctor???
hallucinatios from ptsd is real but yeah i follow you but there's are lots of questions just stemming in my logical brain that can loop your reasonings into a frenzy and you will place me in a psychiatric facility which will be illegal because i just question your think and your authority because you will discriminate me for my autsim disability that i have denied my whole life. but i already volunteer and sdi my time with plenty of mental health therapists that i can write my thesis now from te expericince and education from socalled doctors and nurses that listen to narcisstics cults that discrimintate who i am as a person. i wnder what and how these cults want me to do. yet to be told to be a man for 42 years and to be on dozens of drugs from doctors i could write up a thesis to place you all back in college to relearn what you discrimniate. but, its my pleasure to volunteer my services as a doctroatein computer logic that manifests into social engineering. oh, the training i hdad as a jehovahs' witness is helpful for this autistic adult godly boy praying to jesus and the angels and being condemned for praying out loud by jehovahs witnesses. let alone what they are being on trial for pedofile actions.
so telecare is right for if a man wants to marry another man to have a threesome with their son? okay somehow I can be empahtic to that one. or if a man says to a women that I love you so much that how dow yo say I sexually assaulted you when he just loves her sexually so much? oh that last question was to incite anger in women.
Really hate to rob people of their label, but schizophrenia is a cover word for those who had un helpful early life, sometimes extending into adulthood. The psychologists tell the truth. It is all due to unhelpful events
Schizophrenia can be triggered by early life stresses, but there is a genetic component and significant alterations in brain structure and connectivity in those with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
oh and if you think my comments are negotiating with your ways of reasons that's because my brain follows a logical format to all manipulating reasonings. you can follow logic when you try to reason that's correct, you can say that again. try seeing a computer program and then look at artificial intelligence, that one makes me giggle just thinking of that one. but i could learn from an artificial intelligent being, can you?
